Her trench was on the longer side without being floor-sweeping and fell to her shins. It was single-breasted and had a neat collar and long sleeves which she ruched up to elbow-length.

The best trench coats around tend to be either black or a sandy tone and Clodagh’s was no exception. It was a warm tan tone that complements pretty much any other colours, meaning she can get plenty of wear out of this coat with a lot of different pieces.

This is why I would always go for a neutral shade when I’m shopping for trenches, as they don’t require careful consideration of what to wear them with to avoid colour clashes. The ITV star wore her coat unbuttoned for a less formal feel and this worked well with her outfit underneath.

In a video where she was discussing her upcoming appearance at the Cork on a Fork Festival, Clodagh gave us a glimpse of the rest of her look. It consisted of a blue and white striped shirt left untucked over a pair of straight leg jeans.

Denim trends come and go, but straight leg jeans have never really gone out of fashion and they’re a nice mid-point between comfy wide-leg styles and streamlined ones. A mid-blue wash like hers can also be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, as they’re not as formal as indigo jeans or as casual as light blue to start off with.

The smartness of the chef’s trench elevated her jeans into more of a smart-casual outfit and her footwear of choice helped with this too. Whilst I’m a big fan of the Birkenstock Arizonas for the summer months, they’re admittedly not the most elegant of shoes and simple slip-on flat sandals are a great alternative.

Clodagh McKenna’s sandals were a warm tan tone with a layered strap running across the top of her feet. Other than that, they were entirely plain - another clever move when you want to slip on your shoes in a rush and be confident they’ll always go with your outfit.

They didn’t exactly match her trench coat, but because they’re a similar colour palette the sandals went well with it. Had she needed a bag for this video, I would’ve expected her to have gone for a tan crossbody for practicality.

With her golden blonde hair swept back into a relaxed updo, Clodagh looked comfortable and put-together. This is an outfit that's easy to pass over in favour of bright colours and fun prints for summer, though it’s far more wearable day-to-day.

I'm always looking for affordable spring/summer staples that give a designer look for a budget price - and these River Island sandals remind me so much of Louis Vuitton's iconic monogrammed style.

While indulging in a timeless designer handbag can be justified as a treat, splashing out on an entire luxury wardrobe isn't the most purse-friendly of options. So I'm always on the hunt for budget-friendly designer lookalikes - and River Island has gone above and beyond with these chunky monogram dad sandals.

Coming in at a budget-friendly £38, the high street store's shoes encapsulate everything there is to love about Louis Vuitton's Sunset Flat Sandals. They too are made from a canvas textile fabric, with a slight patent sheen coming from the protective coating that means you can simply wipe any spills off with a damp cloth so they don't stain. They also boast two straps that run over the top of the sandal, just like the Louis Vuitton pair, and these, alongside the supportive strap that cups the ankle in place, make sure your foot is secure and kept comfortable all day long.

The soles are where the differences come into play. The designer pair feature a sleek, black sole while the River Island pair have a chunkier platform that gives a more elevated feel with its canvas-coated look. This really emphasises the monogram print of the River Island pair and gives the lookalikes a much more statement feel. While it is different to the luxury style, it's a beautiful and luxe look in its own right.

Helen Skelton nailed transitional dressing as she paired a bold red baseball jacket with a pair of khaki trousers and some strappy sandals - the laid-back look is perfect for sunny autumn days.

The Duchess of Sussex is a huge fan of monochrome outfits and - aside from her beautiful shoes - this look was entirely black and white. The co-ord had the appearance of a flowing maxi dress and was designed by Johanna Ortiz.

Both the strappy top and maxi skirt were crafted from silk and were black with white stripes. Unlike the Breton-style tops that are so popular this time of year, the pattern on Meghan’s co-ord wasn’t uniformly horizontal or vertical. This skirt and top combination was so elegant and also very wearable as the Duchess could easily switch things up and pair each individual item with her other wardrobe favourites.

Whilst the co-ord was undeniably stunning, this outfit was made even more so thanks to Meghan’s sunhat, block heeled sandals and crossbody bag. These accessories wouldn’t look out of place worn with your best wedding guest dresses and yet also worked perfectly for a daytime visit to the Escuela Tambores de Cabildo drumming school in Cartagena.

Anyone who loved Meghan’s bronze shirt and trouser look from Day 1 of her Colombia visit will remember these Aquazzura shoes as she also wore them then. 

