So far, we've seen everything from milky, softly tinted looks to statement designs (like striped nails), and even several exciting new shade launches - OPI's Bubble Bunny and Manucurist's Jelly polishes, to name just a few. There's also been a further focus on nail health and embracing bare talons rather than hopping on every trending colour.

Indeed, it feels as though we're all focusing on what we, as individuals, love, as opposed to solely following the seasonal shifts and the traditional colour palettes that come with them. As Tinu Bello, Senior Mylee Ambassador and A-List Manicurist, puts it: "Personalisation is huge - there’ll be a rise in nails that look couture but still natural. Layered gels, tinted builder bases and sheer washes of colour allow for custom finishes that feel bespoke to the wearer."

As for what's still to come, below we explore the currently popular and the manicures we, and the experts, predict are still to make their mark...

Our 2026 nail essentials

Before we dive into 2026's chic and exciting array of nail trends, we thought we'd first share the nailcare buys we'll be restocking and using throughout the coming months.

1. Barely-there colours

According to celebrity manicurist Julia Diogo, subtle and creamy colours will continue to be in high demand this year. "Milky, sheer manicures aren’t going anywhere. The 'your nails but better look' is becoming a real staple."

We'll see a rise in 'airy, barely-there colours,' the sort that 'quietly enhance' your nails, rather than completely transforming them.

2. Short and soft nail shapes

"Trends seem to be shifting toward shapes that feel more natural, practical and easy to live with," says Diogo, "In my opinion, nothing beats an elegant and low-maintenance short soft square or medium almond nail - they elongate the fingers and have such a chic aesthetic."

A-list manicurist, Tinu Bello, also adds that, "shapes in 2026 are all about soft structure. Short-to-medium lengths are making a strong return, with square-oval ('squoval') and tapered square leading the way. These shapes feel polished but practical, which fits the growing demand for nails that suit everyday life rather than just special occasions."

As for those of you who love almond nails and prefer a bit of length, Bello notes that, "elongated almond remains timeless, but it's becoming slimmer and more sculpted - less dramatic than previous years."

3. Micro nail shapes

Further to the rise in soft nail shapes, we'll also see 'micro' lengths become increasingly popular.

"We're also seeing a rise in 'micro shapes': ultra-short versions of classics like micro almond or micro square," Bello says, adding that this "is part of the broader movement towards understated luxury."

4. Ultra-clean neutrals

According to Bello, 2026 colour trends will be split into two camps: "ultra-clean neutrals and rich, futuristic tones."

As far as the former is concerned, Bello predicts that, "The Creamy off-whites, milky taupes, and sheer latte shades dominate the minimalist side, creating a polished 'quiet luxury' nail. Some of my favourite examples are Mylee Luna, Mylee Exposé, and Mylee Cream On Top."

5. Yellows over cream

From lemon to butter yellow, this sunny colour continues to be in high-demand in 2026 and for good reason. If you opt for a pastel or sheer iteration, a soft yellow offers a similarly clean and chic look to cream, but with an added touch of brightness that feels so apt for the spring/summer months.

6. Tech-inspired colours

"On the other end, bold tech-inspired colours are emerging - deep petrol blues, metallic graphite, neon-tinged reds and synthetic greens," explains Bello.

"These shades feel modern, slightly industrial, and aligned with the rise of techno-fashion and AI-inspired colour stories. DIY with Mylee Silver Screen, Mylee Red Flags, or Mylee Groovy Green."

7. Fruit-inspired brights

Think tomato-red and crushed raspberry; fruit-inspired brights are also set to be popular, especially with summer fast approaching. We're also seeing a rise in tinted and jelly looks that feel reminiscent of last year's sorbet nails.

8. Statement details

"Nail trends for 2026 are moving toward a more refined, architectural aesthetic, driven by a blend of futurism and minimal luxury," comments Bello, "We’re seeing people shift from statement nails to statement details - think precision, clean edges and elevated simplicity."

As for nail art, Bello predicts that refinement will be the overarching theme: "Instead of busy patterns, it’s all about subtle intention: micro-line detailing, minimalist negative space, and ultra-thin chrome accents."

9. Simple designs with personality

As mentioned, this year's trend will carry a theme of personalisation, whilst remaining fairly minimalistic and subtle. Think little meaningful motifs painted onto milky manicures, accents of your favourite statement colour, as well as sheer, buildable colours and customisable tints that allow you to create your own unique and signature shade.

As Bello puts it, "Personalisation is huge - there’ll be a rise in nails that look couture but still natural. Layered gels, tinted builder bases and sheer washes of colour allow for custom finishes that feel bespoke to the wearer.”

Diogo also hopes to see more personality creeping into nail looks this year, as this is something she loved about last year, describing it as creative joy: "I’ve really loved how 2025 has let me move between those soft, understated looks and the bolder, more expressive moments my clients have been leaning into.

"Even the most minimal sets have become a canvas, whether it's adding tiny details like micro-art, subtle gems, or playful patterns like polka dots. I’m hoping that blend of simplicity and personality continues into 2026."

