Few makeup products can enliven the complexion quite like blush. But while shade and formulation certainly matter, blush placement can have just as much impact on the finished look.

It’s something the professionals know well – legendary makeup artist Patti Dubroff (whose client roster includes Priyanka Chopra, Margot Robbie and Kirsten Dunst) included. “Blush is one of my favourite ways to shape and sculpt the face, and it’s all about placement,” she explains.

Recently taking to Instagram, Dubroff demonstrated three different looks using the same cream blush, simply switching up where she applied it. If you typically apply your best blusher the same way every day, it could be time to reconsider.

Of the three techniques demonstrated, we were especially drawn to Dubroff’s ‘lifted’ blush trick. Rather than concentrating colour on the apples of the cheeks, she takes it higher and further out towards the temples. For a lifted look, Dubroff recommends taking your blush along the tops of the cheekbones.

Before going in, she takes “a little bit of the colour onto the brush” and blends it into the back of her hand first, allowing her to build the colour gradually. “The blush placement is going to stay high towards the temple to give the illusion of a lift,” she explains. It’s a simple but effective trick, and one worth trying if you’re guilty of some of the most common blusher mistakes, like taking your colour too low or too close to the nose.

For an outdoorsy flush, Dubroff creates what she calls a “windswept look”, switching to a flatter brush and taking the blush straight across the cheeks. “This one is more of a straight-across placement to mimic, you know, a day in the sunshine, out on the moors, windswept,” she says.

Dubroff uses Chanel N°1 de Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm in Vital Beige throughout, but any easy-to-blend formula will work. REFY Water Blush is another lightweight pick that delivers a sheer, healthy-looking flush.

Her final technique is all about recreating a sun-kissed glow. Using a stippling brush, Dubroff applies the blush “a little more generously wherever the sun naturally hits”, sweeping it over the cheeks and temples and across the bridge of the nose. It’s not dissimilar to the sunset blush technique, which uses warm, red-orange tones across the cheeks and nose to create a realistic sun flush.

Interestingly, Dubroff favours blush over bronzer for the effect: “I really like to use a blush instead of a bronzer because I feel like it’s more alive.” Shade choice is key here, too. Dubroff opts for Chanel’s Vital Beige, an earthy hue that could almost pass for bronzer, helping to create that softly bronzed flush.

Sienna Miller has always subscribed to the idea that less is more. Rather than reinventing her beauty look with every passing trend, she's stayed loyal to a signature aesthetic: brushed-up brows, radiant skin and a slick of kohl liner.

Having worked with Charlotte Tilbury for years, it's fair to say Miller has picked up a few insider tricks along the way. Now the face of the brand's new Pillow Talk in Bloom campaign, she's recently shared one of her favourites: the 'airbrush sandwich hack' – a technique she says keeps her complexion looking fresh and alive while ensuring her base "will not budge".

Rather than relying on heavy layers of makeup that can leave the complexion looking cakey, the three-step technique is designed to lock everything in place without sacrificing that skin-like finish. Especially useful during a heatwave, scroll on to discover the steps and products involved.

What is the 'airbrush sandwich hack'?

The 'sandwich' element comes from the order in which products are applied. Miller begins by misting her complexion with Charlotte Tilbury's Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray. While it's still drying down, she lightly stipples Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder over the areas she wants to stay shine-free – focusing on the T-zone rather than dusting powder across her entire face. She then finishes with another veil of setting spray to lock everything into place.

"I'm just going to use the Airbrush Setting Spray – so hydrating and nourishing. While that is setting, I'm going to re-powder, and that's going to sandwich it all in and keep everything airbrushed," she explains in the Instagram video.

"I know that my makeup will not budge. It still looks dewy and glowy and fresh and alive, but we all know it's been powdered and sealed. It doesn't feel that way – it feels like my skin can still breathe, but it's not going to move."

The key to achieving that fresh, skin-like finish is choosing a setting powder that won't leave skin looking flat or chalky. Charlotte Tilbury's best-selling formula is finely milled and blended with moisture-boosting emollient ingredients, allowing it to blur the complexion without emphasising texture. As Tilbury previously explained on This Morning, “if they're finely milled and have lots of emollients in them, they are actually incredible smoothing and blurring.”

If you've ever wondered why your makeup looks flawless in the mirror at home but somehow different the moment you step outside, you're not imagining it. The instinct is usually to blame the product - wrong shade, wrong formula, needs setting spray - but according to one professional makeup artist, the real culprit is usually far simpler, and far easier to fix.

In a woman&home Instagram reel, a professional makeup artist breaks down the one mistake she says almost everyone makes when they do their makeup – and it has nothing to do with technique or products. You could you use the best foundation on the market or the most professional brushes and still not see the results you want. The reason? It's all to do with the lighting.

"Most of us do our makeup in our bathrooms," says professional makeup artist, Caroline Barnes. And most bathrooms, she points out, only have one window, so "you've only got the light hitting you from one side." The alternative is just as tricky - no natural light at all, just, as she puts it, "these little round ceiling lights," the kind of overhead downlighting that flattens and distorts how your complexion actually looks.

The fix? Natural lighting. For anyone without reliable daylight, Barnes points to lighted mirrors as the next best thing, name-checking one she's recently discovered from Looking Glass – for the way the light sits around the edge of the glass rather than overhead. The reasoning: "the makeup will read exactly how you see it in daylight," so what you apply at your mirror matches what people will see when you're "talking to friends" outside.

One thing worth knowing before you buy a lighted mirror, though: some come with a toggle between a cool and a warm setting, and picking the wrong one "can really throw off your makeup" – so it's worth choosing a mirror with a daylight setting specifically, rather than whichever one happens to be switched on.

Affordable alternatives with a 'daylight' setting:

No lighted mirror? There's a workaround. Asked by woman&home's Beauty Director, Sarah Cooper-White, whether a small bathroom mirror propped on a windowsill would do the same job as a proper lighted mirror, the MUA's answer is more about positioning than kit. Her fix is what she calls a "sticky, sucky mirror" - a basic suction mirror - placed literally at eye level. The logic: when the mirror sits at the right height, you see your face "in your best shape, your best form," and that's what lets you "create the best type of makeup."

Why it's worth the effort

Whether you're applying your makeup with minimal natural light or bad indoor lighting, both scenarios cause the same problem: you're applying makeup under lighting that doesn't match how your face will look once you're out in the world, whether that's daylight or the lighting at a friend's house. "That's five, six minutes just wasted," Barnes says, as you have to start all over again or just go on about your day wearing a look you don't like.

Her advice is refreshingly simple. If you do have access to daylight, or any of the snazzy mirrors she suggested, position your mirror so it's facing the window, not your back to it. "So you've got a bit of light even in the face," she explains - and "instantly, without makeup, you'll look better," because you can actually see what you're working with.

Beyond precision, Barnes frames good lighting as something closer to self-care than technique: "just for pure pleasure and boosting your self-esteem, putting your makeup on in a good light... is really key to getting a great job done." Whether that's a lighted mirror or simply turning to face a window, the underlying point is the same – the light you apply your makeup in is doing more work than any product in your bag.

We’ve written about the beauty team trip SPFs, and the flattering body oil that made all the models look extra amazing on camera, but this mascara was the hero of our summer photoshoot trip, according to beauty director Sarah Cooper-White.

“I’m incredibly fussy when it comes to mascaras,” she admits. “I have hooded eyes, so I’m always frustrated by formulas that transfer to my eyelids, but this really wowed me. There was zero smudging or transfer - even during incredibly long days. We would often start working at 5 am, getting back from dinner at 10 pm, and the mascara would still be pristine.”

The fact that this is a tubing mascara is what made it so durable, and why they’re a great way to stop mascara smudging. Tubing mascaras create a ‘tube’ of pigment around every lash rather than just coating them in colour. Fiona's forever-favourite

For Digital Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim, it's a twist on an iconic Charlotte Tilbury product that she'd happily wear for a lifetime: "If I could tattoo my lips in Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Love Effect in Naughty Talk, I honestly would. This shade has been my constant companion since I picked a tube up at the opening of Tilbury’s Covent Garden flagship (Googled for context: that was January 2025).

"The sheer, dusky colour is my perfect neutral - not too pink, which can scan a bit 'Barbie' with blonde hair, not too beige and deathly-looking against pale skin. It’s basically the colour I wish my lips were naturally. Unlike the original Pillow Talk, this Love Effect range has got some sheen, so is comfy and easy to slick on; no need to faff around with liner. "Is this a safe space to admit that I'm not a huge lipstick fan? I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm guilty of having ‘blush blindness’. For the uninitiated, it's the social media term for gradually becoming desensitised to how much of your best blusher you're applying.

An easy blusher mistake to make, I’ve come to realise that less is more – especially during the warmer months. Heavy cream and powder combinations can quickly start to look obvious in the heat, while lighter textures tend to melt into the skin instead of sitting on top of it. Add in a little natural warmth from the sunshine, and you simply don't need as much product to achieve that fresh, healthy look.

Founded by influencer Jess Hunt and beauty entrepreneur Jenna Meek, Refy first landed on the beauty scene in 2020 with Brow Sculpt – a product that quickly achieved cult status after going viral on social media. While the brand initially built its reputation on fluffy, brushed-up brows, it's since expanded into complexion products – the latest being Water Blush.

Part of the new Watercolour collection, the blush launched alongside Water Bronzer and the Duo Brush 2.0 – a dual-ended brush designed with one side for bronzer and the other for blush. "Watercolour came from wanting make-up to feel lighter, more intuitive and easier to wear," say Hunt and Meek. "We wanted to create something that fits around how you live, not something you have to plan or perfect."

Drawing inspiration from Korean cushion compacts, the packaging also makes it refreshingly foolproof. Rather than squeezing out too much product from a tube or bottle, you simply press your brush into the cushion before sweeping it over the cheeks.

While I don't usually advocate buying a new makeup brush for the sake of it (your existing blush brush will probably do the job just fine), I have to admit the Duo Brush 2.0 is exceptionally good. Its fluffy bristles diffuse the pigment beautifully, making it even harder to overapply.

Warm weather is the ultimate test for your makeup routine. We all want a base that can go the distance – from our morning coffee to evening drinks – without so much as a touch-up in between.

The trouble is that makeup and heat have never been natural bedfellows. It's a familiar scene: a full face applied with care at 8 am, only for it to have all but disappeared by lunchtime. The issue is we sweat more and produce more oil when temperatures climb, while heat itself softens the waxes and oils that bind our favourite formulas, causing them to slip and slide throughout the day.

The result is a very particular set of summer dramas: mascara that migrates beneath the lower lash line, SPF that disrupts a painstakingly blended base, bronzer that veers into disco-ball territory rather than a believable sun-kissed glow. Here, professional makeup artist Caroline Barnes shares her top expert tips that will help your makeup withstand the warm weather without a midday meltdown.

Tip 1: Use a tubing mascara

If your mascara has been sliding south by lunchtime, you're not alone. “Are you struggling with mascara?” says Barnes. “Maybe it’s diluting underneath your eyes in these hot, steamy days, but then when you put your best waterproof mascara on, you don't get the same va va voom that your normal mascara gives you.”

Her fix isn't a waterproof formula at all, but rather a tubing mascara. Instead of coating the lashes in a pigment that can smudge and transfer in the heat, tubing formulas wrap each lash in a flexible little “tube” of colour that holds firm through sweat and humidity. Then at the end of the day, it slides off intact with warm water alone.

“My favourite tubing mascara is RUM, actually designed by beauty experts in the industry (Sali Hughes, Sam Jones and Jo Jones) – they know what they're talking about when it comes to mascara, and the brush is brilliant.” The formula's appeal for summer is how it comes away. “This comes off with warm water, so no oils on your skin can dilute it. It will stay put, and your lashes will look lovely until you remove them purely with water.”

Tip 2: Invest in a sunscreen spray

We've all been there: you’re out for lunch when you suddenly remember you didn't top up your SPF before you left the house. Barnes' solution is to keep a mist-on facial sunscreen in your bag for exactly this moment. “How about that drama when you're sitting having a lovely glass of rosé with your friend for lunch, and you can feel that sun beating down, and you haven't put your SPF on?” she says. “Just have a spray SPF that can literally go on over your makeup.”

Her pick is the Bondi Sands mist. “It's really, really lovely and light, so it doesn't disrupt any of the hard work you did when you put your makeup on, but it protects your skin,” she explains. Keep it in your handbag, she says, and reapplying becomes second nature rather than an afterthought. “If you just leave it in your bag, you will always have that everyday protection.”

Tip 3: Swap powder bronzer for cream

“One of my makeup bugbears, I suppose I'll call it that, is powdery, very glittery bronzers in the summer,” she says. During the warmer months, the sun sits much higher in the sky, so shimmer that looks pretty in low winter light can suddenly appear harsh and overly obvious. “These kinds of products are great in the winter when the light is low, and we need to elevate that light from our face, but not necessarily in the summer.”