The ‘cognac brown’ colour is a wonderful neutral hue that pairs easily with everything and the suede added texture that contrasted with Meghan’s floaty co-ord. The ankle strap helped to keep them secure on her feet and the block heel was a stroke of genius as they tend to be far more comfortable for day-to-day wear then stiletto heels, but a bit smarter than your best white trainers. 

Continuing the stylish yet practical theme, Meghan carried with her a sunhat to protect her from the glare of the Colombian sun. This was a white tone with a black ribbon around the brim and this coordinated brilliantly with her clothing’s colour palette.

She had it with her as they arrived in Cartagena and even just being held it added an extra glamorous edge to her outfit. Meghan also brought a white crossbody bag by Cesta Collective which was a functional choice that allowed her to be hands-free but also looked so pretty.

Her accessories were all very classic and neutral and it’s worth following a similar formula with your own summer accessories if you want to get maximum wear out of them. The Duchess of Sussex swept her hair back into a voluminous high ponytail, which is a great hairstyle to go for in hot weather as it keeps your tresses away from your face and shoulders. 

Meghan’s ponytail finished off her put-together outfit in style and her choice of very timeless, neutral accessories has given us a lot of inspiration as we enjoy the end of summer weather. 

Fearne Cotton’s shimmering yellow dress and leopard print flat sandals are a joyful combination for any late summer holidays.

If there’s one colour that epitomises summer it surely has to be sunshine yellow and whilst not everyone will have a summer capsule wardrobe filled with yellow items, having one or two key pieces in this colour is a joyful idea. Particularly when it comes to any end-of-summer holidays you’ve got coming up, a yellow dress is a striking yet easy styling option. Fearne Cotton is clearly on board with this too as she took to Instagram on 14th August to give fans a glimpse at her gorgeous yellow Georgia Hardinge dress, which is now sadly sold out in all but one size on Free People. Showcasing her signature down-to-earth personality, Fearne confessed in the caption that the pictures had been taken in a car park and joked that she hadn’t realised her dress was “transparent”.

Whilst we do see what she means, the semi-sheer finish of the skirt wasn’t overly revealing when it was draping downwards, as seen in the third snap. However, Fearne’s first two pictures also show how much beautiful movement the pleats give this dress as it swirled around her.

The broadcaster and author opted for a simple cami dress with spaghetti straps and delicate shirring on the bodice that echoed the pleating in the skirt. The fit and flare shape was fabulous and is an especially flattering silhouette to look out for if you want to accentuate your waist. The shape of this piece was very timeless and that’s always a great place to start if you want to wear bolder colours, patterns or both.

Fearne’s dress was a beautiful shade that lay somewhere between a sunshine yellow - which she loves to wear - and a lighter lemon colour. The fabric appeared to have a sheen to it that enhanced the hue even more and gave it a golden glow in the sunlight. The star could easily have leaned into the femininity of this design and accessorised with heels or espadrilles and a matching yellow or neutral clutch bag.

Instead, she added a fun, modern edge to her outfit by continuing to embrace the leopard print trend she's loved for quite some time and choosing a pair of leopard print flat sandals. The combination of yellow and leopard print is so happiness-inducing and Fearne’s shoes appear to have been footbed sandals, making them very supportive and comfy. 

The leopard print toe strap and ankle straps helped to keep her feet secure in them and the pale background tone had enough yellow in it to tie in with her dress. In the autumn you could easily recreate the yellow dress and leopard print look with a pair of animal print ankle boots, or make it more subtle by pairing a yellow outfit with your best white trainers.

Fearne finished off her own summer outfit by adding a canvas bag embroidered with vibrant flowers and wore several bracelets, a golden chain necklace and another with a light green pendant hanging from it. Her blonde hair was left loose and straight around her shoulders and the pictures were taken in front of a palm plant, adding to the holiday feel. This was such a fun and colourful outfit from Fearne and one that we'll definitely be taking inspiration from for our next trip.

If I'm being completely honest, when it comes to footwear, I'm usually a sucker for anything that looks stylish without considering how comfortable the shoes are going to be. As a consequence of denying this harsh reality, my summer sandals year on year leave me with aches and pains, and of course plenty of blisters.