10. Customised tones

As mentioned, bespoke manicures will really have their moment in 2026. We'll see more and more buildable, sheer nail polishes and layered gels taking centre stage, no doubt as a result of last year's milky, jelly and tinted manicures - like rosehip oil nails and rosewater nails. Many nail artists already offer their own custom blends, like celebrity manicurist Harriet Westmorland, for example, whose strawberry and vanilla-y glosses have become so popular that she's actually launched her own line of gel polishes.

11. Whisper-fine ombrés

Following on with a similar theme from custom and sheer blends, we'll also see a rise in 'whisper-fine' ombrés and other ultra-blended techniques.

"Gradient techniques are also resurging, but in a more elegant way," says Bello, "whisper-fine ombrés, tonal diffusions and soft-focus airbrushed looks that feel almost atmospheric."

12. Care first, cosmetics second

As with 2025, the condition of our nails will continue to be a key concern. As Rebecca Crawforth, founder of Navy Professional, notes, "Nail health has become a major focus because people are finally recognising that strong, healthy nails are the foundation of every manicure. As we move into 2026, there’s a real shift toward care first, cosmetics second. Clients are becoming more informed about what they’re putting on their bodies, and they’re prioritising long-term nail integrity over quick fixes or overly aggressive treatments."

So, where do we start? "For me, nail health is all about consistency and simplicity," explains Crawforth, "Healthy nails come from a combination of good daily habits, gentle maintenance, and high-quality tools. Over-filing, harsh removals and neglecting cuticles are still the biggest causes of damage, so education is more important than ever."

13. Apricot oranges & turquoise blue for spring

If you want to get a jumpstart on spring 2026's trending shades, Elly Brackenridge, Assistant Buyer at LookFantastic predicts that "pale orange and turquoise blue" will be in high demand, as opposed to last year's lavender milk looks.

Think milky apricot shades, and aquatic glosses that mimic clear waters, rather than very opaque and chalky pastels.

If you're booked and busy this festive season, yet unable to nab a manicure appointment in time, I've found this at-home gel kit to be a real nail and money saver...

Personally, an at-home gel kit is never going to replace my professional gel appointments, because I love Bio Sculpture nails and the flawless finish my nail tech delivers. But as someone who is fairly disorganised in the appointment department and something of a procrastinator, I do occasionally find myself in need of a fresh manicure yet unable to get a slot at my favourite salon, as they book up quickly. Traditional air-drying polish can work wonders in a pinch, but what about when you need your nails to remain chip-free for multiple days in a row?

This month, I found myself in this very predicament, having left booking my Christmas appointment a tad late. And while I did manage to secure one, it wasn't until the week after our work party. Thus, I had to take matters into my own hands. In case you're in a similar manicure-related bind or seeking the perfect gift for someone who loves to stay on top of seasonal nail trends, here's why an at-home gel kit might be just the ticket...

The at-home gel kit I rely on when I can't get a pro appointment

As a manicure lover myself, I'll confess that my natural nails don't get a lot of airtime. I love a fresh and glossy gel finish, but whenever I'm taking a break between appointments (or can't book one when I need one), I turn to a traditional air-drying polish to tide me over and improve the look of my talons. My one gripe, though, is just how quickly normal nail polishes tend to chip. It could be down to my application, but I'm usually unable to make them last past the day two mark without at least one nail lifting or looking scratched.

Thankfully, though, I've found a great in-between fix that I can achieve very chic-looking results with - even on my first use. An at-home gel kit, specifically Mylee's The Main kit, has saved me on quite a few occasions when I have several plans in a row and want chic nails for all of them.

How I use the Mylee gel kit

It goes without saying that you should familiarise yourself with and follow the instructions that come with the kit, but through my experience, prep is definitely key to longevity.

Be sure to shape your nails and buff their surface beforehand, as this will help the gel base coat to adhere to your nails. The Main Kit does come with a builder gel, but I actually prefer just applying the clear base coat, curing, and then going in with two to three thin layers of my gel colour (as mentioned, I've been loving the shade Diva).

Then comes the top coat, which delivers such an impressive shine, which really helps to elevate the entire manicure. Several colleagues actually assumed I'd just had my nails done professionally when I rocked up to the office Christmas party, such was the glossy shine. Throughout the application, be very careful not to get gel on your skin. I find it's a good idea to have a cotton bud or a clean brush on hand to help remove any excess before curing.

This set also comes with gel remover, but I would also recommend investing in nail clips, as they make the process so much easier.

At this point, we've seen and worn every iteration of a pastel manicure for spring. If, like us, you're feeling a tad uninspired by this season's milky array, Juliette Binoche's black nails might just offer the chic, French flair that's been missing.

After all, there are only so many spring nail colours you can rotate before boredom inevitably sets in, much as we love lavender and milky pink (both of which are 2025 nail trends). We've been on the hunt for a contrasting manicure, and thanks to French actress, Juliette Binoche, it seems glossy black nails are the answer. Timeless and effortlessly chic, there's a reason why black, like red, is a classic nail colour and, contrary to belief, it's very easy to wear - especially paired with stylish, short nails.

