We’ve seen this picture before and this makes sense as Jasmine was posting about a new episode of A Place in the Sun: What Happened Next airing on Channel 4. Whilst she might be excited to re-visit a former house-buyer, we’re just as thrilled to see this combination again.

The swimsuit itself was beautiful and bold. It had a V-neckline and looked to be halterneck, with a tie-waist belt secured in a pretty bow at the front.

Even if you’re not someone who wears a lot of vibrant colours day-to-day, it’s always fun to have a few bright pieces in your swimwear collection. In the summer months and when you’re on holiday it just feels quite joyful and red is a striking tone that looks sensational with neutrals.

Jasmine could’ve easily paired her red swimming costume with a black or white coverup and sandals to create more of an "outfit" to take her from the poolside to a café or restaurant. On A Place in the Sun she didn’t need this but she did elevate her swimwear to new heights with her red lipstick.

Once commonly worn, nowadays many people are daunted by the idea of wearing red lipstick. I personally love it and have three in my collection, with one - MAC Russian Red - looking like a similar cool-toned red to Jasmine’s.

A long-lasting lipstick is a must for a red lipstick look and if a blueish red isn’t for you, then orangey-reds are also beautiful. Jasmine finished off her look with a floppy wide-brimmed hat and a shell-adorned necklace to complete the elegant-yet-beachy ensemble.

These accessories were lovely additions but the matching lipstick was what really took her swimsuit to the next level. We can’t help hoping that we’ll see Jasmine Harman bring them both back at some point this summer.

Sharing the contents of her beauty bag in a video with Harper's Bazaar, Keira Knightley revealed that she's not really a fan of the red lipstick: "I'm not a red girl, it goes all over my teeth, I can never remember to reapply." Instead, she tends to gravitate towards subtle and low-maintenance shades. This is good news if you're equally averse to even the best red lipstick and are in the market for a new nude lip.

"I'll always go kind of natural shades," Knightley said, having pulled a Charlotte Tilbury lipstick out of her goldmine of a makeup stash. "What's this one? 'Glowing Jen,' but I think she [Charlotte Tilbury] does really good naturals - just a little pop - I also always use a bit on my cheeks as well, I don't know that you're meant to but I find that that's quite good for doing a little bit of both."

Knightley then went on to remark that the combination of a dark smokey eye and quite a natural lip is her go-to, as opposed to a red lip, "it just suits my face and I'm happy with it," adding: "I learnt very quickly that I was not a person who could deal with red lipstick 'cos it ended up all over my face. So, I've stuck with that and just gone with like a more nude lip."

As with any lipstick, we recommend prepping the lips first with a scrub - to remove any flakiness or dry skin - followed by one of the best lip balms or best lip oils. Do this 20 or so minutes beforehand if you can, if not, pat off any excess on a tissue before finally applying your chosen matte or satin shade.

For a more precise pout and boosted longevity, use one of the best lip liners in a similar shade, before topping it with Glowing Jen.

There's no denying that a red long-lasting lipstick is a timeless beauty staple. It never fails to look sophisticated (or make the wearer appear more put together) and is particularly perfect during the festive season, bright red being quintessential of the Christmas colour palette. While not technically a far cry from a classic blue or orange-toned red, burgundy is darker, with a touch of brown, mirroring a glass of red wine - or for a more festive comparison, mulled wine. So far this winter, burgundy has been the colour of choice, be it for handbags, coats and even manicures. In fact, our beauty team's Christmas nail looks even included burgundy nails and now it seems, it's coming for our makeup bags too.

Indeed, according to Laura Mercier’s makeup artist, Jess Kohn, it's definitely the 'colour of the moment' and is perfect for a chic, festive lip - though, Kohn does note that, "nothing screams festive glam more than a bold lip," including a classic pillar box red. But, for those wanting to try something a tad darker and trendy, we've quizzed Kohn on how to nail a burgundy lipstick look - and how to ensure it doesn't budge through prosecco-sipping and overall festive merriment.