However, turning a new page, I thought it was time to find a pair of summer sandals that tick all the boxes, e.g., comfort and style. And the Hush Puppies Blaire Mule Sandals have done just that, making them a top-rated staple that I would recommend for any summer capsule wardrobe.

I well and truly put these sandals to the test, wearing them over an entire weekend. I even wore them on a 30-minute cycle ride through central London— I know sandals aren't the most conventional footwear to cycle in, and I'm not recommending you do this! However, they survived, and even better than that, they felt great on my feet. Plus, I walked a moderate amount of steps (13,000) the same day around Borough Market and through Bermondsey, and these sandals were brilliant to walk in.

One of the most notable things about these shoes is the slightly cushioned sole, which made me feel as though they were sculpted to my feet. The suede memory foam insole really works, and adds an extra layer of plushness to the design, making them ultra comfortable.

I’m not saying this is a universal thing, but most of my shoes (even my sandals) seem to give me blisters, which means that I often find the transition from autumn/winter shoes to sandals a hard one; however, with these sandals, this transition would be easy. This being partially due to their easy on-off design, making them incredibly convenient to slip into, and there is no harsh back strap that can cause unnecessary discomfort.

Of course, comfort isn't the only deciding factor in choosing footwear, and what they look like very much matters. These sandals look effortlessly cool, and they echo the well-loved and trending Birkenstock style that seems to be everywhere. And if you're looking to create summer outfits for work, then these are a fabulous choice too.

If you're wondering how to style them, then this classic design pairs well with almost anything, making them a versatile summer shoe. Over the weekend I wore mine with a stripy summer dress and biker shorts and finished the look off with my trusty slouchy red tote bag. But I have countless staples that will work with these shoes, including my ecru denim dungarees from TOAST, one of the best British clothing brands. They would also pair beautifully with utility-styled outfits like denim workwear trousers and a crisp white t-shirt, or more feminine ensembles like white summer sundresses or long skirts, or to finish off your white jeans outfits.

Plus these are perfect for holidays. If I had owned these during my recent trip to Greece, they would have been my go-to choice. I always walk a lot more than I intend to on holiday, and these shoes would be perfect for those meandering days. I can imagine them being durable for walking the cobbled city streets of Europe, for beach days out, or for evening strolls along a pier.

Their easy on-and-off design, cushioned sole, affordable price point, and sophisticated design, make them a summer must-have in my eyes.

Queen Letizia’s flat sandals delivered practicality and style at a special dinner and her flowing midi dress and gold hoops upped the glamour even more.

The Queen of Spain is fast becoming the queen of comfy yet stylish shoes as this summer we’ve seen her bring out some of the most beautiful flat shoes and sandals. Whilst many royals like the Princess of Wales love nothing more than a slingback or an espadrille wedge this time of year, Queen Letizia has been reaching for her best white trainers and barely-there sandals. Her latest shoes of choice were a pair of £160 Sézane Adeline sandals in the smooth braided gold colourway. These sandals are so timeless and come in several other colours, though it seems like metallic shades are having a moment with Her Majesty right now.

A day after Queen Letizia’s metallic slip dress outfit dazzled, she wore her sandals with a flowing midi dress as she, King Felipe and his mother-in-law Queen Sofia hosted a dinner for authorities at the Marivent Palace.

The sandals were a great choice as the flat design meant they were comfortable to last a whole evening in, but the gold colour and twisted straps elevated them. Crafted from leather they secure around the ankle with a buckled strap, whilst the braided straps crossover the foot in such a chic way that immediately draws the eye. Queen Letizia’s flat sandals worked perfectly with her orange patterned Maksu short sleeved midi dress. Sadly this particular design has sold out and we’re not surprised given its sunset colours and fun print.

It had a v-neckline, short sleeves and a self-tie belt that accentuated the waist, though the dress itself wasn’t overly fitted. This more relaxed silhouette is a lovely option to have in your summer capsule wardrobe for hotter days and the skirt had a gorgeous drape to it. All over Queen Letizia’s dress was an abstract pattern of vivid orange and deeper burnt orange, with splashes of ecru and gold to add brightness and contrast to the design.

The gold details coordinated with Her Majesty’s sandals and matching your accessories to at least one of the colours featured in your outfit is a brilliant tip if you want your look to be polished, with a sense of cohesion. Queen Letizia went one step further on this occasion and also matched her earrings to her shoes and dress.