So, if you're looking to rebel against the floral and neutral nail designs we're seeing everywhere, here's how to recreate Binoche's chic look, right down to the nail polish brand she wears.

Juliette Binoche says black nails are French-approved for spring

While soapy pinks have been a go-to on the red carpet this season, Binoche opted for the opposite on April 10th, pairing a leather-look skirt and olive blazer with a short and chic black manicure.

The glossy, patent-black hue perfectly complements her sophisticated attire and never fails to deliver a high-fashion, couture feel. More so when the dark colour is paired with a modern squoval or short square nail shape, which Binoche has opted for.

If you're keen to recreate the look, her nail artist Lucy Tucker shared an insight. In an Instagram post, Tucker revealed that the brand Nails.Inc was behind the glossy shade, while products from Byredo were used to hydrate the actor's hands.

Alas, we're unsure of the exact shade, but Nails.Inc do offer both gel-effect and traditional black nail polishes. As for the hand care, Byredo's Gypsy Water Hand Cream gets our vote - with its lightweight, nourishing formula and iconic scent of juniper berries, bergamot and woody notes.

Recreate Juliette Binoche's patent black nails

If you're keen to follow Binoche's stylish lead and swap pastels for a cool and edgy black manicure, we recommend opting for a similar square nail shape and applying two to three coats of polish - to achieve a streak-free finish. If your nails are feeling brittle or textured, using one of the best nail strengtheners as your base coat, pre-polish is also a good option.

Then, for a professional gel-like shine, add a clear top coat over your chosen black polish.

There’s something about a pair of smart, tailored trousers that instantly fills me with confidence and they work for so many smart-casual outfits.

Wide-leg designs are my favourites, but palazzo trousers are emerging as a huge trend for 2025. The Duchess of Sussex is on board with it too and stepped out in New York on 23rd April wearing a Ralph Lauren linen-silk blend suit.

We all know she loves a blazer so it wasn’t a surprise to see her go for one here, but the palazzo trousers were the real statement piece in this ensemble.

Meghan’s exact trousers are an investment and virtually sold out, but there are so many beautiful, neutral palazzo options around right now that we’ll all rather spoilt for choice on how to recreate her New York look.

The Duchess of Sussex was in the Big Apple to attend the 2025 TIME 100 Summit at Lincoln Center and chose to style her chic co-ord with a classic white shirt. This was elegant, though really any stylish tops you’d wear with jeans would also pair wonderfully with beige, white or black Palazzo trousers.

Meghan’s look was completed with glimmering gold jewellery and tan accessories. She wore her Ralph Lauren buckle belt with her trousers and a pair of suede Manolo Blahnik court shoes.

The heels were barely visible under the hems of her trouser legs, except when she was giving a speech on stage, but maximised their frame-elongating effect nevertheless. In warmer weather I’d probably reach for espadrille wedges or heeled sandals instead.

In terms of nail trends, spring is the season where pretty much anything goes. You can wear bright green just as easily as you can a neutral nail design, without either looking out of place. That said, when the possibilities are endless, narrowing them down to just one shade or design is no easy feat.

Thankfully, our team thrives off this challenge, and it's our mission not to enter a new month with the same manicure as the last. So, if you're stuck on which of the many chic spring nail colours to choose from, allow our array of sheer and creamy talons to guide the way...

It likely won't come as a surprise when we say that this month's lineup shares a few crossovers with our beauty team's March nails - along with a few of spring's nail trends, in general. Namely, where pink and sheer nail polishes are concerned.

What can we say? If it ain't broke, don't fix it - but, along with those versatile pinks, are a few brighter and expensive-looking hues that we think you'll love.

Our April hand and nailcare favourites

Before we dive into our April nail colours, allow us to first share the hand and nailcare products we've been loving.

Even with warmer weather on the horizon, dry and chapped hands are an all-year issue, so be sure to invest in one of the best hand creams. If you're a frequent manicure-getter like us, keeping your nails hydrated and strong with a cuticle oil is key too.

1. Aleesha's milky-white holiday manicure

With a holiday booked, Beauty Ecomm Editor, Aleesha Badkar opted for something very luxe and timeless for this month's manicure...

"While I really did have all the springy feels this month, I wanted to go for something quite chic and neutral to be in line with my monochrome holiday wardrobe for my trip to Abu Dhabi," explains Aleesha, adding: "So when my nail tech said they had a new milkier white in, I knew it was a match that just had to happen. Slightly translucent, with a jelly finish but a bright pigment, this was the perfect milky white for the start of spring."

2. Sennen's cherry-blossom pink nails

If there's one trend our team has been loving this spring more than the rest, it's soft and delicate cherry blossom nails - the proof of which can be found on Digital Beauty Writer Sennen Prickett's hands.