Her alternative is to use your best cream bronzer with zero shimmer. “That's why I would suggest Vieve, or any cream bronzer without any kind of sparkle,” she says. “It just gives you a very natural and real sun-kissed finish to your skin without registering like makeup.”

And if you're fair-skinned and a traditional bronzer feels too deep, reach for a cream blush instead. “If you haven't got warm, tanned skin that would actually work with a bronzer, use a lovely cream blush that's got a little bit of pink in it,” Barnes advises. She's currently loving Violette's new Plume Blush in Latte Praline. “It's really beautiful against pale skin, and it will just elevate your skin, giving it that sun-kissed look in a natural way.”

I'll be honest, I'm normally a lightweight-foundation loyalist - I only reach for anything heavier-coverage when there's a big event on the calendar. But this heatwave has tested that routine like nothing else. Even my usual "lightweight" formulas have started to feel like too much - anything with a bit of weight to it shifts by lunchtime, sits in the heat rather than on top of it, and by 4pm I'm dabbing at my T-zone wondering why I bothered in the first place.

So this summer, I've put even my best lightweight foundations to one side in favour of something that suits the weather - and my patience levels - far better: the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick.

My one tip: keep what's underneath light. I'd recommend opting for lightweight, hydrating skincare products rather than anything rich or balm-like, so the stick has a smooth, breathable base to glide over.

So if this summer has you sweating through your foundation by lunchtime, this is the one product in my routine that's actually kept up with the heat - and I don't see myself going back once the temperatures finally drop.

If there's one product that's become an absolute non-negotiable during this heatwave, it's my face mist. It's living in my bag, my desk drawer, and is even one of my cooling beauty products in the fridge, and I've been reaching for it constantly - a spritz the second I walk in from the heat, another mid-afternoon when I need reviving, and one more before bed for good measure. But when your makeup's already on, does that same spritz do more harm than good?

"We remember to drink more water when it's hot, but we often forget that our skin gets dehydrated too," says facialist and skincare expert Anel Lamaine, founder of Skin By Anel Lamine. Face mist vs makeup setting spray vs fixing spray: what's the difference?

This is where things get confusing, because a face mist and a makeup setting spray can look almost identical in the bottle - but they're doing very different jobs.

A face mist is a skincare product, first and foremost. Its goal is to hydrate and refresh your skin, not to interact with your makeup at all. It's not designed to "lock" anything in place.

A makeup setting spray (also called a fixing or finishing spray) is a makeup product. It's formulated with polymers and film-forming ingredients that help your foundation, concealer and powder stay put, resist transfer, and last longer through the day (or night). Some also help blend product into the skin, reduce a cakey or powdery finish, and add a bit of a natural glow or matte look, depending on the formula. Crucially, it's designed to sit on top of makeup and help it adhere - that's its whole purpose.

So while both come out of a spray bottle and both might contain some hydrating ingredients, one is skincare (face mist) and one is makeup (setting/fixing spray). Knowing which one you're reaching for matters more than you'd think.

So, can you spray a face mist over makeup?

In most cases, yes. Face mists tend to have a very fine, light spray function, which means they won't leave your face dripping wet or disturb your makeup underneath. Instead, you get a refreshing moment and a boost of lasting hydration, without your foundation sliding around.

If you're someone who likes to mist throughout the day to combat dryness or just to cool off, a light spritz over makeup shouldn't cause any issues - especially with modern, long-wear formulas.

That said, if you're at all worried about your makeup shifting, there's an easy fix: make sure it's properly set first. Press a light layer of setting powder over your base, then follow with a strong makeup fixing spray to lock everything in. Once that's had a moment to dry down, you can mist away with your face mist later in the day without disrupting anything underneath.

When to reach for a setting spray instead

If you're heading to an event where your makeup needs to survive hours on end - think a wedding, a big evening out, or anything with a "no touch-ups allowed" energy - a makeup setting spray is the better choice over a face mist.

Setting sprays aren't going to give you that same cooling, hydrating refresh a face mist will, but they will help enhance the finish of your makeup and offer a touch of hydration too, all while working to keep everything in place. Think of it as prioritising longevity over that instant refreshed feeling.

The more important question: what about spraying over SPF?

Honestly, I think this is the question worth paying more attention to. Misting over your sunscreen is a bit more nuanced than misting over makeup, because there's a risk you could be diluting or shifting your SPF protection rather than just your foundation.

The good news is that if you've given your sunscreen enough time to properly settle into the skin before misting, you should be fine. Most SPFs need a few minutes to bind to the skin, so try to build in a little buffer between applying sunscreen and reaching for your mist.

If you like the idea of a two-in-one, there are now SPF face mists on the market designed to top up your sun protection throughout the day, on top of makeup or bare skin.

"The one product I never leave home without in summer is a facial SPF spray," says Lamine. "So many people apply SPF as part of their morning routine and then completely forget about it for the rest of the day, but sun protection isn't a one-and-done step. A mist makes reapplication incredibly easy, especially if you're wearing makeup."

It's worth knowing these tend to be less cooling and hydrating than a standard face mist, since the formula is prioritising sun protection over that refreshing feel - but they're a handy option if reapplying cream or spray SPF over makeup feels like too much.

The verdict

A quick spritz of face mist over makeup is generally fine, thanks to that fine, gentle spray most formulas use. If you want extra peace of mind, set your makeup properly first with powder and a fixing spray. Save setting sprays for when longevity is the priority, and if SPF is in the mix, just give it time to settle before you mist - or consider switching to an SPF mist to keep your protection topped up.

When celebrity lash artist Edy Kurowska did my wedding lashes last year, they were everything I'd hoped for: full, fluttery, and so natural nobody clocked they weren't mine. Turns out I'm in good company – Trinny Woodall, Rita Ora and Zoë Kravitz are all regular clients of hers too.

Until now, booking an appointment at Edy’s London salon (where a full set cost £360) was the only way to get the look. Her new £45 DIY lash kit hopes to change that. Before applying a single lash, Edy considers each client's facial proportions, bone structure and eyebrow shape to create a bespoke finish.

“To me, lashes should frame the eye beautifully, not overwhelm it,” she says. It's why Trinny has trusted Edy with her lashes for years, previously explaining on Instagram that heavier extensions can end up “wearing the person,” whereas Edy's work simply looks like you're genetically blessed with great lashes.

I tried Edy London's Pre-Glued Lash Clusters - here are my honest thoughts

As beauty trends have shifted towards softer, more minimal makeup, Edy has seen a growing demand for that natural-looking finish beyond the salon. "I started getting DMs from around the world asking if I could train people in their city, fly out to them, or recommend someone in their area who could match my work," she tells me. "Of course, being in multiple locations at once isn't possible, so the answer became clear – I needed to create a kit that would allow people to recreate my signature look at home."

I've had my fair share of lash disasters over the years. There was always someone at university who could apply a strip lash in seconds without so much as glancing in a mirror. That person definitely wasn’t me. Even the best false eyelashes would inevitably end up wonky, peeling away at the corners or refusing to match on both eyes.

So when Edy invited me to her London salon to try the new Pre-Glued Lash Clusters, I was curious to see whether they really could be as straightforward as she claimed. Unlike traditional strip lashes, these are applied in small sections underneath your natural lashes rather than across the entire lash line. It took me a few minutes to get into a rhythm, but once I'd placed the first couple of clusters, I found them surprisingly intuitive.

Using a pair of tweezers (£10 at Edy London Beauty if you don't already own some), you simply position each cluster just above the waterline before gently pressing it into place. “My top tip is don't rush and don't overcomplicate it – these are much easier to apply than people think,” assures Edy. “If you can apply mascara, you can absolutely do this. Simply pick up the cluster, place it on and press gently to secure, using tweezers or just your finger.”

Each pack contains clusters in different lengths, allowing you to create a finish that's tailored to your own eye shape. I opted for shorter pieces through the inner corner before gradually building to longer clusters on the outer edge, creating that softly lifted effect Edy is known for. The result is defined yet subtle and, unlike strip lashes, there wasn't a thick band sitting heavily across my eyelid.

The collection includes seven styles inspired by cities around the world, each designed to create a slightly different look. Paris is the most natural, with light brown fibres that are ideal if your lashes have become finer or lighter over time, while Warsaw most closely recreates the look of Edy's signature salon extensions. If you prefer a little more texture, Seoul takes inspiration from the soft, separated look of a Korean lash lift.

Tokyo is designed to create a wide-eyed effect and is particularly flattering on hooded lids. It's also Trinny Woodall's go-to style. "They're perfect for infills between her salon appointments because they match exactly what I do on her eyes in person. If her lashes start to shed between visits, she can simply pop on a quick infill at home, and it blends seamlessly with her salon look," says Edy.

You can remove the clusters each evening, storing them back in the box to reuse up to five times, or leave them in place for several days. “After the first 24 hours, they adjust to your body temperature, so you can shower, swim and exercise with them on,” says Edy. “When you're ready to remove them, gently peel them away – they won't pull your natural lashes.”

More cluster lashes I rate...

After wearing lash extensions for my wedding, I didn't think I'd find an at-home alternative that came close. These don't completely replace the experience of having a bespoke set applied by an expert, but they're the closest I've tried. If you've always loved the look of professional extensions but found traditional strip lashes fiddly or intimidating, they're well worth considering.

Beauty journalists - particularly this one, in this column - love to go off on little tangents. Show me an opportunity to romanticise a perfume or intellectualise a serum, and I'm right there.

Then again, sometimes a product is so straightforwardly good, there's no need to overegg the pudding. I'll get to my 1000+ words on facts alone. You'll need to blend, of course, so you could use a sponge or a brush if you want to. However, unlike many drier sticks which really do need a tool to blend, I find Your Skin is so soft and malleable that fingers are just fine, and the warmth of my hands really melts the formula in. It's all so easy.

How's the lasting power? Pretty good. I wore this consistently during a heatwave on my oil- and warmth-prone skin, and got a good half day of perfect coverage.

Fiona's thoughts on Merit's Clean Volume Mascara

Already being a big fan of Merit's OG mascara, Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim, was slightly apprehensive to try the new formula. "I’ve written before about my love of Clean Lash - Merit's tubing mascara that gives a perfect everyday look that’s completely smudge-proof. Despite this new iteration having one of those tiny comb-like wands I adore above all else, I approached it with some scepticism."

"I presumed that, like most volumising mascaras, it would look a bit ‘much’ for my tastes and transfer onto my hooded lids in a hot second. But I’m not too proud to admit I was wrong." As for how the mascara in question actually stood up, Fiona notes: "This isn’t actually a drama-maxxer; it still looks chilled-out and natural in line with the brand's ethos, but simply adds a bit more curl and flutter vs Clean Lash."

If you were also wondering what the lasting power of this best tubing mascara is, Fiona reveals: "Also, as my testing day unfolded and my lids remained mysteriously transfer-free, I realised this formula is also impervious to smudging because it’s also a tubing mascara. Heavenly! You have to respect a brand that sticks to its guns with formulations - and it's nice to have a slightly more glam, nighttime-y version of the OG."

Aleesha's thoughts on Merit's Clean Volume Mascara

Lift and curl are the main priorities for Beauty eCommerce Editor, Aleesha Badkar, when it comes to a mascara – but definition comes swiftly in third place. Upon first impressions, Aleesha says: "I was so surprised at the size and composition of the brush - it's much smaller and finer than I'd expect from a volume mascara - but boy did it win me over."

"Lift is usually my main issue and this allowed me to get right to the roots for an immediate boost, and meant that the cleanup afterwards (which usually requires at least a few cotton buds) was minimal. I usually stick to lightweight formulas that give a bit of lift while holding my curl, then sweep on a bit of a volumising mascara over the top if I'm after more drama," she notes.

Despite having high expectations for mascaras, this formula went above and beyond in Aleesha's eyes: "This mascara did it all in a single swipe - lift, volume, definition and a gorgeous fanned-out finish, without dropping or weighing my lashes down, even in a heatwave. I loved the formula, too; it dried quickly and moved through my lashes brilliantly, gummy rather than wet, so it grips and builds without clumping. Consider me converted."

Naomi's thoughts on Merit's Clean Volume Mascara

We have another fan of Merit's Clean Lash Mascara in the house. Yes, Digital Beauty Writer, Naomi Jamieson, reaches for this formula every single day: "Merit's Clean Lash is already my go-to, everyday mascara, so you can imagine how excited I was to try the brand's new volumising option, and I'm pleased to report that I love it just as much as the original lengthening formula."

Getting into the nitty gritty of the application, Naomi reveals: "I'm a big fan of how thin the brush is, as it delivers easy precision and really helps you coat every lash, root to tip, without any messiness or risk of a rogue bristle stabbing you in the eye (I tend to steer clear of chunky brushes for this very reason)."