Although she has some spectacular royal jewellery pieces in her collection Queen Letizia went for a simple pair of plain gold hoops for the dinner at the Marivent Palace. They were relatively chunky, which made them more of a statement pair, and they are something that works effortlessly for every occasion, whether more formal like this or for a casual day-to-day outing.

This outfit showcased versatile staples like the sandals and earrings and Queen Letizia continued the relaxed smart-casual feel by keeping her glossy brunette hair loose and straight in a side-parting. She looked sensational for this special dinner in Mallorca and it’s here on the Balearic island that the Spanish Royal Family enjoy their annual summer break.

Every year they head there in late July and enjoy time in Mallorca in August as a family - similar to how the British royals travel up to Balmoral in Scotland. Queen Letizia’s latest look was a fabulously summery outfit that would also make a stunning holiday look once her and King Felipe's break begins next month.

It's been a while since gladiator sandals were in fashion, but look around, well, anywhere right now, and the strappy summer shoe is hard to miss.  

Gladiator sandals are having a(nother) moment, no doubt freshly inspired by the resurgence in the boho aesthetic everyone is loving this summer. And while we don't see them overtaking the best white trainers anytime soon, the once 'dated' sandal trend is very much back in fashion. 

Once celeb well aware of the chic style the gladiator sandal could create was Pippa Middleton, who, back in the 2010s, was often seen sporting a pair. And we're hooked on her style for its simplicity and comfort. 

Our favourite of her summer footwear in this style has got to be the Glastonbury Gladiator sandal by Jane Winkworth at French Sole. Pippa was seen wearing the intricate studded shoes on a number of occasions back in the summer of 2013 – pairing them with mostly dresses for daytime trips, including one in London (pictured below).

While gladiator sandals look amazing, they're renowned for not being the most comfortable of summer shoe – with many of them featuring multiple straps to first try and work your feet into, and then metres of it to wind around your ankle and / or leg. It looks great - but comfort wise, particularly when you've been wearing them in the heat all day and your feet and legs swell, they can cause a lot of discomfort.

But Pippa's style removes that worry, the simple design leaving toes, legs and ankles free, and the studded design giving that chic, elevated feel without straps restricting her every movement. Pippa has also been seen wearing Sam Edelman's Gigi Signet sandals, which are, again, a beautifully simplified version of the gladiator style that we would happily wear every day.

Pippa's exact pair are sadly no longer available, but the resurgence in the shoe trend means there are plenty of similar designs to choose from. We'll definitely be investing in a more pared back design for summer – the super stylish shoe immediately makes you look and feel great, but, much like Pippa, we're all about the comfort too.

So far I've already bought several pairs that are my non-negotiables when deciding what to pack in hand luggage. From the black crochet sandals that everyone's been asking me about to some tan buckled flats that I didn't take off during my last holiday. But this designer lookalike style is next on my shopping list!

I'm a keen hiker in the Pennine and Peak District in England. I'm no stranger to the great outdoors year-round, but I love climbing the hills with my walking poles come summer. The best hiking sandals overall

The Terra Fi 5 Universal is one of Teva’s bestselling hiking sandals, so it would seem imprudent not to consider them when thinking about what to wear hiking. And having tested them, these hiking sandals do live up to the hype.

The first thing that struck me is that the Terra Fi 5 is a good-looking sandal, successfully combining practicality and style, which is hard to come by across the wider range of hiking sandals. Plenty of sizing options exist and four colourways, including neutral, blue, red and black. In the sea of pink and purple-tinted women's hiking sandals, these are a welcome addition.

Two adjustable straps, one on a slant just below the toes and the other over the front of the ankle, provide support, while the midsole arch makes for super comfortable striding even over rockier terrains with plenty of traction provided by the outer sole. Although your toes are exposed, the front of the sandal does lift a little, which helps to protect them. They are a natural fit for smoother paths and walkways.

These sandals are more expensive than some others on the list at £90, but as you would hope, these are durable and feel like they are made to last. And unlike some hiking sandals, these can comfortably be worn sightseeing and in social situations, not just out on the trail, so you do get your money's worth.

The best cushioned hiking sandal

The Hoka Infini Hike TC is the brand's first true open-toe sandal, and it's built for hikers who love the brand's trademark chunky sole (as you'll find in the walking and running shoes) but want a little more freedom and versatility, says fellow hiker Julia Clarke.