Detailing her choice, Sennen said: "For the first three months of the year, I opted for rich, moody hues that were perfectly suited for the cold wintry months. But, as the days get lighter and the weather brightens up, I decided my talons needed a subtle neutral makeover before I fully delve into spring pastels. That’s why I opted for a milky pink shade that paired effortlessly with my almond nail shape and an ultra-glossy top coat for a chic, sophisticated April manicure. As for what I requested, I opted for a milky top coat over the typical pink BIAB base coat - simple yet effective."

3. Naomi's short, butter-yellow nails

Rather than taking the subtle route like many of her colleagues, Digital Beauty Writer, Naomi Jamieson took a running leap onto the spring nail bandwagon

"Having had quite subtle nails for a few months now (first with a lavender milk shade and then a pastel pink), I was really in the mood for something bright and cheerful. For me, a light buttery-yellow was the only choice, and if I'm honest, I've been waiting to request it for months.

Tragically, pastel yellow feels very seasonal to me, so while I love it, I don't feel like I can wear it all year round. After last spring's lemon French tip nails, I've been patiently biding my time until I could pull the shade out again - and it was so worth the wait.

"While I concede that it might be something of a Marmite pick (you either love it or hate it), I adore it. The soft, creamy hue just radiates spring and adds the cutest pop of colour to my outfits. I paired it with a short oval nail shape, which I find always helps to tone down bright colours - and make them feel slightly more wearable."

4. Emily's sheer & hema-free pink nails

If you prefer to do your nails at home, Digital Lifestyle Writer, Emily Smith is making a strong case for a chic and sheer, rosy-pink look.

"Normally, I'm the sort to have an elaborate colourful design on my nails no matter the season or occasion. However, since having to go Hema-free, due to a nasty bout with contact dermatitis, I've been enjoying a simpler look," Emily remarks.

"This month, I've opted for a milky pink BIAB shade on a more rounded rectangular shape. It's a great colour for spring and might be a new go-to for me. It's pink enough to still look like a colour on the nail but its subtlety makes it extremely wearable and easy to maintain. I'll certainly be back to my bright pink French tips and star decals, but this has been a refreshing break, especially for my poor nail art brush!"

Tonal dressing is a trend that will never really fade away, as it’s an easy way to achieve a sense of sophistication with an outfit.

Combining different tones or shades of the same colour within your looks naturally makes them feel cohesive and polished. This is a trick that the Princess of Wales in particular utilises a lot with her smart-casual outfits and she’s not the only one. Amanda Holden also loves a tonal outfit, but she’s just shown that you don’t have to stick to the same colour families to make an impact.

She was recently photographed leaving the Heart Breakfast Show studios wearing a head-to-toe pastel outfit that blended dusty blue and mint green hues. The stars of this style show were the Karen Millen jacket and matching mini skirt which are both currently 50% off in the sale.

This set also comes in a rose pink, but Amanda’s blue version is a stunning option for these sunny spring days. Switching up the traditional tailored blazer style, this jacket has darts and wide, curved sleeves that give it a lot of structure. This is accentuated by the large lapel collar and the closure at the front, which leaves an angular gap when fastened.

It’s made from a soft wool blend material and so is the high-waisted skirt that goes with it. Amanda’s skirt has a straight silhouette with darted detailing running down the front for extra shaping and you could easily wear this without the jacket too. However, there’s something about a full co-ord that feels elevated and together they are very striking.

The muted blue colour of the Karen Millen set helps to balance the more ‘out-there’ design elements and was gorgeous with her silky collared shirt. This was a fresh mint green with a blue undertone to it and Amanda Holden wore it buttoned almost up to the top and tucked loosely into the top of her skirt.

The relaxed feel of the shirt and the crisp, structured co-ord brought a lovely contrast to the radio star’s outfit and the pastel hues were a triumph. Reflecting upon Amanda’s different approach to tonal dressing, woman&home’s Digital Fashion Writer Molly Smith explains that despite many people thinking otherwise, you don’t necessarily need to stick to one colour family.

"If you’re looking for ways to nail tonal dressing, you don’t exclusively need to pair the same colours; just opt for similar tones or hues in differing shades," she says. "Here, the light green and dusty blue pair seamlessly as though they are made for each other, even though they technically are from separate colour families. We also love that she’s wearing exclusively pastel shades; this is certainly the way to go this spring!"

Pastels are, as you might expect, a big spring/summer fashion trend for 2025 and even though a pastel blue isn’t in the same overarching colour as pastel green, they have a similar tone to them. A pale purple would also work well with dusty blue and green, whilst warmer pastels like apricot, lemon and rose could be styled together too to create a different kind of tonal outfit.

Amanda Holden stuck to just pastel blue and green with her Heart Breakfast Show ensemble and accessorised with blue Gianvito Rossi Plexi Pumps and a Louis Vuitton monogrammed Houston bag. Mixing the designer pieces with more affordable ones gives her entire outfit a luxurious feel and she finished off her look with over-sized sunglasses and layered chain necklaces.

The flowering of blossom trees is a telltale sign that spring has arrived and this season, our manicures are set to take inspiration from their delicate pink petals.