In fact, the results speak for themselves. As Naomi notes: "From the very first coat, my lashes looked immediately lifted and elongated, but crucially, not clumpy. I also tend to prefer black over brown mascaras, but the tint of this one looks so natural and really affords that subtle, 'your-lashes-but-better' effect."

Sennen's thoughts on Merit's Clean Volume Mascara

For context, Digital Beauty Writer, Sennen Prickett, doesn't typically opt for volumising mascaras – instead, preferring lengthening and curling buys. "I typically choose the best mascaras for straight lashes that will add long-lasting length and curl, so you can imagine my surprise when I actually loved this all-new volumising mascara from Merit Beauty upon first application," she says.

The dainty brush also caught Sennen's eye upon first inspection: "Immediately after pulling the wand out of the tube, I noticed its teeny tiny bristled brush. Despite being sceptical, I found it really gets in there at the roots and thoroughly coats every lash."

As for the effect it had on Sennen's lashes, she says: "It instantly saw a boost in volume, without leaving the lashes looking spidery or clumpy. Instead, it gives the lashes a fuller, fanned out appearance, whilst remaining natural-looking. I also tested out the brown shade, which only aided the soft and subtle results."

Nobody understands how to build a flattering and long-lasting beauty look like a professional makeup artist - particularly those who work with celebrities to create magazine cover-worthy makeup.

With decades of experience and industry know-how, pro MUAs are justifiably fussy about which products make it onto their client's faces. So, it's no surprise we keep a close eye on the backstage kit of the artists who work on our woman&home photoshoots.

And we've got quite the tip-off from our August issue cover shoot, featuring presenting royalty Alex Jones in a 'sunny and warm and lovely' makeup look created by MUA Liz Beckett. Not only has Beckett exclusively shared the insider tricks she used on Alex on the day, she's also revealed an 'amazing' drugstore concealer, picked up for just £4.

Chatting to woman&home behind the scenes of our August issue cover photoshoot, Beckett explained, "This is a bargain from Amazon, which I found. It's a tiny little concealer, it's about £4."

Holding the concealer up to the camera, she praises its "amazing, amazing coverage," and goes on to share her application tip, saying, "I always use a sponge to really buff it in. It's great for the darker bits under your eyes, freckles, or just anywhere that you want to correct; it's a really great palette."

And the professional insights didn't stop there. Another key component of Jones' wide-awake and fresh eye look is her lifted lashes - and Beckett shared the exact product and technique you need to achieve them.

"My absolute top item for Alex is eyelash curlers, and these are from Trish McEvoy," she explains. "I always curl her lashes before mascara, and I curl them again afterwards to really get them up. You have to be very careful when you curl afterwards because you don't want to take the lashes out."

This double curling trick is an amazing way to achieve maximum possible lift and flutter, especially if you have straight or short eyelashes naturally; however, as Beckett says, it's important to proceed with caution.

Don't go in while the mascara is still totally wet; give it a moment to partially dry so it's still flexible but not so sticky that your lashes adhere to the curler. Clamp gently and quickly, and if you feel a lash sticking to the pads, leave the curler closed and 'blink' your eye a few times to gently release them before slowly opening the curler back up.

For all the feel-good benefits of bright summer days, there’s one beauty dilemma that never seems to go away – how to stop sunglasses ruining your makeup.

It's the same old summer tale: you meticulously apply your makeup in the morning (primer and all), only to slip on your sunglasses and discover, an hour later, two tell-tale foundation marks either side of your nose. Frustrating? Absolutely. Preventable? According to beauty experts, quite possibly.

"When the temperatures rise, it can feel like there's an extra layer of maintenance," says Annabelle Taurua, beauty expert at Fresha. "From carrying a fan to blotting paper, sunglasses or a sun hat, keeping your makeup in check over summer can feel like a full-time job."

The good news, she adds, is that "summer makeup doesn't have to be about striving for perfection" – instead, a few simple adaptations can help your routine (and the accessories that come with it) work with the heat, rather than against it.

1. Create a barrier with loose powder

If your best lightweight foundation always transfers onto your sunglasses, a little strategic powder could help. Rather than dusting it all over your face, Taurua recommends concentrating on the areas where your sunglasses make contact with your skin.

"Applying a small amount of loose setting powder can be a simple trick to stop this from happening," she says. "Apply it to the bridge of your nose and the inner frame of your glasses. This creates a barrier, absorbs excess oil and stops makeup transfer."

For best results, use a powder puff or beauty sponge to gently press the powder into the skin, rather than sweeping it on with a brush. Taurua also recommends spritzing your setting spray onto skin before applying powder to create an even longer-lasting finish.

2. Give your sunglasses a quick clean

Your makeup might not be the only culprit. Throughout the day, your sunglasses naturally collect oil, skincare residue and sweat, all of which can transfer back onto freshly applied makeup the next time you wear them.

"It's also important to clean your sunglasses before every use, as oil from your skin can easily transfer and can break down makeup and cause further marks on your skin," says Taurua. "Salt and sand, depending on your location, can also be an added irritant."

A quick wipe of the nose pads and inner frames with anti-bac before you head out can help minimise makeup transfer, while also keeping your sunglasses more hygienic during the warmer months.

3. Check the fit of your frames

If you constantly find yourself pushing your sunglasses back up your nose, the issue may have less to do with your makeup and more to do with the fit of your frames. The more movement and pressure there is, the more likely your foundation is to shift.

"Well-fitting sunglasses can also make a big difference," Taurua explains. "If the pads fit too tightly, they'll press into your face and make it feel uncomfortable. The same applies if you find yourself pushing your glasses up frequently."

The good news is that you don't necessarily need a new pair. Most opticians can adjust the fit of your sunglasses, even if you didn't buy them there, helping them sit more comfortably – and with a little less disruption to your base.

Cat Deeley has become one of our favourite celebrity beauty influences. Her makeup choices rarely miss, and Charlotte Tilbury is one brand that crops up time and time again. When she recently gave followers a glimpse inside her pre-show beauty routine, we were very keen to see which products made the cut.

Before heading on air, Deeley shared her This Morning makeup routine on Instagram, revealing the three products she relies on for quick touch-ups: a compact powder, her favourite Ruby Hammer makeup brush and a nourishing lip oil. It's proof that a few strategic touch-ups are often all that's needed to keep makeup looking fresh.

With soaring temperatures making shine one of summer's biggest beauty concerns, it's a routine that's well worth taking note of. Her pared-back approach is also very much in keeping with this season's trending summer makeup looks – think softly blurred skin, lightweight textures and glossy lips that look healthy and hydrated.

First up was Charlotte Tilbury's cult Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder, which Deeley buffed on using a Ruby Hammer brush. Loved for its finely milled texture, the pressed powder (and one of the best setting powders we've tried) is designed to blur the appearance of pores, minimise shine and set makeup without leaving skin looking flat or chalky - exactly what you want when temperatures start to climb.

Deeley concentrates the powder across her chin and T-zone, areas that are naturally more prone to midday shine. And if you didn't already know, Charlotte Tilbury's best-selling powder is also available in a handbag-friendly mini – the very version Deeley appears to be using – making it ideal for quick touch-ups on the go.

To finish, Deeley reached for Charlotte Tilbury's Unreal Lips Healthy Glow Nectar Oil in what appears to be the shade Pure Peach, adding a juicy wash of colour that complements the rest of her fresh, radiant makeup. Offering the nourishing feel of a balm with the glossy finish of a lip gloss, a lip oil is a great alternative to a heavier lipstick during the summer months.

Wondering the best way to apply a loose powder? Cat uses the Ruby Hammer Face Brush, describing it as her "favourite". The compact makeup brush features soft synthetic bristles that diffuse powder seamlessly, while its travel-sized design (complete with a velvet pouch) makes it another smart addition to any summer makeup bag.

When your best foundation starts melting into fine lines or losing its glow by lunchtime - which it's particularly prone to doing during sticky summer months - it's tempting to start searching for a new formula. But before you rush to replace it, know that the secret to a fresher-looking base may have less to do with what's in the bottle and more to do with how you're applying it.

As skin matures, it naturally becomes drier and less elastic, which can make makeup appear heavier or more textured than intended. That's why makeup artists often place just as much emphasis on application techniques as they do product choice when creating a seamless, skin-like finish.

According to Carolina Benita, global makeup artist at CAIA Cosmetics, one simple trick can make all the difference: lightly misting your foundation brush with your best setting spray before applying cream complexion products.

"I love spraying makeup brushes with a setting spray before applying cream products," says Benita. "This helps everything blend more evenly, creates a more skin-like finish and gives the complexion a fresh, radiant look."

While it may sound like an unnecessary extra step, there is logic behind the technique. The added hydration helps the best foundations for mature skin spread more seamlessly across the skin, reducing the risk of it clinging to dry areas or sitting heavily on the surface.

It's also a useful trick for anyone who prefers a lighter, more natural-looking base. Rather than masking the skin, the technique helps complexion products melt in more effortlessly, creating the sort of healthy finish many of us are aiming for. "When it comes to mature skin, makeup should move with the skin and feel comfortable throughout the day," Benita adds.

How to stop foundation creasing into fine lines

Application is only part of the equation, however. Benita also recommends being mindful of how much product you're applying in areas where makeup naturally creases. “Avoid using too much product in areas where creasing naturally occurs," she advises. “Apply thin layers and build only where necessary.”

Setting powder is another area where less can often be more. While many of us are used to setting the entire face, Benita suggests taking a more targeted approach instead. “I would also be mindful with powder and use it strategically rather than all over the face,” she says. Focus on the T-zone and areas prone to shine.

To finish, reach for a hydrating setting spray. "Finishing with a hydrating setting spray helps melt the makeup into the skin and creates a seamless, long-lasting finish that looks fresh instead of dry," Benita explains.

The takeaway? If your foundation has started behaving badly or looking heavier than you'd like, don't replace it just yet. Instead, give these small tweaks a try, as it may be all that’s needed to achieve a more radiant-looking base.

Sometimes there's a disconnect between what our brain rationally understands, based on the information we've been given, and what our body feels is true.

Example: stepping onto a clear observation deck at the top of a skyscraper. Your brain says, This is perfectly safe, engineered by the world's finest, trodden on by thousands before you. Your legs say, absolutely not.

In beauty, colour correctors fall foul of this because, yes, the colour theory makes sense (hues opposite each other on the colour wheel neutralise each other), but it still feels counterintuitive to smear minty green or lavender stuff on your face to achieve a natural makeup look. If you're hesitant, I've found a product that might give you the confidence to reconsider. Take my hand and step out, I think you'll enjoy the view.

Why this redness correcting powder is my beauty buy of the week

I'll admit this is written with the zeal of the convert. Despite having a pale/pink complexion and being told by several dermatologists that I have mild rosacea, I've historically shied away from green creams, and dialled down redness with concealer and my best lightweight foundation instead.

It makes no sense - willingly ignoring an entire product category designed for my exact skin type. So when Laura Mercier sent over their brilliant translucent setting powder (a product I love and use all the time) in a new, spearminty hue, I decided the time had come for a correction.

Whether you have rosacea or just get a bit flushed and shiny after a glass of champagne (guilty on both counts), this workhorse is a godsend for summer occasions like weddings or a day at the races.

You know what they say, every day is a school day. Well, I've just discovered all the chicest people in Sweden rave about this one beauty brand – and it's just landed on UK shores.

If you haven't already been introduced, CAIA Cosmetics is the Scandi beauty brand behind some of the best lightweight foundations, the best blushers and their famous under-eye brightening colour corrector. While I wasn't the most familiar with CAIA, after a recent trip to Stockholm, I realised almost everyone in Sweden is wearing this beauty brand's products on a daily basis.

So, with it being my job to write about all things beauty, it was only natural that I took a trip to their flagship store to do some investigating and try the products for myself, of course. I got the opportunity to quiz several of the CAIA team members on the history of the brand, their bestselling products and even their personal recommendations, here's everything I found out – and the buys I stuffed into my luggage to bring home.

Introducing, the Scandi beauty brand that everyone in Sweden raves about

If you're like me, you might've seen ads for CAIA Cosmetics via social media, specifically the impressive before-and-after videos of the Wake Me Up Cream. However, I never quite gave the brand the time of day to do more research into it – wrong move from the get-go, trust me.

Katie Holmes has spent the past two decades perfecting the art of looking effortless. Whether she's sparking a waiting list for *that* Khaite cashmere bra, stepping out in relaxed tailoring or making wide-leg jeans look impossibly chic, the actor has a knack for creating simple outfit formulas that never appear too try-hard.

The same can be said of her beauty look. Holmes has long favoured softly tousled hair, glowing skin and makeup that feels more incidental than meticulously applied. It may then come as a surprise to learn that the actress doesn't consider herself particularly skilled when it comes to makeup. "In daily life, I do very minimal makeup because I don't feel that confident in my ability to apply it," she recently admitted.