The brand dipped its toe into the sandal world with the Hopara 2 (our top pick from Hoka in this list), but this one goes all in on a breezy summer feel with quick-drying straps that fasten over your toes, the top of your foot, and behind your heel with hook-and-loop closures for easy on and off, just like any sandal - but with extra support for on- and off-trail walking.

That being said, the highlight of these hiking sandals is certainly the cushioning. There's 30.2mm in the heel and 23.3 in the forefoot, with a deep heel cup that cradles your foot so it doesn't slide around when you hit bumpy ground. On the underfoot, there's a Vibram outsole with 3.5mm lugs, putting it in line with most trail running shoes.

The best sandals for long hikes

If your hike involves long walks or particularly rocky terrains, a closed-toe, supportive sandal like the Keen Hyperport H2 is the best option to avoid lacking ankle support when you need it most - one of the biggest hiking mistakes you can make, in my opinion. It combines the protective elements of a hiking shoe with the open, airy elements of a sandal. I'm a big fan and it rivals the Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal for the top spot.

On first glance, you might think these sandals are "a bit much" since the style and colour options - which include pink, yellow, and tangerine - are eye-catching. However, if you're anything like me, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how much you like the look of them when they're on.

Based on Keen’s Newport sandal, the Hyperport H2 includes additional features that have made this a premium, must-have sandal for those who enjoy hiking longer distances in warmer weather. There is air-injected foam midsole, which I found added comfort to the overall shoe and additional support underfoot on rockier terrains - but are more lightweight than their predecessor. Do not be deterred by the fact they don't have straps either - the mesh upper and mesh heel pull loop means there's plenty of stretch when you put them on, and the one pull bungee races mean you can adjust them for the right fit. Overall, I found them to be incredibly supportive around the midfoot and upper, more so than some other hiking sandals I've tried with velcro and the design looks more seamless and mature thanks to these fixings.

The best hiking sandals on a budget

Decathlon is one of my go-to stores for active and outdoor clothing and equipment - they sell everything from the best sports bras to fitness trackers - so it's rare I don’t emerge from the store clasping a new addition for my hiking or camping stash. I rate this brand so highly because of the quality you can expect at an affordable price point - and the Quechua NH500 sandals are a case in point.

Even at full price, the hiking sandals are under £30. For that, you get cushioning through double EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) soles, a non-slip grip and two adjustable rip tabs, beneath the toes and across the front of the ankle.

As Decathlon suggests, these hiking sandals are not designed for mountain trails and elevation gains, but they are ideal for days out, sightseeing and weekend walks. As the weather warmed up over the last few weeks, I was grateful to have them on my feet as the two singular straps ensure the sandals are breathable and they don't chafe as you walk. They aren't going to win awards for support or appearance - though they do look similar to some fashionable Teva sandals I've worn - but that's not what they are for.

They also don't look out of place running errands. While I personally prefer wider straps as they feel more secure, they did not rub or slip on a walk through uneven woodland, so I reckon they could fair well on shorter hikes and through woodland or woody park terrains. In short, these make a great everyday option if you're on a budget.

The best hiking sandal for the beach

These sandals - or shandals to give them their correct title as they are a sandal/shoe hybrid - looked a little out of place when I tried them out on my walks in Greater Manchester. As the name suggests, the Seaside Drainage Shandals in their bright teal colour are made with beach holidays, coastal paths and shoreline strolls in mind.

I might not live near the seaside, but I did wear them to cross a stream during one of my walks and living in the North of England, I'm used to wet weather. They did indeed allow the water to pass through the drainage holes and remained comfortable to wear even when damp. My feet also dried quickly thanks to the synthetic neoprene lining and lightweight outer materials. If I had any niggles about these shandals, it would my middle toe on both sides seemed to be trying to escape through one of the gaps - but it was not uncomfortable and this comes down to more personal fit than anything else.

I personally love the pop of colour. While it is bold, I'm so used to seeing tonal colours and pops of pink and purple that a bright teal is a welcome sight. Many of the best swimwear brands for 2024 have also included the tone in their palette, so you may find a matching swimsuit too. If tonal is more your style though, the Regatta Haris sandals come exclusively in muted shades, as do the Teva sandals.