If you've been monitoring the 2025 nail trends, you'll no doubt have spotted that sheer and soapy pinks are proving very popular as of late - among pastel and neutral nail lovers alike. Spring especially, is signalling a shift from winter's go-to beige nails and other muted tones to fresh and blush-like hues, including one very pretty iteration. Cherry-blossom pink - like its namesake tree in the months to come - is beginning to emerge on fingernails everywhere, and it's really no surprise why. The colour is soft and creamy but offers slightly more of a pastel pop than the other pink sheer nail polishes we've been seeing.

It's both timeless and perfectly on-theme for the season. Even our beauty team's March nails featured the luxe and dainty hue and we have a feeling more of our colleagues will succumb to the trend as spring ticks on...

Why cherry blossom pink is the spring nail colour to request

Like OPI's Put It In Neutral nail colour, which has also been a trending pick, this cherry blossom-esque hue boasts a similar versatility, but it's cooler and slightly brighter. This makes it perfect for both spring and summer but thanks to its sheer and slightly milky look, it's also a very subtle and elegant option no matter the season. It also complements every nail length and shape, though we'd make a case for pairing it with short nails.

This cherry-pink look, along with the likes of lavender milk and butter yellow, is already proving popular, so now is definitely the time to request it or add a few cherry-pink polishes to your kit.

Our blossom-pink nail picks

You can take several approaches with this look, as real cherry blossoms are, of course, not always one uniform pink shade. You can, therefore, opt for a sheer and milky shade, a coral-pink or more of a bright, 'Millennial' pink - all of which are equally chic but offer slightly different feels.

I didn't want anything too bold though, so landed on this creamy, cool-toned pink and so far, I've been absolutely loving the look of it," says Naomi, adding: " It goes with everything but still perfectly reflects the sunnier days. I can see it becoming something of a signature for me, especially during wedding season."

Zara Tindall’s deep pistachio coat and leather accessories was a Cheltenham outfit combination that’s right on trend for 2025.

Day after day we’re treated to some impeccable outfits from Zara Tindall during Cheltenham Festival and this year her Day 3 look stood out thanks to its sumptuous pistachio colour. The King’s niece is often drawn to wearing different shades of green, but this earthy tone is one of the biggest spring/summer fashion trends for 2025. Zara braved the rain at the races wearing the beautifully timeless Hobbs Livia Wool coat which is made from warm Italian wool.

This design comes in several different colours, but the ‘kelp green’ version feels especially spring-like even on a grey, rainy day. According to woman&home’s Digital Fashion Writer Molly Smith, soft shades of green like Zara’s deep pistachio coat are also going to be hugely popular over the coming months.

"Soft shades of green, including pistachio, olive, and light khaki, are set to heavily trend this spring/summer with runways full of the green variations," she says. "A great way to wear this trending tone is to go bold with a statement piece such as a longline coat or jacket, just like Zara."

Of course, you don’t have to go quite as bold as she did with her Hobbs coat if you want to incorporate deep pistachio into your outfits. Picking one key item, whether it’s a jumper, skirt or dress, is an easy way to start. Style this with cream, beige and black staples to mellow the green for an outfit that’s very balanced.

Alternatively, for an even more subtle take on this trend you could add a green bag or scarf to your collection as these are less of the focus of an outfit and can be mixed and matched with different neutral looks. Zara Tindall wore her coat with her beloved Fairfax & Favor Regina knee high boots, her navy Aspinal Lottie bag and a blue patterned midi dress from Really Wild.

After wearing fascinators for the first two days of Cheltenham, Zara went for a Fedora style hat on Day 3 which brought an extra touch of elegance and formality and she wore black leather gloves too. Her dark pistachio coat was the main focus of this outfit and keeping the rest of her clothes and accessories quite muted and minimalist allowed it to really shine.

Zara looked in good spirits despite the rainy weather as she attended the races alongside her husband Mike Tindall. We’re used to seeing her at Cheltenham most, if not all, days during the festival and this means that this is likely the penultimate look of the week from her. It might just be our favourite so far and we can’t wait to see what Zara Tindall wears for the final day.

While the 2025 nail trends promise a plethora of statement and subtle looks to come - from glittering cat eye nails to milky lavender - the consensus for our March manicures seems to be soft nudes and fresh, sheer polishes. Indeed, beige nails are proving very popular, with the likes of Jennifer Lopez swapping her wintery go-to of dark, cherry-brown nails for a muted hue. That said, she has also chosen to pair it with a certain up-and-coming nail shape...

Why Jennifer Lopez's nude nails are the perfect refresher for spring

While nude nails are a favourite of Jennifer Lopez's, she has also been known to sport a darker hue. This winter, shades of burgundy and rich cherry-brown could often be spotted on her nails - both on and off the red carpet - as well as glitters and chrome French tips. Now, she has officially returned to a barely-there nude - or what we're calling the perfect clean slate for spring.