How to do a burgundy red lip for Christmas

"To create the perfect burgundy lip, I suggest using a burgundy or brown lip liner such as Laura Mercier lipliner in Brown Tulle or Red Velvet," says Kohn adding: "This will add dimension and depth. Use this to line your lips to create the shape you like and continue to fill in the entire lip itself. This gives a base colour and acts as Velcro for your lipstick," similar to how one of the best eyeshadow primers would a matte or glitter shadow.

Next, Kohn advises us to, "add a light dusting of Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder over the lip to ensure longevity and to prevent any lipliner smudging throughout the day or night.

"It’s now time to go in with your lipstick of choice. I can’t stop using Caviar Smoothing Lipstick in the shade 'Mulberry Moiree', it lasts for hours and smells amazing too."

As a final, optional step, Kohn also recommends adding a final dusting of setting powder, as "this will make your lipstick bulletproof so you can set it and forget it and enjoy your festive season." This is also a trick Digital Beauty Editor, Aleesha Badkar swears by when wearing red or dark red lipstick but she also recommends applying the original Glossier Balm Dotcom before your best lip liners and lipstick, to ward off dryness - for a flawless finish.

When she took off her scarf, she revealed the beautiful satin scarf that was hiding underneath it, with this piece also boasting a red-heavy pattern to tie in the festive shade - and who could ignore her leather gloves? The style is so sleek and oozes elegance, with the heavy and luxurious fabric perfectly blending practicality with style.

A swiping of red lipstick only further emphasised the festive feel of her look, with Anne being a long time fan of the bright and bold lip colour. The matte finish of the lipstick gave the colour a subtler, more muted look which is perfect for wearing day-to-day, with the raspberry-toned red stopping it from feeling like 'too much' for a more casual and laid-back affair.

Perhaps preempting the windy weather, Anne styled her hair in a chic updo and swept her hair back into a bun, though tied it loosely so as to leave tonnes of volume at the roots for a classic and timeless style.

When we think about skin tone, we’re talking about how light or deep your skin is, which can change depending on how exposed to the sun you are. What’s more integral is your unique undertone, which refers to the base of your skin. “It’s not just about colour,” explains Emily Simms, No7 Global Makeup Artist and Educator. “Understanding your skin’s undertone is the key to finding your ultimate shade.” So are you warm, cool or neutral?

“If you’re unsure, an easy way to check your undertone is to look at your wrists,” advises Emily. “If your veins appear more blue or purple, you’re likely cool-toned (pink-based), but if they look more green, you’re likely to have warm-toned skin (golden-based). If you’re somewhere in between, you likely have neutral undertones.” Emily also suggests looking in your jewellery box to work out your base, if you can't see the veins. “If you suit gold jewellery, you’re likely to prefer warmer, more orangey or browner tones, while fans of silver jewellery will prefer cooler pink or plum tones.”

Cool undertones:

If your veins lean towards blue-purple, you suit silver jewellery and you’re likely to burn in the sun, lip shades with bluish tones, like cherry reds, rosy nudes and magenta pink will complement.

Warm undertones:

Generally speaking, if your skin has olive, golden and yellow tones, and you tan easily, you can enhance your natural glow in warm lipstick shades like brick reds, coral and peachy nudes. Conversely, Emily often reaches for “lipsticks with a blue-toned base like plum-toned nudes or deep burgundy reds to make a statement.”

Neutral undertones:

Given that you suit both gold and silver jewellery, you naturally have a lot of options when it comes to choosing a lipstick shade. “For neutral undertones, the beauty is in the versatility,” says Emily. “Mauve, rose, and soft nudes complement neutral skin perfectly.”

2. Test it out

Now that you’ve nailed your undertone, it’s time to get swatching. “When it comes to finding the best colour lipstick for you, there’s no better way than to try it on your lips,” advises Emily. “We each have a unique shade to our lips that can alter the way lipstick looks and wears. If you want to try on any shades, you can pop into a Boots store and ask one of the No7 Beauty Advisors to suggest the perfect shades for you.”