The best Merrell hiking sandal

As you would expect from a trusted brand such as Merrell, the Kahuna III hiking sandals do not disappoint. At woman&home, we're big fans of the brand - with the Merrell Moab Speed 2 and other hiking shoes frequently making the top of our best-of lists.

I would describe the Kahuna III as grown-up sandals for serious walking, which means they are functional - if not the most decorative - sandals. Despite their bulky appearance, they feel lightweight and agile on foot, even over rockier terrains.

Available in three tones, there are two adjustable hooks, loop straps, and clasps across the toes and over the front of the foot, so I felt very secure during my walks. Although they provide minimal toe protection, there is plenty of grip on the inner sole and traction grip on the outer sole. They have also been made with waterside activities in mind, which I found incredibly useful when walking on changeable terrain.

I felt I could walk and walk in these sandals, so they are a great choice for longer hikes or lengthy city walks. On one of my trips, I was out for three hours, which included a pretty steep, hilly incline (and descent), but there was no sign of rubbing. At £100, these are one of the more expensive hiking sandal options, but loyal customers will rave about how durable they are, how long they last, and ultimately how wonderfully comfortable they are, so you can think of them as investment footwear.

The best hiking sandal for city walks

If you are looking for versatile hiking sandals that can provide support on an everyday basis, then the Regatta Haris Lightweight Sandal ticks a lot of boxes in my book. These hiking sandals are not as cumbersome as some hiking sandals that I've tried, and the three Velcro straps (behind the ankle, across the toes and the widest width of the foot) make it easy to slip on and adjust the shoe as needed.

True to size, they fit like a dream thanks to the cushioning and shock-absorbing layer under foot, and that remains my experience from wandering in the local park and supermarket to doing a 90-minute walk around a reservoir. The top of the sandal is raised a little, which provides more protection and means you are less likely to stub your toes - much like the Teva sandals, our top pick. There is also plenty of grip on the sole, so you feel secure on the move.

Functionality should always trump fashion where hiking sandals are concerned - especially as you can pair them with a pair of the best running shorts or workout leggings to complete the look - but the tonal hues and floral design mean these sandals will comfortably take you from a day of walking to a terrace bar for summer drinks, and they won’t look out of place. Although they great all-rounders, I personally think these are more suitable for weekend walks and sightseeing than long hikes.

The best Hoka hiking sandal

Another shandal to add to the mix is Hoka’s super stylish Hopara - a closed toe option that provides the protection of a shoe with the breathability of a sandal. It should be noted, these are the most expensive option in this round-up at £105, but as you would hope at that price, you can expect to wear and wear this footwear and feel assured doing so.

Sold as a ‘true outdoor explorer,’ these have been created for tackling all terrains and to provide comfort whatever the weather throws at you - thankfully, as I got caught in the rain several times while testing these out. They felt snug around the heel and midfoot when I was walking, offering great support but not feeling too tight. The material also provides flexibility for your foot so you can move with even the most unstable terrain, without losing confidence in your ankles. I've tested many hiking boots and shoes over the last few years and even the most highly-rated of these sometimes fail to deliver on this, so I was very impressed.

Instead of adjustable straps, there is a quick lace system, which you pull to adjust and can then niftily tuck the lace away. Much like the Keen hiking sandals, this makes the design look much more streamlined and mature than some of the other sandals out there with velcro support. There is also plenty of cushioning due to the rubberised EVA midsole, as well as a substantial toe cap to keep your toes well protected.

Admittedly, these are not the most understated footwear and they might be a little too bulky for some people, but they are available in a range of colours and an impressively inclusive array of sizes. Expect compliments when you are on the move too, as these can prove quite the talking point when you are out and about.

The best sustainable hiking sandals

The Wildsole Mamtor Sandals might be minimalist - but don’t underestimate them. They are multi-functional sandals designed to be worn in all elements and on all terrains. Made in Yorkshire, the owners wanted to create the UK’s first barefoot sandals, rather than ship them in from the States to reduce air missiles and associated emissions. There are now seven unisex models, including the Mamtor, which I tried.

To be honest, it is the first time I have tried barefoot shoes of any kind so I was intrigued to know what they would feel like. So far, after just a couple of walks, I'm impressed. The simple strap sits between your toes (like a flip-flop) and stretches behind your ankle. It can be adjusted if needed. As your toes are not constrained, they can move freely and spread naturally as you walk, which is the benefit of such minimal support.