The manicure, which was created by Tom Bachik, features a subtle taper towards the tip, which is then squared off to give a very clean and modern look. Combined with the creamy nude shade, this affords a subtle but elevated finish - as Lopez proves. Trends aren’t the be-all or end-all of an outfit, but Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill’s latest look saw fashion and nail trends collide in the most fabulous way. Pastels were always going to be a spring/summer fashion trend for 2025, but butter and lemon yellow have been particularly popular recently and the retired Olympic gold medal-winning heptathlete is a fan too. Taking to Instagram on 10th March she shared a picture of her outfit, styled by the brilliant Tess Wright, for covering the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn with the BBC.

Jessica wore a pair of beautiful pale yellow trousers with a knitted waistcoat and brought a splash of vibrancy with her sunset nails that we’re eager to recreate this summer. The trousers had a crisp pleat running down each leg and looked to be mid-rise with her top tucked in.

The soft creamy yellow tone of these is not only right on trend for 2025 but screams spring/summer to us as something a little different from the other pastels like pink, mint and blue that we see a lot this time of year. Many people might be daunted by the prospect of styling yellow, but a paler hue like Jessica’s trousers is easier as a starting point.

It’s closer to cream and white and yet brings a pop of colour to an ensemble in an understated way. We’d style yellow trousers with a neutral top to balance them and tailored designs like the Olympian’s work so well as part of date night outfits with a shirt or dressier cami. Jessica wore her lemon trousers with a black sleeveless knitted waistcoat with gold buttons.

The texture of the fabric was a lovely contrast against the smartness of the structured trousers and together they nail a "smart-casual" dress code. "As we’re beginning to be treated to glimpses of sunshine, it’s only natural that zesty citrus hues are a popular choice for a spring/summer manicure - think lemon yellows and Aperol oranges," says woman&home’s Digital Beauty Writer Sennen Prickett. "As for the latter shade, the sunset-esque shade pairs perfectly with preened short square nails, as proved by Jessica Ennis-Hill, to add a vibrant seasonal pop of colour to your talons."

This nail look proves that you don’t have to have long nails to make an impact with your nail polish and, if anything, we prefer Jessica’s shorter nails with the orange tone. The orange and yellow together immediately make us think of summer sunsets and the polish was a fun addition to an otherwise very sleek outfit.

If you’re never sure exactly how to mix different colours within an outfit then following Jessica Ennis-Hill’s approach is a good way to go. Keep to one key colour with your clothes alongside neutral staples and then go for a brighter or contrasting tone on your nails as it’s noticeable but more subtle.

This isn't to say that long square and almond nails are out (they're timeless styles), but we are noticing a shift towards more understated and practical lengths. First, it was squoval nails, beloved for their neat and slightly rounded tips. Then came short square nails, which are still proving popular and now it seems classic almond is also facing a filing. Instead of the long manicures that perfectly mimic the oval shape of an almond, we'll see that signature tapered tip applied to far shorter nails - for a similarly smooth but minimalistic look.

Why short almond nails offer the ultimate chic and practical mani

While traditionally, the almond shape has been reserved for longer nails, it can (and does) still work on medium to short nails too. It's all in the tapered tip. It is worth noting though that having a longer nail bed will help you to better achieve this shape, without actually having to grow your nails too far past the top of your finger - unlike others with less space.

Similarly to square nails, more people are opting for understated lengths that, when paired with the likes of burgundy and milky white, afford a very modern and elevated finish. This is likely in part due to the popularity of natural nail looks and the overall focus on nail health that we've seen over the past few years, as longer nails can be more prone to breakage and damage.

This shape is incredibly flattering, elongating the fingers for a sleek, elegant look that suits most hand types. They offer the perfect blend of style and practicality - durable and low-maintenance but still polished enough to turn heads. It’s a go-to for everyday wear but with a sophisticated edge."

What are short almond nails

As the name suggests, short almond nails offer the same tapered tip as a classic almond manicure but minus the usual length we tend to see. That said, they don't go as short as squoval, round or square nails, as Huber-Millet explains: "The almond nail shape does require some length to achieve that tapered teardrop effect. If you haven’t got enough free edge (but don’t want to reach for extensions), squoval might be your best bet. It’s still super flattering, with curves rather than corners, but there’s no need for natural nail length."

How to shape short almond nails

Speaking from experience, bear in mind that once filed in the short almond shape, your nails might look a bit crazy, but as soon as your chosen polish is applied, the tapered sides will look less dramatic.

If you're planning to do your talons at home, Huber-Millet says: "While we always recommend a professional manicure, especially when it comes to impeccable cuticle work, you can, of course, achieve the look at home. Just go slowly - the almond nail curves gradually, and if you unintentionally file straight lines, it’ll take some time to grow out again.

"Start by gently rounding the corners, then taper either side towards the middle of the nail, leaving the lower section as the widest part. Always file in one direction rather than a seesaw motion to avoid splitting the nail."

Not to mention the resurgence of leopard print in the fashion world. Before we lose the subtle nail lovers among us, we do concede that animal print isn't for everyone. But we also think it gets an unfairly bad rap in manicure form. Fur-inspired patterns can look very stylish (just as they can on clothing) when done in the right way.