Sharing her everyday beauty routine in an Instagram video with Merit Beauty, the Dawson’s Creek alum talks viewers through the products she reaches for most often and the lessons she’s learnt from her makeup artist over the years. Among them was a simple blush placement tip that she credits with creating a foolproof, natural-looking flush.

"Hi, I'm Katie Holmes, and I'm here to do my makeup with you," the actress begins in the video, before admitting that her approach to beauty is intentionally low-key. "In daily life, I do very minimal makeup because I don't feel that confident in my ability to put on makeup," she says. "Also, I'm a 90s kid – that was cool back then and I guess I still think it's the 90s."

Reflecting on how beauty trends inevitably come full circle, she says: “I feel like I wore a darker lip to prom and then there were many years of the nude lip,” she says. “Now that it's come back around, you're really seeing at a certain point in your life how everything is cyclical.” We couldn't agree more - and as long as the trends are as effortlessly flattering as these, we're happy to see them return time and time again.

It feels as though we've put our brows through every trend imaginable over the past decade. From big and blocky to overtly brushed-up, we've experimented with countless eyebrow shapes and finishes.

Yet the one timeless look is a naturally full and fluffy finish. Especially flattering for mature brows, soft definition and a little structure can help lift the face and create a more youthful appearance.

According to Samina Kousar, head trainer at Blink Brow Bar, the key to achieving flattering brows in later life lies in enhancing what's already there, rather than chasing dramatic reshaping. “Mature brows benefit most from a subtle, restorative approach rather than dramatic change. It’s about adding softness, gentle structure and lift without overpowering the face.”

An expert's guide to shaping mature brows for a lifted look

As we age, brows often become thinner and less dense. Texture can shift, too, with strands becoming coarse and more difficult to tame. The good news? With a few strategic tweaks and some clever product placement, brows of every shape and size can appear fuller and more defined again. Here’s how…

Tip #1: Consider professional brow mapping

Brows have the power to completely transform the look of your face, which is why it's so important to nail the shape. Brow mapping is a professional technique used to determine the most flattering brow shape for your individual features, taking into account where the brow should begin, arch and end.

According to Samina, it's particularly beneficial for mature brows, as "thinning brows can contribute to an aged appearance, but precise brow mapping can restore balance and lift". Rather than dramatically altering the natural shape, the focus should be on subtle refinement: cleaning up stray hairs and maintaining a softly lifted tail to enhance the eye area.

Tip #2: Try a brow tint

If your brows have started to turn grey, an eyebrow pencil alone may not be enough to create the appearance of fullness. Instead, consider a longer-lasting solution such as a brow tint. "As brows turn grey, they often lose visibility," explains Samina. "Professional tinting is an effective way to restore depth and fullness. It not only covers grey hairs but also lightly stains the skin beneath sparse areas for a fuller effect."

The trick here is choosing the right shade. Going too dark can look harsh and unnatural. "Soft, warm-toned browns or taupe shades create the most natural and flattering result," says Samina. For an at-home alternative, she recommends a tinted gel such as Blink Brow Bar's Tinted Brow Gel, which is "ideal for controlling coarse or grey hairs without adding heavy colour." Tip #3: Embrace a fluffy finish

Rather than trimming the tops of the brows, which can square off the shape and create a harsh line, focus on enhancing the hairs you already have. This can be achieved with a strong-hold brow wax or gel, or via an in-salon treatment such as brow lamination. Samina recommends the latter, noting that "with age, brow hairs can become wiry and grow in irregular directions. Lamination smooths and restructures these hairs, allowing them to be repositioned into a fuller, more uniform shape that lasts for several weeks."

For those who prefer to style their brows at home, there are plenty of products with impressive staying power. While brow gels, pencils and tints can work wonders, they can only do so much if your brows have become significantly sparse. In these instances, a semi-permanent treatment such as microblading or microfeathering may be worth considering. "For brows that have significantly thinned or stopped growing, microblading can be transformative," says Samina. "Fine, hair-like strokes of pigment mimic natural hairs, restoring density and shape. This provides a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution, reducing the need for daily makeup."

If mimicking a natural-toned flush makes pink your go-to shade for blusher, the idea of swapping a rosy hue for a bold orange-red on your cheeks may not sound quite as appealing. But I’m arguing for a rethink.

Not only is this zesty colour incredibly versatile as it covers a beautiful spectrum of shades, but it’s also by far the best blusher for being a universally flattering brightener across all skin tones. Think soft sunset rather than a fruit bowl.

Beyond complexion-perking benefits, as a colour linked to energy, warmth and optimism, orange is also known to have a mood-boosting effect – making it perfect for this time of year, when we’re fully embracing the sunnier months. What's the theory behind red-orange blush?

“In colour theory, reddy orange cancels out sallowness,” explains makeup artist Daniel Sandler, one of the OG champions of orange blusher, thanks to his award-winning Watercolour liquid versions. “The red restores vital life to a dull complexion, whilst orange gently adds a fresh glow. Combined, this sunset shade restores warmth instantly, making the complexion appear healthier, brighter and more radiant.”

Makeup artist Sarah Jane Froom, who has painted famous faces from Alexa Chung to Naomi Campbell, agrees that this is the ideal time of year to turn to orangey shades. “Sunset-toned blush is one of the easiest ways to bring life back into skin,” she says. “I always reach for richer, red-based oranges at this time of year because they mimic a natural flush and instantly illuminate the face. Even better, it’s a mood-boosting colour, so you look good, feel brighter and carry that energy with you.”

How the pros apply sunset blush

There are no hard and fast rules about how or where you wear sunset blusher. It’s adaptable, so dial up the intensity or tweak the placement to your liking. “Sunset orange is less about making a statement and more about restoring radiance to the complexion,” instructs Froom. “It should melt into the skin and look like natural warmth rather than noticeably sitting on the surface."

She explains: "First, apply to the apples of the cheeks to bring freshness to the face, then blend upwards along cheekbones towards the temples to create lift. If you want a more sun-kissed effect, lightly sweep what’s left across the bridge of the nose. The key is to keep the texture light and the edges soft.” On days when you fancy a more contoured look, simply sweep the brush under the cheekbones as well, adds Sandler.

Why sunset blush works for everyone

As the spectrum of orangey shades can cross from cooler to warmer undertones via neutrals that sit happily in the middle, there’s a version for every complexion. “What makes these tones so versatile is the balance of red and yellow undertones,” enthuses Froom. “They don’t sit flat on the skin like cooler pinks can, but instead create a healthy, energising effect that works across all skin tones when you choose the depth correctly.”

With sunset shades in particular, Sandler drills down further. “The mix of red, orange and brown undertones adapts naturally to any complexion,” he explains. “Red mimics a flush, orange adds brightness, and brown provides depth, creating a soft, flattering glow from pale to deep skin.”

How to find your perfect sunset blusher

“When I’m choosing a shade, I always tailor it to the skin tone,” says Froom. “For pale skin, softer apricot and peach tones are most flattering. On medium and olive skin tones, I move into truer corals and warm oranges to add a richer, more defined warmth while still looking refined and skin-like. For deeper skin tones, I recommend stronger red-orange or terracotta hues. These shades bring out the richness in skin and create a radiant finish.”

This easy versatility stretches to texture, too. “If you want a sheer, natural, long-lasting finish, try silicone-based liquid textures,” suggests Sandler. “If you prefer slightly denser formulas, opt for creams, but make sure they dry down properly so the colour doesn’t slide. Only choose a pressed powder if you prefer a very matte finish, but be wary of making skin look flat.”

Have you ever noticed that your makeup turns out differently when you’re on holiday and staying in a hotel? Or after applying it at a friend’s house, rather than your own home? You’re not imagining things: the environment in which we put on our foundation, blusher and mascara can impact their final results.

Your look can vary due to lighting, humidity and even wall colour, meaning the room in which you choose to apply makeup – even within the same home – can make all the difference, or lead to makeup mistakes. “Your makeup can look completely different depending on the room you apply it in,” confirms Danielle Louise, Fresha’s beauty expert.

“A lot of mistakes are not actually about skill; they’re about the environment. You can be using great products and applying them well, but if the lighting is wrong, it’s much harder to judge what the makeup really looks like.”

What are the best rooms to apply makeup in?

So, which lighting should you opt for to get the perfectly blended base and best bronzer placement? I spoke to two makeup experts to share their top tips.

1. Bedrooms (or bathrooms) with natural lighting

These rooms tend to have the best natural lighting and pared-back décor. And if you’re lucky enough to have a separate dressing room, make sure you set things up near a window. “Natural light gives you the most accurate view of your skin and your makeup," explains Louise. "It helps you see where foundation needs blending, if bronzer looks too warm, if blush placement is balanced and whether or not concealer is actually seamless. If you can sit facing a window, that’s usually ideal."

Opinions differ over whether or not the bathroom is an ideal choice (more on this later), but it all depends on the placement of your bathroom (is it east-facing for morning time light?) and if you have windows and good mirrors in there. For celebrity makeup artist and Co-Founding Partner of Product Society, Mezhgan Hussainy, the following elements all line up.

"For my day-to-day glam, I prioritise a room that has a mixture of natural light coming in with some artificial light. For me, that’s my bathroom," she tells me. “I have windows which bring in sunlight that reflects off the neutral tones of the room, helping to bounce ambient, neutral lighting. I know if I do my glam in that environment, my look will carry through any of the rooms I will be in throughout the day.”

2. Any other room with soft, evenly distributed lighting

Although bedrooms and bathrooms are commonly chosen for makeup application, that certainly isn’t to say that other rooms in your house should be avoided. Any room with natural lighting (or a mix of natural and some artificial) and simple, neutral walls (think: living room, dining room, etc) can work.

However, if you struggle with natural lighting in your home, Louise comments that the second-best option is any room that has soft, evenly distributed lighting instead. This light, she says, should be “ideally positioned around the face rather than directly above it.” And if you really need to use majority artificial lighting, if possible, opt for a room with white lighting that mimics daylight, rather than anything too yellow-toned or warm.

What are the worst rooms to apply makeup in?

“Sometimes changing rooms makes more difference than changing your routine,” advises Louise. This clearly matters – so here’s what rooms to avoid to get the best outcome from the get-go.

1. Artificially-lit bathrooms

Bathrooms are very hit-and-miss. If you have a beautifully-lit space like Hussainy, your makeup will look beautiful. It’s also pretty convenient to do your makeup here in the morning, as it's where a large part of getting ready for the day often takes place. However, while bathrooms can sometimes be the best choice, in certain homes they’ll be the worst – particularly if you don’t have any windows and, instead, any lighting is all artificial and pretty overpowering.

“A lot of people do their makeup in the bathroom because it feels practical, but bathroom lighting is often far too harsh, too dim or badly placed,” says Louise. “That can lead to over-blending, under-blending, using too much product or choosing the wrong shade entirely.”

She adds that, in particular, yellow-toned lights can be counterintuitive for flawless makeup application. And if they’re overhead lights, you may be in even more trouble. “Bathroom lighting tends to cast shadows in all the wrong places. Overhead lights can make under-eyes look darker, skin texture look more pronounced, and foundation appear more blended than it really is. Then you step outside and suddenly see streaks, patchiness or a shade mismatch.”

But lighting isn’t the only thing you have to worry about. If you choose to do your makeup in the bathroom, be sure to leave plenty of time between showering and application. “If the room is warm or steamy from a shower, that can affect how products sit on the skin, too," Louise notes. "Makeup may start slipping, separating or applying unevenly before you’ve even left the house.”

2. Rooms with coloured walls

Hussainy says that you should always take note of the colour of the walls in the room where you’re about to do makeup. Surprisingly, they can impact your results more than you’d think. “I would avoid doing your makeup in any room with paint colours that affect the outcome of your overall look,” she begins. “For example, rooms with deep red or blue tones on the walls will change how you see tones as you are applying your makeup.”

Similarly, Louise adds that anything pink, yellow or grey-toned can “subtly reflect colour onto the skin and throw off your makeup judgement.” Instead, suggests Hussainy, try “embracing a space with neutral wall colours and ambient lighting.”

3. Dark rooms or those with very warm lighting

As mentioned, anything with very warm, yellow-toned lighting from artificial overheads or lamps isn’t ideal. The main issue this can cause is for your foundation, which can look darker or more golden-toned, meaning shade mismatches and a lack of effective blending.

Equally, dark rooms aren’t going to do you any favours. This may sound obvious, but even a room that’s only moderately lit can cause problems, creating unwanted shadow and a real muted ‘flatness’. Any room that’s too dark can “cause people to apply too much concealer, bronzer or blush because features are harder to see clearly,” says Louise.