Using AI technology, these try-on tools help take the guesswork out of finding the right lipstick shade to suit. I love a red lip, but on more than one occasion I have found myself regretting the formula I applied once I'd left the house. Only to wind up constantly checking it throughout the day or night to see if it had bled, smudged or worst of all, transferred to my teeth. This has subsequently put me off wearing matte lipsticks and even glosses because of the sheer maintenance of it all. Until that is, I took a leap of faith with a certain lipstick hybrid, which not only affords flattering pigment but a plumping, creamy and oh-so-comfortable texture.

Encased in a long, almost mascara-like tube, the Phantom Gloss features a twist-up applicator and angled tip, which perfectly melds to the shape of your lips - allowing the product to glide on evenly and effortlessly.

You can be light with it - and then just rub your lips together to spread the colour, for more of a stained effect - or apply a thicker layer, for a full-on glossy colour. I wear the shade Impulse, which is a deep red and while I would usually find such a colour daunting - especially for a casual setting - I feel so confident and chic when I wear this. The lightweight, glossy feel plays a big part in why. As mentioned, the formula is a hybrid - Hourglass claims it's a 3-in-1, but I would argue that it's more like four since it offers a wash of colour, hydration, plumping and a mirror-like shine.

Its balm consistency feels so smooth and lightweight on the lips and I find, because it's so glossy and almost sheer, I never worry about reapplying it on the go. I just swipe it on like I would a lip balm and to this day, have never had any kind of mishap with it.

As someone who experiences chapped lips quite often - especially in the winter months - I often avoid lipstick because of how easily it accentuates any texture or collects in drier creases of my lips. Hourglass' Balm smooths over them, affording even coverage and an oh-so-hydrated looking gleam - the nourishing effects of which I can feel hours after wear.

Speaking of the shine, the glassy finish is just unmatched. It makes my pout look so plump and does wonders for elevating my everyday makeup with very minimal effort involved. Another important pro is that it's not sticky. Take it from someone who can't stand a tacky lip, while this might occasionally snag a stray strand on a blustery day, it never feels gluey or thick like traditional glosses do. What is a blurred lipstick look and why is it so popular?

Affording a similar look to that of the best tinted lip balms but with a sexy, blurred edge, this diffused look is all about effortlessness. There are no precise lines here, in fact, you can retire your best lip liners for the foreseeable future as far as we're concerned.

As MUA Simone Otis explains: "The 'French girl' lip look is popular because it’s all about that effortless, chic vibe. It’s soft and natural, which feels more relatable and easy to wear, plus it fits right into the minimalist beauty trend. People love the low-maintenance yet stylish approach"

This look, with its softened lines and velvet finish, indeed makes shades like berry pink and a classic blue-toned red feel more versatile. The blurred effect, as Otis notes, "tones down the intensity" and can make, "bright shades feel less overwhelming and easier to wear every day."

Plus, Otis adds, that "this style of applying lipstick in a diffused way helps to blend the colour with your natural lip tone."

What's the best way to achieve a blurred lipstick look?

Now that we know what this trendy French lip look entails, how do we achieve it? Otis recommends, "applying lipstick or tinted balm with a finger for a smudged effect, often enhanced with a bit of gloss for shine. I might start the application with a brush but the finish works best by slightly blending and smudging the look with a fingertip, especially along the liner."

Formula-wise, creamy formulas are the best option as, "they provide a soft, blendable texture that makes it easy to achieve that diffused effect. Look for creamy lipsticks or tinted balms that feel hydrating and smooth. If you want a bit of staying power, you can also try a satin finish, which brings together the best of both worlds - comfort and a touch of shine."

Otis then adds to avoid 'overly' matte formulas, "as they won’t blend and diffuse to create the blurred edges you are aiming to create."

What lipstick colours work best for this look?