Though you can technically run and jump in these flexible sandals, it's not something I've tried yet, so can't comment on their durability across more vigorous types of exercise. I have spent an entire day walking in them, however, and it's been something of a revelation. On a summer’s walk, it feels incredible to be barefoot but safe in the knowledge your soles are protected from whatever might be on the ground. And as they are so light, you can easily stow them in your rucksack when heading out on adventures or as an alternative shoe on holiday.

I wouldn't recommend them for any seriously long hikes or walks across any hazardous terrains. As you can probably guess by their appearance, they are better suited to beach and city walks - provided there's little debris on the pavements - and best paired with a pair of black gym leggings, perhaps. For anything more than a walk, I'd suggest an alternative option like the Merrell Kahuna III or the Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal.

The best lightweight hiking sandal

My first takeaway on trying Helly Hanse’s Capilano F2F sandals is just how light they are, given that the straps and sole look and feel comparatively substantial. They are sold as a day hiker, which is how I tested them, and I found they did a superb job.

There are two adjustable straps, one around the front of the ankle, and the other on a slight diagonal beneath the toes, so they are easy to put on. I particularly like the arch and cushioning, which felt plush but incredibly supportive. Combined, it's a design that makes for comfortable walking, especially when you are out for a few hours. My feet did not slip on the inner sole and although my toes were exposed, the sandals provide some toe protection as they lift at the front to help combat stubbing.

They are made from recycled synthetic material and sold as quick drying, which I found true after mistakenly stepping into puddles after a summer shower. I was also impressed that the straps stayed in place and didn't rub my feet when they got wet, which was a huge benefit as this happened earlier in the day. Although support and comfort are always key, I feel points should always be awarded if that can be combined with style - and I think the lighter cactus green shade is a spot-on colourway that's both low-key and unique. Overall, this is a versatile sandal you can wear with confidence.

The best hiking sandal for running

The Aventrail sandal was designed to bridge the gap between existing running sandal designs, which usually take a minimalist approach with thin soles and no support and the modern trend of maximalist trail running shoes, says fellow tester Julia.

"The well-cushioned midsole is closer to what you might expect from a modern trail running shoe like the Hoka Mach range, and comes with a nylon plate to improve responsiveness. The underfoot package is completed with a rubber outsole and tiered traction lugs for extra grip on the trails," she says.

"As a sandal, you automatically experience increased breathability compared to the upper of a running shoe, and the knit fabric used for the straps improves on this further, which is especially appealing for running in warmer climates," she says.

How we tested the best hiking sandals for women

As a keen hiker, an outdoor enthusiast, and a journalist, I combine my personal and professional interests by trialling products and speaking to industry experts for their insights. For this review, I consulted outdoor professionals on what factors to consider when looking for a first-rate pair of hiking sandals.

Then, I wore each pair of hiking sandals for two walks minimum. The first was a shorter distance, sometimes-early-morning walk to get my initial impressions of the hiking sandals, and the second for a minimum of an hour, often longer, across varied terrain, whether woodland, grass, gravel, tarmac and on occasion through water, too.

I reviewed each pair with the expert’s advice in mind including my recommendations:

• Comfort: When you are out walking and hiking, it is essential your feet feel as comfortable as possible. I noted how comfortable they were at all stages, from the initial try-on to how my feet felt at the end of a walk, including breathability, slippage and any rubbing.
• Support: Support is essential when buying hiking sandals, so when reviewing the hiking sandals, I considered the sturdiness of the straps, the inner sole and outer sole, including the type of grip offered, and whether there was arch support, too.
• Materials: Hiking sandals need to be breathable, fast-drying and durable, so I considered the types of fabric (whether synthetic, mesh or leather etc) and how they felt during each walk.
• Versatility: I wore these hiking sandals on various types of terrain, including pavement, grass, hills and moorland, evaluating how they adapted to the setting, whether they were strictly hiking sandals or could be worn every day, and how easy they were to put on and take off.
• RRP: As with any outdoor wear, prices for hiking sandals can vary as much as the styles on offer. I took this into consideration when reviewing the hiking sandals, ensuring a wide range of price points were included.
• Additional details: I have highlighted whether the hiking sandals have any additional details worth noting, for example unique styles and colourways or particularly inclusive sizing.