Regardless of the specific room you choose, as long as you have some natural light, fairly bare, neutral walls, and clear air that's unaffected by shower steam and heat, your makeup will likely be a hit.

Celebrity makeup artist Hannah Martin has spent more than two decades painting the faces of some of the world’s most recognisable women, from supermodels to royalty. Renowned for creating glowing yet natural-looking skin for her A-list clientele, Martin recently revealed the unexpected secret behind her signature makeup finish.

Speaking at a Clinique press event, Martin shared that her “very dry, slightly wrinkly hands” are an “absolute blessing” when it comes to makeup application. She explained that she was originally trained by a makeup artist with similarly dry hands and has since found that drier skin can offer more control when blending complexion products with the fingers.

“If you have oily palms or secrete a bit of sweat through your palms or your fingers, you're probably not the kind of person to be able to do much makeup with your fingers. But my dry old lady hands are perfect.”

Why dry hands can help with makeup application

Makeup brushes and beauty sponges will always have a place in our routines. But it’s true that finger application has long been favoured by artists looking to create a softer, more skin-like finish. According to experts, the warmth from your hands can help cream and liquid products melt more seamlessly into the complexion, particularly when working with lighter base formulas such as skin tints, cream blushes and balmy concealers.

Martin’s not alone in her preference for finger application. Legendary makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin famously used his hands to press and melt products into the skin for a seamless finish, while celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin – best known for creating Meghan Markle’s wedding makeup – has previously said he rarely uses a sponge for foundation, preferring fingers for a more natural effect.

Dry hands may also offer slightly more grip and control when pressing products into the skin, especially compared to oilier fingertips, which can sometimes cause makeup to slip or separate during application. As Martin flags, finger application won’t work for everyone – and the best tool often depends on both your skin type and the formula itself. Those with oily palms or sweaty fingertips may find that brushes or damp beauty sponges offer a smoother, more even result, particularly when applying full-coverage foundations.

Cream-based and hydrating formulas tend to work especially well when applied with the fingers. Products such as lightweight foundations and cream blushes can benefit from being gently pressed into the skin rather than buffed heavily across the face. Many makeup artists also recommend using fingertips around areas where makeup is more prone to creasing, such as under the eyes or around the nose, as the lighter pressure can help deliver a fresher-looking finish.

A smoky eye is right up there with a red lip as classic special occasion makeup. But while it's certain to make an impact, many of us shy away from trying smoky eye looks for fear of it looking and feeling heavy, or overdone.

Enter: Anita Rani. The broadcaster and author stepped out on the 2026 TV BAFTAs red carpet with a glamorous eye look that felt like a departure from her signature pared-back winged eyeliner.

The smoky eye makeup perfectly complemented Rani's embellished Bora Aksu gown and slicked back hairstyle - and, crucially, had a modern finish that felt anything but 'too much'. So, how was it achieved? After investigating, we've spotted a classic makeup artist's trick at play that anyone who wants to try a smoky eye should know about.

Why Anita Rani's smoky eye looks so chic and effortless

Let's cut straight to the chase: On close inspection of Rani's stunning TV BAFTA eye makeup, created by makeup artist Sarah Jane Wai, we spotted one key element that changed everything. Alongside sooty black liner and lashings of mascara the eyeshadow shade used to create the look appeared to be a muted, deep, dusky rose that reflected the shade of Rani's lipstick.

The shadow was washed over the lid, subtly winged out alongside Rani's eyeliner and smudged ever so slightly under the eye too. There's a lot to be said for finding your signature look and sticking with it. Wouldn't you be disappointed if Claudia Winkleman stopped self-tanning or Brian May got a buzzcut?

My 'thing' is black winged eyeliner. Not every day, but definitely for every night out. It was initially inspired by the late, great Amy Winehouse when a bout of university heartbreak overlapped with the release of Back to Black (heaven) Decades later, my feline flick's still here and is the only way I feel truly done and - real talk - hot for parties.

So what's the issue? There isn't one, really. Anyone who says black liner is too harsh for 40+ eyes should refer to the immaculate Dita Von Teese or Angelina 'smokeshow' Jolie. I am, however, a believer in continuous reassessment. Standing back halfway through trimming the hedge and thinking, "does this still look good?" Plus, it is a requirement of my job to not stick with the same old makeup, so I gave something else a whirl.

Why this transfer-proof liner is my beauty buy of the week

Essentially, I had a holiday fling with Stila Stay All Day Inkwear because packing a shimmery bronze liner, instead of my usual dead flat black, simply felt correct for two weeks in Thailand.

Yes, I swapped my signature black liquid liner for... bronze liquid eyeliner. Feel free to eye roll. But as anyone with a decades-long dependance on a very specific look will understand, this did feel like a brave departure.

Some tips: Ensure the brush is really well loaded for non-draggy application. Be brave - more is more for smooth lines. You have to let it dry properly, especially if you have hooded eyes like me, so tilt your chin up for a good few minutes. But once it's on, it is on. So very on, in fact, that if transferring isn't usually a problem for you, this might be a bit too tattoo-like to be the best eyeliner for you.

But, if you are smudge-prone and dream of a flattering, spicy-looking eyeliner that reliably stays where you put it, this is it. And an oil-based makeup remover will take care of business when you want it off. Although, should you fall into bed without removing it (ahem), you will wake up with still-perfect, showerproof feline flicks already in situ, so you can do what you like with that information. Recently, I noticed something seemed different with my makeup. Even the best lightweight foundations, which once made my skin look fresh, now slipped into lines by mid-morning. Concealer creased, blush vanished, and everything felt a little… off. I'd put it down to bad makeup until I realised it was my skin that had changed, but my routine hadn’t kept up with it.

After the age of 40, shifts in the hydration, texture and elasticity of our skin change the way makeup behaves. The old rules of the decades before it no longer seem to apply. But the fix, I've learned, isn't a whole new makeup bag. Instead, it's about better prep, lighter textures and subtly upgraded techniques.

Once I started prioritising skincare as the basis - and stopped expecting makeup to do all the heavy lifting - things looked smoother, fresher and far more like me again. Here are the steps that helped me get there.

Why does some makeup 'stop working' after the age of 40?

When makeup stops behaving, the driving factors are usually happening beneath the surface. According to Maria Xavier-Jackson, Education & Events Manager at bareMinerals, hormonal and structural skin changes play a major role. “After the age of 40, most women experience a significant loss of collagen,” she explains. “Skin can become drier, less elastic and more sensitive, often with deeper-set lines and some barrier disruption. Makeup that once worked suddenly exaggerates these changes.”

This is why familiar foundations can start clinging, concealer creases faster and texture isn't disguised as easily as before. And while the knee-jerk response is to add more coverage, this often makes those things more noticeable.

1. What you use before makeup matters

If makeup consistently gathers in fine lines, prep – not product – is usually the issue. “Skin prep and priming are key to stopping makeup from settling into fine lines,” says Cult Beauty makeup artist Kimi. “Use a primer that suits both your skin type and your foundation formula. I’d also avoid heavy powder in colder months – spot-concealing areas of concern works better than setting the entire face.”

Maria agrees, stressing that over-layering skincare is a common mistake. “Too many products underneath makeup can cause slipping and pilling,” she explains. “In the morning, focus on cleansing, hydration and protection – that’s it.”

Apply the best vitamin C serum for brightness, a moisturiser that supports the skin barrier, and SPF to create a smoother canvas without overwhelming the skin. Fast-absorbing textures are key; skin should feel comfortable and plump, not tacky or overloaded.

2. Using foundation formulas that suit mature skin

In terms of the best foundation for mature skin, well-hydrated skin almost always looks more "youthful" than skin that’s heavily covered. “Using heavy foundations and concealers in an effort to hide imperfections is one of the biggest causes of pilling, creasing and flatness,” says Maria. “The lighter and more weightless the formula, the less likely it is to settle into lines.”

Hydrating liquids, serum foundations and skin tints tend to move with the skin rather than sit on top of it. Clarins has cleverly merged its cult serum with foundation – aptly named Double Serum Foundation – to create a skincare-makeup hybrid that gives flexible coverage alongside a healthy, bouncy glow. Meanwhile, bareMinerals Complexion Rescue is now available as Luminous Skin Tint Stick, which glide onto skin with ease, leaving a light, healthy glow while covering up my skincare niggles.

These more radiant finishes help bounce light back onto areas where volume has naturally diminished. If you are attached to fuller coverage, though, try mixing a pin-drop of hydrating serum into your foundation. It sheers the texture slightly and gives skin a more natural sheen, rather than a one-dimensional finish that can feel ageing.

3. Addressed concealer creasing under eyes

This is where many women unknowingly sabotage themselves. Thick layers of concealer might neutralise the look of dark circles at first, but this is almost guaranteed to crease later. When trying to find the right concealer, three things really matter: coverage, flexibility and shade range.

I’ve tried more formulas than I can count, but my current favourite by a mile is NYX Professional Makeup Bare With Me Serum Concealer. Its serum-like texture blurs uneven under-eye texture and disguises darkness without exaggeration or cakiness.

Another approach worth considering is colour correcting. As Kimi explained to me: “For lighter skin tones, use a peach corrector; for deeper tones, use orange to cancel blue or purple circles. It may seem tedious, but it really reduces how much concealer you need, which helps prevent makeup settling into fine lines.”

Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Vanish Colour Corrector is another current favourite of mine. Using less product overall is one of the most effective ways to keep the under-eye area looking smoother and brighter, particularly as skin becomes thinner with age.

4. Choosing the right blush formula – and placement

If there’s one product that instantly improves how skin looks after 40, it’s blusher – but both the chosen formula and placement matter. Powder blush can catch on texture, which is why creams and liquids tend to look fresher and more skin-like.

Pixi’s On-The-Glow Blush is an excellent tinted moisture stick that adds an easy burst of freshness; it’s always in my handbag..

Application matters just as much as formula. Always tap – don’t swipe – colour onto the upper cheekbone rather than directly on the apples, which can pull the face downwards. Shade also becomes more important with age. Though of course your skin tone and undertone play a big role, very cool pinks or deep plums can look more harsh as our undertones shift, while neutral roses and soft corals tend to lift the complexion without looking obvious.

“If your blush keeps lifting your foundation, it’s not you – it’s technique,” says Kimi. “Apply blush over tacky, not wet foundation and tap rather than swipe. If it still won’t sit properly, it usually comes down to uneven skincare layering.”

5. Adapting eye makeup for hooded and ageing eyes

Eye makeup often needs the biggest adjustment in midlife. Heavier textures crease faster on hooded lids, while thick layers can make eyes look smaller rather than more defined. Cream eyeshadows with soft satin finishes tend to be more forgiving than powders, especially when pressed in with fingertips.

Eyeshadow sticks have become my best friend for their fool-proof application and zero fallout. Ilia Beauty Eye Stylus Shadow Sticks come in a wide range of flattering shades that add definition without much effort.

“Keep depth close to the lash line and avoid overly dark shades through the crease, which can emphasise heaviness,” says Kimi. Brows also do more heavy lifting than eyeshadow after 40. A softly defined brow frames the face and lifts the eye area far more effectively than piling on product.

I like Benefit’s Gimme Brow Volumising Fibre Gel, which fills sparse areas and keeps arches softly groomed all day.

Finding the right eyeshadow shade to enhance your natural eye colour is one of the oldest tricks in the makeup artist handbook – and it all comes down to colour theory.

According to the colour wheel, the shades that sit opposite your eye colour are the ones most likely to make them stand out. For anyone searching for the most flattering eyeshadow for blue eyes, that means leaning towards orange-toned hues. Thankfully, that doesn’t have to translate to anything bright or brash; instead, think warm bronze, soft rust, peach and coral tones that subtly make blue eyes pop.

Putting colour theory into practise, legendary makeup artist Gucci Westman pulled from a palette of warm tones to create Nicole Kidman’s Met Gala 2026 makeup, including a striking eyeshadow look. The goal was to make the actress’s blue eyes even more vivid, while still maintaining a soft-textured, feminine finish and radiant base that feels especially flattering on mature skin. Ahead, Westman breaks down the full look and the exact products she used.

Why Gucci Westman chose warm bronze tones for Nicole Kidman’s blue eyes

For this year’s Met Gala, Kidman paired a dramatic red sequin Chanel gown with makeup that felt noticeably softer and more understated – a contrast that Westman says was entirely intentional. “Nicole’s dress was just exquisite,” the makeup artist explains. “For me, it was about honouring that same level of beauty through her skin, focusing on the radiance, brightness and tones, and bringing out her lips, skin and eyes in a way that feels true to her natural tonality.”

Rather than opting for anything overly smoky or graphic, Westman used warm peachy-bronze tones from the Clé de Peau Beauté Eye Color Quad in Warm Ocean Sunset, keeping the shades “slightly rusty” to intensify Kidman’s blue eyes without overwhelming them.