As for what colour to opt for, "I think any lip shade will work well using this technique for the application," says Otis, "Some of my favourite colours to apply this way are; a soft pink or rosy shade, which looks fresh and natural, a berry or plum shade, which gives you more depth but is more approachable and a bold red," which Otis notes affords more drama but in a softer way.

While lipstick might seem like the most classic and easy part of a makeup routine, there are actually a lot of different factors that can affect how a certain lipstick looks on you - or even how it looks with different outfits, makeup looks or on different occasions.

So whether it’s considering your overall look, thinking about your lipstick formula or enhancing your lip health for the best results, these are the tips that everyone who wears lipsticks needs to know about.

1. Use lip balm regularly

Most of us will use some sort of nourishing lip balm at least once a day, but if you’re planning on wearing a heavy lipstick or a long day in a matte lipstick, try and get as much moisture and nourishment to your lips as possible before applying your lipstick, to help prevent it from drying out and becoming uncomfortable to wear.

2. Learn your undertone

Learn your undertone in order to match your lipstick shades to your skin tone. Cooler skin tones tend to be those whose veins show up as blue on the skin, while those with warmer undertones will notice that their veins present as green.

3. Learn what finish suits you

Lipsticks have many different finishes - and while every lipstick can suit every person in their own way, there are some finishes that might suit some better than others. Those with oily skin might prefer matte or satin finishes over something shiny, while those with smaller lips might want to make them pop with gloss or a shiny finish, for example.

4. Prep lips with lip scrub

Give your lipstick the best base to sit on by using a soft lip scrub before applying. Scrub away any dry skin for a smooth and soft finish, that will give your lipstick an even finish and help it last longer. Try a scrub specifically made for lips, rather than a generic face scrub, as the ingredients will be better suited to the soft, delicate skin of the area.

5. Use an exfoliating lip serum

While these aren’t super common in most people’s skincare and makeup routines yet, an exfoliating lip serum can transform how your lips look and act both before and after you apply your lipstick. Unlike a lip scrub, which will buff away dry or flaky skin, a serum will exfoliate your lips using AHAs, working lower down in the skin barrier to fade away darker on top and leave lips brighter and fresher.

For an intense hit of moisture and nourishment, apply a hydrating lip balm or serum before bed and then lock it all in using a nighttime lip mask. Something with a jelly texture will sit well on top of a serum, without rubbing it off, or use something thicker if you’re wearing over lip balm.

For the best base over which to apply your lipstick, layer your moisture to keep lips soft and nourished and help your lipstick sit better and last longer. The night before, use either a lip balm with a nighttime mask over the top or a hydrating serum with a jelly mask on top. And then start off the morning with a touch of exfoliating serum with a light lip balm on top.

If you struggle with applying lipstick - either creating a shape you like or just staying within the lines - start your application by lining the lips with a sharp liner. Not only does this give you a chance to create the shape you like, but it also gives you some guidance if you struggle with a shaky hand!

Create a bolder lip and help your look last longer by filling in the lips with liner before applying your lipstick. Once you’ve lined the outside of your lips, draw 3-4 vertical lines along the lips at equally spaced intervals. This will make your look pop a bit more and give your lipstick something to grip to.

If you want to create a really defined look with a sharp shape, line your lips after applying your lipstick to create a clean, sharp finish. This is also helpful if your lipstick has quite a soft formula, as it will help prevent it from smudging.

To keep your lipstick in place, dab your lips with a touch of powder over the top. Take a soft face brush with a very light mist of translucent powder and just touch your lips. You could even cover your lips with a thin tissue first and dab over the top. Just make sure to only do this when wearing matte lipstick though!

Once you’ve done all the hard work of applying your lipstick and getting it exactly how you want it to look, set your look into place with a setting spray over the top. You don’t need too much - just a fine mist - and make sure to let it dry for a few minutes before you talk, eat or drink.

If you want a matte but comfortable finish - or you’re looking for something to last through a whole day without having to top up too much - try a liquid lipstick. A watery, highly pigmented colour that goes on wet and then dries onto lips can be tricky to apply, but the results are worth it.