How to choose the best hiking sandals for you

• Think about the terrain and distance: "Ensure you choose an appropriate sandal. Do you need sandals for simple terrains, like grass and beach hikes or multi-day long-distance hikes? I don’t wear sandals when hiking over more complex terrain like rocky mountains,” says Carla Khouri, a qualified outdoor instructor and community lead at Merrell Hiking Club.
• Consider cushioning: “If you are walking longer distances you may want to consider a more cushioned sole, although these can be a little heavier than a non-cushioned sole,” says Khouri.
• Think about your toes: “If you choose an open-toe sandal, look for a slightly raised area at the front, which will help to protect your toes against rocks and roots. Closed-toed sandals offer more protection and will help prevent small pebbles, twigs, etc, from getting under your foot,” adds Khouri.
• Focus on functionality over fashion: "Look out for practical materials – either fast-drying synthetics or waterproof leather,” says Steve Davies, the purchasing and commercial manager for Trekitt. "If you are likely getting wet (rivers, beaches, rain), look at materials like neoprene. Some fabric straps are lined with neoprene so that your foot is still held in place even when wet," adds Khouri.
• Check the sole for grip: "We always advise looking for sandals with a proper hiking sole. When choosing a pair, easy things to look for are the contouring of the sole and whether it offers any arch support around the midfoot. Also underneath, whether it has plenty of tread to ensure the sandals provide good grip on slippery surfaces," says Davies.
• Socks or no socks: "Wearing socks can reduce the risk of any straps rubbing and causing blisters. They also protect a little more against insects or debris on the path. It might be worth wearing the sandals with socks around the house until you’re confident you’ve broken them in fully,” says Davies. “However, socks limit the breathability of hiking sandals, and if you’re walking near water, they can get wet and dry slowly, which can often cause blisters or rubbing.”

How should hiking sandals fit?

When trying on hiking sandals, the best plan is to have your feet expertly measured. If this is not an option for you or you're looking to buy online, make sure you measure your feet and check these measurements against the size guide given online as sizes and fits vary between brands, says Davies.

"When trying them on, you want the sandals to fit snugly but not with any pressure points or tight areas. Most models will have adjustable straps, so we advise tweaking these to achieve the right fit and then try walking around on a carpeted area to make sure they feel comfortable," he says.

"Make sure your heel isn’t lifting at the back of the sandal and that you have plenty of room for your toes at the front. Your toes shouldn’t be right to the edge of the sandal as this reduces how protected they are," he says.

There also should not be any side-to-side movement of your foot, says Khouri. "Your foot should not slide forward or backward when walking on a slope. Also, look for reviews to find out about a sandal's real-life performance and whether a model is true to size. Also, look at the retailer's return policy so you can replace them if they are not right for you."

Hiking sandals vs hiking boots

"Unlike a standard sandal or flip-flop, a hiking sandal will be optimised to offer excellent underfoot comfort and greater stability, so they are a really good choice if you’re walking off-road. For more technical terrain or routes that take you into the hills and mountains, we would always recommend wearing a walking shoe or hiking boot which provides greater cushioning underfoot and offers increased protection from scree and loose rock,” says Davies.

"If you are carrying a heavy backpack (going rucking, for example, or using a weighted vest for walking), hiking sandals will not be suitable and you should ideally choose a higher cut boot that provides maximum stability and ankle protection. You can always take your hiking sandals with you on overnight treks though, they are great for giving feet a rest from your boots while relaxing at camp."

Running along the sides are subtle stud details that are mirrored on the buckles and these made Helen’s outfit a little more edgy. For a casual daytime outing in warmer weather chunky sandals are brilliant and Helen looked stylish yet relaxed for her time in the great outdoors. This bomber jacket is clearly one of her favourite pieces right now as the presenter recently wore the same one when she visited the Natural History Museum with her sons.

On this occasion Helen kept to her winning outfit combination of a pared-back outfit underneath her jacket and wore a classic white T-shirt, jeans and white trainers. She accessorised with a few pieces of gold jewellery and left her blonde hair loose and bouncy around her shoulders. They have to be comfortable enough that you can walk a long way in them, and soft enough not to rub when your feet get hot. You want them to work with dresses, jumpsuits, jeans, shorts, and whatever the Great British weather might decide to throw at you on any given day. Oh and ideally, you don't want to fork out a fortune for them. Trying to achieve all that is no mean feat (no pun intended!).