Soft brown eyeliner along the lower lashes and a subtle flick close to the lash line created definition without the harshness that black liner can sometimes bring to mature lids, while a couple of coats of Perfect Lash Mascara added subtle separation and lift. “Everything is softly blended,” says Westman, who describes the overall look as having a subtle “70s feeling inspired by Jane Birkin’s effortless femininity”.

Texture also played a key role in keeping the makeup looking fresh and luminous under the bright lights of the red carpet. “I love layering, mixing creams and powders, then pressing a bit of cream back on top to bring back that fresh radiance,” Westman explains.

A pretty flushed cheek (courtesy of the Powder Blush Duo in Peach Tulip) complemented Kidman’s nude-pink lip combination of Lipstick Matte in Exuberant and Pink Petunia. “I also added a few soft freckles for a sense of youthfulness,” adds Westman. Together, the warm tones and diffused finishes created what Westman describes as a “natural fluidity” between the skin, cheeks, lips and eyes.

Our skin changes as we age, so it’s only natural that our makeup routine should evolve too.

The full-coverage foundation that once sat so seamlessly on your skin, you may now find clings to dry patches, settles into expression lines, or leaves it looking flat rather than radiant. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with the formulas you’ve always loved, but often it’s the application techniques (alongside a few strategic product swaps) that make the biggest difference on mature skin.

As Aimee Connolly, makeup artist and founder of Sculpted by Aimee, tells us: “Certain products will help distract from texture and give skin a fresher finish.” Visible texture is one of the most common concerns when applying foundation to mature skin, along with creasing, dryness and cakiness. Ahead, Connolly shares her top three tips for achieving a smoother, more radiant base.

Tip 1: Don’t underestimate the power of skin prep

The skin’s ability to retain moisture diminishes with age, leading to increased dryness and more visible texture. That’s why, according to Connolly, hydration should be the focus before makeup touches the skin. “You really want to bring bounce and plumpness back into the complexion,” she explains. “That can come from your skincare prep, or from using a moisturising primer underneath foundation.”

Start with one of the best hyaluronic acid serums before applying your face moisturiser – ideally one formulated with humectants and barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides. “Hydrating skincare helps soften the appearance of texture and dryness, creating a smoother canvas for makeup application,” says Connolly. Allow enough time for each layer to absorb fully, as rushing this step can lead to pilling, slipping and separation later in the day.

“I would never underestimate the power of the products you use underneath foundation and how that affects the way makeup sits on the skin,” she adds. When it comes to foundation itself, Connolly recommends steering away from formulas that feel “overly mattifying or super dry”, as these can emphasise dehydration and leave the complexion looking flat rather than naturally luminous. Instead, look for lightweight foundation that melts seamlessly into the skin and leaves behind a healthy glow.

Tip 2: Swap powder textures for creamier formulas

Flat, matte, powder formulas tend to settle into fine lines and exaggerate dryness – which is why Connolly recommends opting for creamier products.

“You don’t have to choose an oily finish, but something that has a freshness to it is really going to help distract from texture, rather than cling to it,” she explains. Lightweight liquids and tinted moisturisers are your best friend here, as they’ll deliver that real-skin finish.

“You don’t need to take your foundation to the perimeters of the face,” says Connolly. “Focus on the centre and buff it out where needed, allowing your skin to shine through.”

Foundation aside, Connolly also swears by cream blush, saying it “absolutely works” for mature skin, helping to bring warmth and dimension to the face. The key is to apply with a lighter hand and build colour gradually, rather than applying too much product at once.

Another bonus is their versatility. A balmy blush can be tapped onto cheeks, lips and even eyelids for a soft, cohesive makeup look, while the subtle sheen helps give skin a luminous finish – often removing the need for highlighter altogether.

Tip 3: Be targeted with powder

For many of us, setting powder is a non-negotiable step in our makeup routine – but overdoing it can often be the very thing making mature skin look drier and more textured, according to Connolly. “Particularly for an age group who are used to growing up with powder, there’s an allegiance to, ‘My makeup doesn’t last without this, and I need to put it everywhere,’” she explains. “But actually, too much powder will just set down and cause dehydration.”

Instead of dusting powder across the entire face, Connolly recommends taking a more targeted approach – only setting the areas where makeup is most likely to crease or move throughout the day, such as around smile lines or underneath the eyes. Using a small fluffy brush or puff, gently press a minimal amount of product into these areas rather than sweeping it broadly across the skin.

“Choose a more modern formula that’s not going to dry you out,” Connolly advises, recommending finely milled powders that feel lightweight and breathable on the skin rather than overly matte or talc-heavy options. The goal, she says, isn’t to remove every trace of shine, but simply to lock makeup in place while still allowing skin to look radiant.

Those who know me know I'm serious when it comes to my beauty sleep. I'll always choose extra zzz's over more time to get ready in the morning – and I think many people will be able to relate.

This came to fruition a few short weeks ago when I was doing my makeup whilst on the train into work, which made me realise that I only relied on three beauty buys to ensure I was office-ready and presentable.

The 3 makeup buys I use to get ready in 5 minutes

Whether you're sitting at your dressing table with only five minutes until you have to run out of the door or you're doing your makeup whilst on the go, this trio of products is all you need to look put together in a flash. From a budget concealer and a multipurpose blush stick to one of the best lip liners for a creamy application, these formulas have my seal of approval.

Back to my five-minute train routine - I began by applying my concealer with a simple swipe under my eyes to cover my dark circles and spot concealing any redness in my sensitive complexion.

Its formula is super creamy and lightweight yet buildable, which would make it especially suited to mature skin or complexions that are on the drier side, as it doesn't tend to settle into fine lines. And don't get me started on this concealer's amazingly affordable price tag, which is a rarity nowadays.

As for the blush stick, I swept this formula onto the high points of my cheekbones for a lifted effect and a tad on the bridge of my nose for a natural, 'caught-the-sun' look. Then I lined my lips with the lip liner, using it to shade in the edges for a seamlessly blended rosy pout, before tapping a touch of the blush stick into the middle of my lips to complete the look.

Naomi Watts needs little introduction. The British-Australian actress has picked up more than 40 awards across a career defined by iconic roles – from Betty Elms in Mulholland Drive to Ann Darrow in King Kong. Even when you’re short on time, it’s still important to start with skincare – as Watts demonstrates in her video. “I’m going to start by moisturising my skin, making sure I can receive all of these products nicely and I’m hydrated all day long,” she tells her 2.1 million followers, while applying her own Stripes Dew As I Do Hydrating Cream. As well as priming and plumping the skin, a good face moisturiser will allow your base to glide on smoothly.

“Then I’m going to use Monika Blunder’s foundation, and I’m going to add extra moisturiser because that’s what I need at this point in my life,” she continues. Mixing moisturiser with foundation is a brilliant MUA-approved tip to sheer out coverage and get that underlying glow. Watts takes a small, bristle brush to blend the foundation in. Next, she warms up her complexion with a swirl of cream blush in “a nice apricot colour.”

For the finishing touches, brows are brushed up using Jones Road brow gel – just enough to frame the eyes and add structure. A swipe of highlight from Gucci Westman’s Westman Atelier stick brings a soft sheen to the high points of the face, keeping everything looking fresh and dewy.

Finally, she finishes with a lip colour from Sarah Creal, pressing any excess onto her cheeks for a cohesive flush and, as she says, “for a little spring brightness.” This is an easy, editorial trick that ties the whole look together. “And there you go, five minutes and out the door.”

When you're a beauty journalist, every day is a school day. And so on a chilly March morning, I found myself in a fashionably crumbly London townhouse, notepad (ok, iPhone notes app) in hand, mesmerised by Jamie Genevieve's eyebrow masterclass.

In an industry obsessed with TikTok-friendly 'world first' novelty, it's refreshing to see a brand stick to its guns by simply offering excellently-made, useful stuff we all want in our kits. Hence, Vieve is entering the eyebrow category with (drumroll...) a pencil and a clear gel.

"We've started really simple," Genevieve explained, "They are just the best of what these products can offer, then there's a space for innovation with ingredients." And what makes this the best eyebrow pencil and gel exactly? A few things, if you ask me.

Technique-wise, I picked up a gold nugget that morning that I've been deploying on my own arches ever since. "I really like to start eyeliner from the middle of the eye, and when you do something similar with brows, it acts like a lift," Genevieve explained, wielding the Modern Brow Definer. I've been reaching for Collection's Lasting Perfection Concealer for as long as I can remember. It's continuously had a spot in my makeup collection for years on end, so much so that I couldn't even give you a ballpark figure of how many tubes I've been through. So, when the newly designed tube landed on my desk, I knew I was well-equipped to judge it.

I must admit, at first I was sceptical - had the formula inside also changed? However much to my delight, I was greeted with the concealer that we all know and love. It's creamy, buildable and easy to blend, yet doesn't sheer out too much once you do.

Not to mention, its promises of a 16-hour wear time remain tried, tested and true. This is so useful if you have dark circles or pigmentation that you wish to conceal effectively - and not have to top up.

I typically opt for my fingertip or a concealer brush when I'm doing my makeup in front of my stocked dressing table, so I often find designs like this to be slightly gimmicky. With that said, I've surprised myself at how often I've chosen to use the sponge applicator and how many occasions on which this concealer has saved the day.

You’ve heard the saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” which is exactly what sprung to mind when I learnt that Armani had reformulated its beloved Luminous Silk Foundation. Unchanged for over 25 years, the iconic base remains a go-to for makeup artists, beauty editors and celebrities alike – from Martha Stewart to Cate Blanchett and Gemma Chan. Which begs the question: why change it at all?

But Armani isn’t alone. In a similar move, Estée Lauder recently announced a reformulation of its best-selling Double Wear Foundation, signalling a wider shift in the industry. The common thread? A move towards skincare-first formulas that don’t just perfect the look of skin but support it too.

In Armani’s case, the new Luminous Silk now includes glycerin, niacinamide and Mediterranean floral extracts, designed to boost hydration, enhance radiance and improve skin tone over time. There’s also an expanded 44-shade range (with 18 new additions), making it more inclusive than ever. On paper, it all sounds promising, but when a formula reaches icon status, the real question is whether the update enhances it or if the original still holds its ground.

We put the original Luminous Silk Foundation and new version to the test

I’ll admit, I’m someone who approaches reformulations with caution, particularly when it comes to complexion products. When you find a foundation that works for your skin, particularly as it becomes drier or more textured over time, it’s not something you want to lose. So, I tested the original and the reformulated Luminous Silk side-by-side to see how they really compare.

There’s no doubt that Armani’s new Luminous Silk Foundation is one of the best foundations for mature skin. The added hydration and boosted luminosity make it especially well-suited to skin that’s starting to feel drier or look a little less even. That said, the differences between the two aren’t dramatic.

Ultimately, the reformulation feels less like a reinvention and more like a modern update that brings the formula in line with what many of us are looking for now. Think fresher, slightly glowier complexions, with the same lightweight, skin-like finish that made it a classic in the first place.

There’s a moment, somewhere around your forties, when makeup starts to behave differently. Your best foundation that once skimmed over your skin now settles slightly around the eyes; a sweep of powder, once used to set everything in place, can leave things looking flatter, drier – a little less like skin. Instead of persisting with the same products, it’s worth taking it as a cue to reassess.

As any makeup artist will tell you, adapting your beauty routine as you get older is key. It’s something Trinny Woodall has long understood. Since launching Trinny London, her focus has been on creating products that work with changing skin – addressing texture, tone and luminosity without unnecessary heaviness. “A lot of brands say they care about mature skin, but Trinny actually takes the time to figure out what works,” says legendary makeup artist Vincent Ford. “She thinks about the actual concerns – be it texture, firmness, wrinkles – and creates products with those in mind.”

One product that has garnered a loyal following is the original Miracle Blur, a mattifying balm designed to smooth over deep lines and diffuse texture. Now, it’s been reimagined. The new Miracle Blur Diffuser takes that same soft-focus effect and translates it into a lighter, more fluid formula.

How does the new Miracle Blur Diffuser differ to the original?

The original is a heavy-lifting formula with a thick, putty-like texture that’s designed for deeper lines and wrinkles. By contrast, the reformulated version (or, as Trinny likes to call it, ‘Miracle Blur’s new baby sister’) has a breathable, gel-balm texture that’s especially suited to fine lines. “It glides over fine lines to create a soft-focus, diffused finish all over the skin. It softens texture in seconds, like when the lighting hits just right and your skin looks amazing,” she says in an Instagram demo.

“This version is just easier to apply,” echoes Vincent, adding that because it’s more fluid, it melts into the skin on contact. Rather than masking, it works by diffusing how light hits the face. “It’s going to blur the texture and give a little bit of mattification – but it’s not about getting rid of wrinkles, it’s about making everything look softer.”