8 animal print nails that do bold in a chic and versatile way

While animal print designs can be a tad contentious, manicures with spots and stripes can look very elevated and are even regarded by some as timeless designs. Take leopard print nails, for instance, or 2024's favourite tortoiseshell nails. Both patterns can be executed in very stylish ways, the key is not to overdo it - unless, of course, you're partial to bold colours and statement nail art.

When married with neutral nails, for instance, or beige nails, leopard print can look right at home. A French tip nail look can also help tone things down, allowing the print to be more of an accent. For our beauty team's Christmas nails, Digital Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim embraced the rise of animal print with this chic tiger-stripe manicure. She opted for a milky pink base colour, to offset the bolder pattern, while the tiger print was finished in a gold glitter.

The choice of short, square nails also brings an element of subtlety to this design, which we love. While this was, of course, Fiona's festive manicure of choice, the look will also work for any party - or just when you're in the mood to zhush up your block nail colours.

Though we recommend reserving these intricate designs for the skilful hands of your nail tech, if you're determined to give yourself an animal print manicure at home, you'll need to invest in a thin nail detailing brush. The Duchess of Edinburgh wore a tan-coloured roll neck jumper in her second birthday portrait, paired with green wide-leg trousers and a longline coat. Sadly, we can’t see too much of her boots in the celebratory snaps but it looks like they are a reddish brown.

I like to think of myself as a rational person, but sometime between October and November last year, I might as well have swapped my job title from Beauty Writer to investigative journalist. Maybe it was the spontaneously-booked Christmas trip to our first-ever holiday destination (seven years prior) that tipped me off, or my boyfriend's comical double-take at every jewellery shop we passed in the weeks leading up to it. Regardless, by the time December 1st arrived, my list of 'clues' was a mile long and my nail appointment was booked. Now, while neutral nail designs are typically the go-to for such an occasion, 10% of my brain (that realistic and rational portion), was saying: "What if you're wrong?"

Thus, I steered clear of the hues traditionally thought of as bridal and instead, picked my favourite nail colour. One that would not only remain timeless (it's still a contender on the 2025 nail trends) but also perfectly complement the season, location and, yes, spare me any embarrassment should I come home ring-less...

The timeless but unexpected colour I picked for my proposal nails

At this point, you probably have two pressing questions. The first, what colour did I pick and the second, did I actually get proposed to? Just to be cruel, I'll tackle the former.

I opted for a rich, dark red (specifically Bio Sculpture's Thornberry shade) over almond nails, as I'd been deliberately growing my nails out with the classic combination in mind. Red is, of course, a popular and simple Christmas nail option, so I felt it gave me the perfect cover, should the worst happen and no ring was presented to me.

Thankfully, experts have since validated my potentially rogue pick. "Red nails are a classic choice for engagement nails because they’re timeless, elegant and photograph really well against jewellery," says Tinu Bello, celebrity nail artist and Mylee ambassador: "If my clients think they are about to get engaged, I recommend a deep crimson or bright cherry shade as they will make your new ring pop in photos. I really love the Mylee polishes in the aptly named 'Kiss Kiss' and 'French Can Can'."

Bello also adds that: "Red nails work beautifully with all skin tones and pair well with just about any engagement outfit, so you’ll feel polished and put together no matter when the proposal happens," this was exactly my thinking. Like milky white, nude or black, red - in all its shade iterations - is a timeless nail colour. It will never really go out of style, meaning you're unlikely to look back at your engagement pictures and regret your choice of red talons.

Personally, I think you couldn't pick a chicer colour for a winter or Christmastime proposal, though perhaps I'm a tad biased...

“I decided I wanted something a little more magical as we go into December.” Becky adds: “I even travel back to Bristol for my favourite nail tech, Hannah (I quite literally trust nobody else with these nails). I had loads of compliments on these nails, too – so you could say they were spreading joy (very festive)."

To create a simplistic yet effective-looking twinkly star, a dotting tool - like this set from Amazon - can be a real game-changer, as you can simply add a dot of silver or gold to your nail and then, using a thin brush, (or your dotting tool) drag out lines from the centre to create that star shape. We'd recommend creating four lines on each side and then adding a smaller line between each, before adding a diamante on top of your initial middle dot to finish.

Alternatively, you can paint a diamond shape but drag out each tip to give a more star-like effect. You can also use stencils or even a star-shaped stamper to create more precise and uniform stars.

Beloved for their elegance, classic French tip nails have had a renaissance this year with every season ushering in a new iteration - from lemon French tips to glamorous chromes. That said, winter might just take the crown for the most interesting interpretation, by way of Sandra Oh's latest manicure. Instead of the traditional nail tip-mimicking style, where the colour follows the natural curving edge, Oh opted to envelop the entire top half of her talons in a chic, shimmery burgundy.

The result? An interesting - and conversation-sparking - manicure. Indeed our beauty team was divided between finding the look slightly jarring and playfully refreshing. So, if you're looking for a unique winter nail look - or perhaps a more straightforward approach to a French tip (especially if you're doing your nails at home) - here's a closer look at Sandra Oh's unconventional manicure...