Unlike the original, which has a slight pink tint, the new formula is completely transparent – meaning it works across all skin tones without leaving behind any residue. It’s also laced with hydrating ingredients, including hyaluronic acid, so it won’t cling to dry patches or settle into lines in the same way some other mattifying products can.

How to apply the new Miracle Blur Diffuser

Seeing the product in action at the launch event, Vincent was clear on one thing: less is more. “Think of it as something you press into areas where the skin needs a little softening, rather than a product you apply across the entire face,” he says. The aim isn’t to eliminate shine entirely, but to subtly refine texture while ensuring skin still looks fresh and alive.

Technique matters here. “I definitely wouldn’t swipe it on or apply it with a makeup brush – or even use the applicator directly,” he notes, explaining that doing so can disturb the makeup underneath. Instead, squeeze a small amount onto the back of your hand, warm it between your fingers, then gently tap it into the skin. It may look slightly glossy at first, but it quickly settles into a soft-focus, semi-matte finish.

As for where to use it, placement is instinctive. Around the eyes to soften fine lines, along laughter lines where foundation tends to settle, or anywhere texture catches the light. “I like to press it into those areas so your foundation doesn’t move,” Vincent adds. “You can just tap it exactly where you need it.” If you tend to steer clear of powder products (even the best setting powders), this is a brilliant alternative – what Trinny describes as “a soft-focus filter in a tube.”

Perhaps it's '90s nostalgia (see also: The Body Shop Dewberry scent and Chanel Rouge Noir nail polish revivals) or the versatility of new iterations, but lip liner is having a huge renaissance. Sales shot up more than 25% last year alone.

The best lip liner’s ability to create a fuller lip look hasn't just caught our attention – it's also crossed the path of model and actor Cara Delevigne via a tip-off from her iconic godmother, Dame Joan Collins.

Rather than turning to aesthetic doctors for a lip plumping effect, Delevigne deploys a simple overlining trick taught by the legendary Dame Joan - so we've asked expert makeup artists exactly how we can have a go ourselves.

What is Dame Joan Collins' overlining lip technique?

Exactly what it says it is: using lip liner to enhance the shape of your lips, either on the natural outline itself, or just beyond it. Delevigne revealed the simple hack when discussing her beauty secrets with Bustle, saying, "loads of people think I got lip filler when I just get my makeup artist to overline my lips. Joan Collins, my godmother, taught me that."

No wonder this trick has A-list buy-in, as the vermillion border of our lips naturally loses definition with age; redefining them has an added youth-boosting bonus.

For those of us without makeup artists on hand, the technique is still more than doable. Gabriella Elio, make-up artist and founder of Sweed cosmetics, advocates going out with the lines. “Focusing on areas like the Cupid’s bow or the centre of the lips, when done well, creates the illusion of fuller, more defined lips while still looking natural and balanced.”

“The idea of lining with a slightly darker pencil – rather than matching it to your lipstick, which would have been the trend five years ago – is to construct shadow, creating a natural contour," agrees renowned British makeup artist Caroline Barnes.

How does overlining make lips look bigger?

“Any kind of darkness you’re adding with make-up works to push back particular areas of the face,” notes Barnes. “This, in turn, adds depth and brings forward the skin next to it. When the lips are naturally full, a shadow is already there, and conversely, when you create a soft shadow behind your lips, it gives them a fuller look.”

It’s a universal technique that works on pretty much everyone. “Overlining can be used for most lip shapes,” adds Elio, “but it’s most effective when adapted to the individual. Rather than outlining the entire mouth, it works best when enhancing specific areas depending on your natural shape. The goal is to complement your features rather than dramatically change them.”

Prepping lips and choosing pencils

As any make-up artist will you, preparation is key for achieving the perfect result. “It’s important that lips are hydrated, but don’t use liner over lip balm as you won’t be able to get the adhesion you’d like,” warns Barnes. “They need to be supple but dry in order for the shade to stay on the lips. So applying to a soft, dry base will make all the difference.”

As for choosing the perfect pencil, texture is everything. “A creamy but precise lip liner is ideal for overlining,” recommends Elio. “You want a formula that glides on effortlessly without dragging the skin, while still having enough structure to stay in place. You want a texture that balances being smooth, blendable, and long-wearing.”

Expert tips for overlining your lips

Both of our experts agree that using a shade which mimics your natural lip tone, rather than your lipstick shade, looks fresh and modern as well as being the most flattering. “For the most natural result, choose a liner close to your own lip tone or just slightly deeper,” advises Elio. “This creates a soft, seamless base that enhances lip without looking overdone. You can then layer lipstick or gloss on top for an effortless, refined finish.”

Once lips are soft, smooth, and dry, take your sharpened pencil and start drawing with a light touch. “I start at the inner corner of the mouth and work up to the Cupid’s bow, then blend either with a cotton bud or eyeshadow brush to give softness and shadow rather than a line,” instructs Barnes. “That way the result is soft and diffused, creating that pretty, plump fullness in seconds.”

Things to put on your lips - from balms to glosses and long-lasting lipstick - have to be one of the most widely used beauty products. Top three globally, for sure.

They're also the most emblematic. Type the generalised term 'makeup' into a WhatsApp message, and up pops the algorithm's suggested emoji: a tube of lipstick. Even the robots know.

Given that popularity, I'd guess you've already got a few favourites rolling around your handbag or makeup drawer. But there's always room for something new and exciting, isn't there? Especially when it'll set you back less than a good bottle of olive oil in today's economy.

Why this £13 plumping lip stain is my beauty buy of the week

Usually, with lip products, comfort works in inverse proportion to staying power. So matte lipsticks or stains stick around, but feel - and look - tight, drying, and unflattering on thinner or lined lips. Lip oils and glosses feel great and flatter well, but have to be reapplied at a rate most of us struggle to sustain.

So it's been a thrill to discover a product that is a true Jack of all trades - and I'll tell you why saying that is not damning it with faint praise.

I deeply care about and consider what to include in this Sunday column each week, and this affordable crowd-pleaser feels correct for now. 1. Aleesha's sculpting method

"I don’t love my slightly round face shape with the little pockets of fat here and there, so for me, blush and bronzer placement is all about creating a sculpted and lifted look," explains Digital Beauty eCom & Shopping Editor, Aleesha Badkar.

"I start with a not-too-warm bronzer on the corners underneath my cheekbones, sides of my chin, and sides of my nose to contour those areas and create shadows for a more sculpted look. For a flattering tanned look, I also add a touch of bronze to the points where the sun would hit, like the top of my forehead and the bridge of my nose.

"I then lightly brush a warm but subtle mauve on the very high points of my cheekbones, followed by a dab of more-pigmented (but similar colour) cream blush for a more impactful and longer-lasting look. After a dab of blush on the tip of the nose to add a bit more depth to the look, I blend it with a firm brush, and I'm ready to go!"

2. Fiona's low-maintenance, one-product method

"My makeup routine is largely efficiency-based. But, unusually, I do have a bit of a process when it comes to my cheeks," says Digital Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim. "First, I smoosh a bit of cream or liquid blush on my hand and start to pick it up bit by bit using, not a blusher brush, but a dense foundation one - they just seem to work better with creams.

I then pull one of those ‘duck face’ type pinched smiles we see a lot of on social media, so the chubbiest bit of my cheeks and cheekbones reveal themselves, and start lightly stippling away, finishing with a bit of ring-finger blending. Placement-wise, experts sometimes advise keeping blush high up, but I love bringing it right down to the apples of my cheeks - it’s a nice, rosy, outdoorsy vibe.

"If you’ve noted the absence of bronzer, that’s because I don’t really use it (see: efficiency), but I’ve been wearing this 2-in-1 Bareminerals Complexion Rescue Blonzer a fair bit lately, and enjoying its healthy, glowing warmth."

3. Naomi's pale skin & subtle definition method

"Except in the summer months, when I break out my trusty Chanel Les Beige bronzer, I actually don't wear bronzer day to day," notes Digital Beauty Writer Naomi Jamieson. "Instead, I use a cream contour stick, as I find most bronzers look too warm and a bit orangey on my pale skin. Westman Atelier's Face Trace Stick in the shade biscuit is my favourite, as the soft, taupey shade offers just the right amount of sculpting and definition, without looking obvious. I use it as sort of a cross between a bronzer and contour, as I apply it under my cheekbones, along my nosebridge, jaw and forehead, for a subtle sculpt, but I really diffuse it - rather than keeping the blending very precise and sharp.

"Blush placement-wise, I apply my Violette_Fr's Bisou blush stick in Maryam (yes, you're right, I do love a makeup stick), right onto the apples of my cheeks, but I blend it upwards along my cheekbone and over my initial contouring. This ensures a very seamless finish and gives the illusion that I have naturally more defined cheekbones and just generally gives a bit more dimension to my more oval face. I also apply a dot of blush across the bridge of my nose, to achieve a subtle 'sun-kissed' sort of finish."

4. Sennen's seamless 'Blonzer' method

"For my cheek makeup, I typically opt to apply my cream blush and bronzer formulas on the higher points of the face," say Digital Beauty Writer, Sennen Prickett. "For example, I begin by applying bronzer slightly higher than the hollows of my cheeks, then I place my blush directly on top of my cheekbones before blending downwards into my bronzer for a seamless ‘blonzer' finish.

"This placement and blending together of the two formulas not only helps to prevent an unblended appearance but also delivers the complexion with a lifted effect."

When it comes to makeup, mascara is one of the products we tend to reach for the most - after all, lifted, lengthened and fluttery lashes can take a makeup look from laidback to put-together in seconds.

From high-street buys to niche, makeup artist-loved staples, mascara prices have quite a wide range - and, at £20, Glossier's Lash Slick falls around the middle of the spectrum.

And while I have been a true Lash Slick loyalist for nearly a decade, this niche tubing mascara that's half the price has definitely caught my eye...

While I don't think I'll ever be giving up my Lash Slick completely, as the results really are unmatchable, if you're looking for a more affordable alternative or just something for casual days to help stretch your more expensive options a little longer, this £10 buy has my vote.

While a smoky eye is always a timeless choice, this year, I'm spotting a far more understated approach to wearing eyeshadow. A look that features minimal blending and sees just one, solo shadow, applied across the entirety of the lid, adding a sheer, veil-like wash of colour, and the effect is incredibly chic.

Requiring just your best mascaras and or eyeliner, along with one neutral shade of eyeshadow, this latest, minimalist look has been a constant throughout award season so far. This year's Golden Globes, for instance, saw stars like Emma Stone, Leslie Mann and Jessie Buckley (to name just a few) all sporting iterations of this diffused, almost sheer eyeshadow look. Paris Fashion Week, the BAFTAs and the Actor Awards were a similar story, and so, in a very Carrie Bradshaw-esque way, "I can't help but wonder," is this 2026's alternative to the classic smoky eye? It's simple but incredibly flattering, and feels so apt in this landscape of more natural, low-maintenance makeup.

The best part about it is that you don't have to be confident or proficient at applying eyeshadow; you just need the right shade and product. And having pored over this year's award season looks, I've got the trend sussed.

The sheer, solo eyeshadow look everyone's wearing this award season

Taking the BAFTAs as one subject of my study, I noticed that taupe shades and soft, muted greys and browns seemed to be the most popular variation of this look. Think of it as almost like a veil of sheer or smoky colour across your lid. Complete with either just feathered, mascara-covered lashes, for a very soft and pared-back look, or with a small winged liner or touch of black pencil applied to the lower lash line - for more of a sultry finish.

As mentioned, the Golden Globes were a similar story, and in general, I've noticed this style of simple eyeshadow everywhere - from my Instagram feed, to even my own preferences, as I too have been opting for just a quick swipe of the best cream eyeshadows over anything else. And while, of course, there's still been the occasional smoky eye and heavier winged liner on the red carpet, 2026 really does seem to be the year of diffused, subtle-impact eyeshadow.

Celebrity Makeup artists, like Nina Park, have perfected the soft, minimalistic look. In fact, Park's use of neutral shades and perfectly diffused, matte finishes has played no small part in why this eyeshadow style, in particular, is so popular and talked about - as it's very much one of her signatures.

Our eyeshadow picks for achieving the look

As for recreating the look yourself, it couldn't be easier. All you need is a subtle shade of eyeshadow - one you find compliments your skin tone and eye colour. Taupe, grey and soft browns are the key colours I would suggest, especially if you're going for an understated, everyday sort of look or want to add eyeliner. That said, a shimmer shade (like Urban Decay's Space Cowboy) is also a lovely choice for a pop of glamour.

I recommend investing in a fluffy blending brush, as well as cream eye shadow formulas, as they're easy to buff out (with said brush, or even just your finger) and deliver a 'soft-focus' sort of effect, which is very much what I've been seeing on the red carpet. Then simply swipe your chosen shade over your entire eyelid, and either finish with a coat or two of the best natural-looking mascara, or add a thin flick of eyeliner to your outer corners or along your waterline.

If you're looking for a reference picture to follow, I've rounded up a few of my favourite examples worn by celebs on the red carpet.

1. Keeley Hawes

Okay, while this wasn't technically this year, this makeup look really stuck with me and set my trend-spotting senses tingling. Above, we can see Keeley Hawes is wearing a wash of taupe-y brown across her lids and along her lower-lash line with just a hint of liner and mascara. The effect still feels very minimalistic and fresh, but offers a bit more oomph than just mascara would.

2. Kerry Washington

The whole team and I just loved Kerry Washington's look at the 2026 BAFTAs, from her chic navy nails to her diffused eye makeup. Despite being just one shade of eyeshadow, it instantly adds definition and interest around her eyes, whilst still easily blending with the rest of her makeup. The use of similar tones elsewhere, like her blush and lip colour, also adds this cohesive finish that is so chic and flattering.

Having heard great things about this lengthening and subtly tinting formula, our team, who are very particular about their lashes, put Merit's Clean Lash mascara to the test. Here are our honest thoughts and overall verdict on the popular buy...

As a beauty team, we're pretty well-versed in the best mascaras, having tried hundreds, spanning everything from waterproof and volumising formulas to trendy burgundy mascaras. That said, we do all have quite different lash types and lengths, so one colleague's favourite won't necessarily stack up to the needs of another. But where our exact formula needs might differ, we do all align on the desired finish. We want elongated, fanned and lifted lashes that look natural (i.e. no clumps) but last. So, when one team member recommended Merit's Clean Lash for delivering on all of the above, and with the adage of no smudging and transferring, we couldn't pass up the chance to trial it as a collective.

Now, as fans of several of Merit Beauty's other buys (Digital Beauty Writer, Naomi Jamieson, for one, swears by the Minimalist Complexion Stick), as well as many of the best tubing mascaras, our expectations were high. So, how did it fare when faced with an array of different lash lengths and checklists to meet?

As a brand, Merit is all about minimalism. Their products are designed to be versatile, everyday favourites that enhance and elevate, rather than being very dramatic or high-coverage. We would describe the line as the capsule wardrobe of beauty, with each buy promising to fill an essential role (and sometimes several in one). Their mascara is a similar story. It's a tubing formula, and a popular one at that, designed to lift and lengthen, without smudging or transferring. An ideal buy for those of us who prefer natural-looking mascara.

Our Digital Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim, was already a fan of the formula, and after hearing her glowing review, we decided to see if we all had a similarly positive-experience. Up until now, we've all gravitated towards different options. For instance, our Beauty Shopping & eCommerce team, Aleesha Badkar and Sennen Prickett, both of whom have quite long lashes, adore Glossier's Lash Slick. Meanwhile, fellow Beauty Writer, Naomi Jamieson, prefers Dior's Diorshow Pump N Volume Mascara for adding lift to her short, straight ones.

"I wouldn't say I'm a mascara snob, but I definitely know what I like," quips our Beauty Shopping & eCommerce Editor, Aleesha Badkar. "So, as much as I was secretly taken with the elegant, streamlined design of this tube, when I pulled out the bristled mascara wand that looked like it was quite wet, I didn't have high hopes. Thankfully, my favourite makeup brand proved me wrong.

"The conical design of the sturdy bristles did what my go-to comb-esque wands usually do and slid through my lashes, lifting and curling, while creating a fanned out shape that literally just bounced into place. And that wet formula I thought was going to make them drop straightaway? It somehow dried into place almost immediately, setting the lashes and keep them there all day long. No dropping. No flaking. No smudging or transferring. I am utterly sold."

"As someone who prefers more subtle, natural-leaning makeup, I want my mascara to accentuate and lift my lashes, without looking clumpy and obvious," shares Digital Beauty Writer, Naomi Jamieson. "I have quite short and straight lashes, and so I find that sometimes very volumising and pigmented mascaras can look too heavy and dramatic on me. I'm also really not a clumpy lash girl - as you can probably tell from the fact I've already mentioned the word twice. Thus, I just want my everyday mascara to tint and lift, more so than anything else, which, luckily for me, is something Merit's mascara does beautifully.

"Despite appearing quite wet on the brush, the formula is deceptively buildable. The conical, bristly brush catches and fans out each lash, delivering a very flattering, splayed look that stays put. It dries quickly, meaning you can add more layers if you want to, without the risk of your lashes drooping or smudging everywhere. I find after curling my lashes, though, that just one layer is enough for an elevated but subtle finish.

"Another pro in its favour is that it doesn't transfer throughout the day, which is something I have previously struggled with, as I am partial to creamy makeup products, which don't actually help with smudgey mascara. It's also a breeze to remove, thanks to it being a tubing formula. So safe to say, it's my new everyday go-to."

Fiona McKim, Digital Beauty Editor

"I wear tubing mascara most days, I've always had deep-set eyes and now have increasingly hooded eyelids, so smudging is a big problem for me," explains Digital Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim, "This means I know my onions when it comes to smear-proof formulas, and I’m pleased to say this absolutely nails the brief and survives all day without any mess."

"It’s worth saying that no tubing formula will ever be ultra volumising or dramatic - it’s not how they’re built. Instead, this gives optimum zhush for daily life. My lashes look a little bit darker, longer, and lifted, thus my eyes look wide-awake and fresher. Just a personal preference, but I don't want overly dramatic lashes most days anyway. Clean Lash gives an enhanced but still fairly natural look, which tracks nicely with this brand's ethos."

"I’m very picky when it comes to my go-to mascaras, so it’s quite an achievement for the Merit formula to impress me," says Digital Beauty Writer Sennen Prickett.

"First thing to note is that I love its slim, delicate wand that effortlessly glides through the lashes, making sure to coat each and every one. The formula wasn’t overly wet either, which allowed for a neat and easy application, without weighing down the lashes.

"Despite having very straight eyelashes (they almost point downwards), it still had the ability to add length and a slight curl for a natural fluttery effect. With all that said, I’d say it’s especially perfect for those who prefer lashes with a soft and natural finish."

Having launched a decade ago, The Ordinary has quickly become one of the most recognisable drugstore skincare brands thanks to its lineup of science-backed formulas that all boast affordable price tags.

Now, the brand's latest launch, the Lash Curl Finisher, has already been making waves on social media for rivalling some of the best clear mascaras, with shoppers hailing its ability to curl even the straightest of lashes. Naturally, our entire beauty team had to get their hands on it so we could share our verdict...

Aleesha Badkar, Beauty Shopping & eCommerce Editor

After hearing an abundance of impressive reviews, Aleesha Badkar, Beauty eCommerce Editor, was intrigued to try this unique formula: "I've heard so much about the Ordinary Curl Enhancer and honestly, I didn't believe it would work - but it really is like a lash lift in a tube. I was very wary of this before trying. I thought that either it would be too wet that my lashes would just immediately drop or it would be such a robust formula that it would be more like a clear mascara and leave my lashes with a crispy finish."

However, going against her initial predictions, Aleesha was left pleasantly surprised: "But somehow, it manages to toe the line between the two, giving my lashes a subtle and fluttery lift, without making it look like I'm actually wearing anything - and not so much as a tacky finish in its wake. While I would love everyone to think I simply have naturally curled, lifted and fluttery lashes, I thought it's only fair that I share."

Naomi Jamieson, Digital Beauty Writer

After much testing, Digital Beauty Writer, Naomi Jamieson speaks highly of the formula in question: "For days when you're not in the mood for heavy makeup, or really any at all, but still want to feel a bit put-together and fresh, The Ordinary's Lash Curl Finisher will make a great addition to your routine. It subtly defines your lashes and holds their curl (afforded by a lash curler - it's worth noting that this product doesn't curl them for you) all day long."

For context, Naomi's natural lashes are on the shorter, straighter side but she says: "I find that this really gives them an elongated and glossy look that is so much more enhanced than just curling them and calling it a day, whilst remaining just as easy and low-maintenance."

As with anything, nothing can be totally perfect. "My one main gripe, though, is that the formula does stay slightly tacky. This is fine when I'm staying in for the day, but add windy weather and my long hair into the equation, and things do get a bit annoying and uncomfortable - much like when strands stick to your lip gloss and so on," notes Naomi.

What's more, Naomi highlights the finish of the formula after applying: "You can also see the formula at the very ends of my lashes; sometimes it will look a bit white from where it's picked up a tinge of concealer or setting powder, but this feels like a small price to pay for the lovely, defined look it gives them. I also like that it features squalane to condition the hairs and add shine."

"All in all, I think it's a great alternative to mascara if you prefer a more natural makeup look, or none at all, but want to accentuate the look of your eyelashes. If you have quite sensitive eyes, though, I'd stick to a clear mascara that has been formulated with that in mind and dries down completely, for a similar effect."

Sennen Prickett, Digital Beauty Writer

As someone who has had Korean lash lifts, Digital Beauty Writer, Sennen Prickett hailed this formula similar: "While you remove it at the end of every day, as you would with a mascara, this innovative formula is like a temporary lash lift in a tube. I can say the results of this lash finisher is very similar – but for a fraction of the price."

Despite her initial scepticism, Sennen was left impressed with this buy: "I have naturally have very straight lashes (I'm talking so straight that they practically point downwards) that struggle to hold a curl, even when wearing mascara, so I was sceptical to try this formula. However, I quickly ate my words as this gel-like formula effortlessly lifted and slightly curled my eyelashes for a natural, fluttery effect."

Acting as a more natural-looking alternative to mascara, but boasting slightly more noticeable results than a clear mascara, Sennen adds: "I find myself wearing this on no-makeup days to bring a bit of life to my face and even to the gym – of which it withstands exercise and sweating. Not to mention, it doesn't cause your lashes to droop as soon as you step outside."

Much like Naomi, the only downside Sennen found worth noting was that: "The formula doesn't fully dry down, meaning your lashes are left with a slight stickiness. While it's not that noticeable, there have been an odd few occasions where I've had strands of hair stick to my eyelashes. However, it's a small price to pay for that lash lift effect."

The Ordinary Lash Curl Finisher: Our team's overall verdict

The team's verdict is in. The Ordinary's Lash Curl Finisher is essentially a more affordable, temporary alternative to a salon lash lift. It's especially great for those with naturally straight lashes that struggle to achieve any lasting lift or curl and also a stellar choice for those who prefer a natural lash look. That said, if you can bear the slight stickiness that it leaves behind after application, it's well worth the investment – even more so when it costs you less than £10 for a tube.

I've always enjoyed how on-the-nose makeup categories are. Compared with the seemingly deliberate obscurity of skincare (essence water - what?), cosmetics are a real 'say what you see' genre.

Estee Lauder Double Wear - have you heard of it? This foundation launched just shy of 30 years ago, with eternally fabulous Liz Hurley as its face, and a simple USP of really going the distance, with a soft 'cashmere' finish.

This was unusual in the late '90s, when the best lightweight foundations were but a twinkle in formulators' eyes, and bases essentially ranged from 'matte' to 'very matte' with heavy-handed coverage.

If you've tried the OG, you'll know it nails its job at lasting the day and keeping your skin mattified and even. But, by today's hydration-seeking, radiance-chasing standards, the finish was a touch weighty for some.

I think a lot of us are drawn to foundations promising light coverage, which is fair enough - who wants something heavy all over their face? - and so modern skin tints and tinted moisturisers are justifiably popular.

But if you have pigmentation, little broken veins, skin that gets a bit hot, or red, or oily in places - any of the ordinary markers of a 40+ face - something a bit heftier like this will probably be more satisfying.

Makeup artist and founder of KJH Brand, Katie Jane Hughes, took to TikTok to share the easy industry trick in question. Beginning the video, she says: "I'm 40 years old, and concealer never, ever sinks into my fine lines, and this is why. Priming the brush and the placement of where you first place the product are the two most important things.”

After demonstrating what not to do in terms of application, which caused her fine lines to be enhanced and creasing to occur, Hughes shows her preferred application method, a technique which she dubs ‘priming the brush’, she says: "Moral of the story is, prime the product with a brush, use less, and you can always add more if you feel like you need it.”

Essentially, the trick involves distributing the product onto the palm of your hand before thoroughly buffing your brush into it, until the bristles are evenly coated. Hughes then uses the brush to apply the product to certain areas of her face for a brightened, lifted, and light coverage finish – that also withstands creasing. This versatile tip can also be used with your other cream and liquid products, whether that be your foundation, concealer, bronzer, or blush.

The makeup artist advises that it’s also worth considering the skincare you use and the climate that you live in: "The reason why you have to consider skincare is that if your skincare is on thick, rich, and creamy, which you might need, it's gonna make areas where you would crease, crease easier. And, if the climate is hot, it's gonna make the makeup products that you put in those areas crease easier.”