Why Sandra Oh's 'dipped' nails might be the modern winter mani to try

If you're yet to set eyes on Sandra Oh's unusual manicure, the best way we can think of to describe the design is that her almond nails have been dipped in colour. Unlike a traditional French tip, which only lines the edge of your nails in your chosen shade (and typically boasts a curve), Oh's cuts a straight line across the middle of her talon, coating half in molten, shimmery burgundy, and the other in just a clear coat - allowing her natural nail to peek through. Where the two contrasting sides meet, you can also spy a thin silver line, intersecting them.

As mentioned, the nail look sparked quite the debate among our beauty team, with half finding the design a bit strange, as from afar the dark block tip makes Oh's nails look half the length. Meanwhile, the others thought it was a fun (and more straightforward) approach to a French manicure and that the colourway was perfect for winter styling.

Oh debuted the polarizing manicure - created by nail artist, Shigeko Taylor - at the 2024 Academy Museum Gala on October 19th, paired with a black and white gown, and then again on October 26th, at the 20th-anniversary screening of Sideways in California. It was there that she wore a chic white shirt, an olive blazer and cream-tailored trousers. While the look may sound out there - and despite our team's initial reservations - it complemented both outfits perfectly. The combination of her timeless blazer ensemble with the bolder design, especially, really worked.

In fact, it offers a less fiddly and more beginner-friendly alternative to a French tip, as it's not as detailed and you don't need to be as precise with your line - a point all our team agreed on. It's also ideal if you find dark nail colours a tad daunting and thus, don't want to commit to having your entire nail painted in a burgundy or glossy black, for instance.

How to recreate the look

To replicate Oh's unusual but stylish manicure, we recommend opting for a similar almond shape and either a clear or sheer pink base coat. Apply two layers and then, using a thin nail art brush (like this one), take your chosen burgundy shade and draw a line across the centre of your nail. For a really precise and clean line, you can cover half of your nail in tape before painting said line. Then simply fill the rest of your nail up to the tip, using either a bigger brush or the brush that comes with your nail polish.

To elevate the look further - and hide any blending or wobbles where the two sides meet - take your thin nail brush again and paint another line across in silver, or gold for a more festive finish.

While square and almond styles remain a timeless option, short squoval nails are proving to be this season's must-have look. As someone with stubbornly short nails, I just had to try the hybrid shape...

If you're at all familiar with the 2024 nail trends, you'll know that there's one shape, in particular, that is earning a lot of love - on and off social media - for its functionality, versatility and overall chicness. That shape goes by the name of squoval and as the name would suggest, combines elements from both a square and oval manicure. As someone who spends much of her time researching and partaking in nail trends, I decided to swap my go-to almond nails (only achieved through gel extensions, I confess) for the popular, understated style.

So, if you've been considering squoval nails too but are perhaps unsure of how they will look, especially when paired with trending autumn nail designs, here's why they're now my go-to...

Why a short squoval shape is my new go-to for enhancing my natural nails

First things first, for those who don't know, squoval nails are an amalgamation of two shapes. Effectively, they're square nails with rounded edges - picture your fingernails with a flat and straight tip that gently curves down on each side. This affords a softer and more natural appearance to your nails than that of a classic square manicure.

The style is flattering on all lengths but especially shorter talons, hence why they're so popular, especially among those of us who opt for BIAB nails and BioSculpture, which are designed to protect the natural nail whilst it grows out.

Now, to give you a little context on my preferences, I do love a longer almond manicure but thanks to my typing-heavy job, I often find them cumbersome. Not to mention the fact that my nails refuse to actually grow long enough to achieve the look naturally, so I have to do so through gel extensions. These can be pricey and leave my nails in quite a state afterwards, so lately, I've been embracing my natural length. Thus, when I spotted my favourite dark nail colour emerging among the short autumn nail trends, paired with the popular shape, I couldn't help but ask my nail tech for: "Burgundy squoval nails, please!"

My verdict on short squoval nails

To cut right to the chase, I love my short squoval nails. Ahead of my appointment, my natural nails had just passed the edge of my fingertips, except for two on my left hand, which had broken days prior (heartbreaking, I know). The squoval shape gave them uniformity, despite some being slightly shorter than others, and made the length look very intentional, healthy and dare I say, chic.

The edges feel smooth but strong and I have found I'm not catching them on clothing or my skin as I do with harsher square shapes - and even more beloved almond nails. Length-wise, they just graze the top of my fingertips, which not only makes my nails look very neat but also means that they're very manageable - and don't cause that excessive clacking noise on my keyboard.

All in all, the style is very comfortable and when paired with a rich, merlot-like shade (or any of the dark nail trends really), the effect is so modern and expensive-looking. I also opted for BioSculpture, so my nails feel very protected and the shine is just gorgeous. I would say this style of manicure is ideal if you're looking for an easy but elevated everyday look - and to enhance your natural, short nails. Why we're dashing to request Sofía Vergara's plum wine nails