A brighter, orange-pink coral lipstick is a brilliant way to inject a bit of bold colour into any makeup look – much like actress and producer Salma Hayek's ensemble for the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. 

Peachy pink

Though it's still quite a neutral shade, the peachy-pink tones of actress and producer Reese Witherspoon's lipstick here really complement her bronzed glow. The star wore this look to the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards. 

Barely-there nude

A very soft, pink-brown nude shade of lipstick adds a little "something" that allows your eye makeup to take centre stage, or it can simply be part of a more understated yet polished look – much like actress Zoe Saldana's makeup at the 2024 Met Gala. 

Rich berry

Very deep berry pink is always a solid choice of lipstick colour, as seen here on actress and singer Jennifer Hudson at the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards. Though the richness lends itself well to the winter months, when wine and berry tones are hugely popular, these shades make for a winning look year-round. 

Tangerine pink

One that slightly skews orange, but that's still very much one of the best pink lipstick colours, this tangerine shade seen on actress Naomi Watts is a really pretty choice. The star wore this look to the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute Celebrating Nicole Kidman in 2024. 

Pale nude pink

Pale pink is a brilliant choice if you want to add a noticeable hint of colour to your lips that still keeps things on the soft and understated side. Eva Longoria's makeup here, seen at the "Le Chouchou" Jacquemus' Fashion Show in 2023, is a great example of a soft glam makeup look.

Rose

Rosy pink is another classic choice of pink lipstick and is brilliant as an all-rounder for everyday wear and evening occasions. Here, actress and producer Priyanka Chopra's rich rose lip colour packs just the right amount of intensity to complement the rest of her makeup.

Pastel pink

For the 2024 Met Gala, actress Gabrielle Union's fresh and flawless-looking skin and delecate fluttery lashes were finished with a neutral lip, which had a hint of pastel pink – the perfect finishing touch to her ethereal look.

Coral pink

Another strong case for a classic coral-y pink shade of lipstick, actress Katherine Heigl wore this fresh makeup look, finished off with fluffy lashes, to the 2018 NBCUniversal Upfront Presentation.

Magenta

Another beautiful shade of purple-toned pink, actress Angela Bassett paired magenta lipstick with a slick of liquid liner for the 2023 Golden Globes – resulting in some serious red carpet glamour. 

Fresh peach nude

Another nice hint of pink, this time in a peachy shade, here actress Sandra Oh's lipstick matches her choice of blush for a very pulled-together look – which the star wore to the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. 

Cerise

A stunning rich and widely flattering shade of pink, actress Kerry Washington paired this cerise lipstick with an intense smokey eye on the red carpet of the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. 

True beige

Another example supporting the idea that you can't go wrong with a good beige lipstick, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez paired hers with glossy, flushed skin and a smokey eye for a photocall for Netflix's Atlas in 2024. 

Watermelon pink

A brilliant choice of a brighter pink and a classic summer lipstick colour, actress Nicole Kidman wore this pretty shade at the Gala for the Global Ocean hosted by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco in 2019.

Barely there beige

In a great example of tonal makeup, here actress Halle Berry's barely-there beige lip adds to the seriously fresh overall feel of her look – worn at the 27th Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Celebration in 2021. 

Petal pink

Adding a great wash of colour along with her blusher, we love this pretty petal pink lipstick worn by actress and activist Jane Fonda to the 2024 Environmental Media Association Awards Gala.

Dusty pink

This look, seen on actress Natalie Portman, adds the subtlest hint – but still a noticeable wash – of dusty pink to her look. The star opted for this shade of pink lipstick for the Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2024 show during that season's Paris Fashion Week.

A nude lip is scarcely absent from the red carpet, and while it's a reliable staple to have in your wheelhouse, Kate Moss' latest lipstick look is a modern, versatile and potentially more flattering departure...

We're not exaggerating when we say that our beauty team were in raptures over the model's makeup look for the 2024 King's Trust Global Gala on May 2nd. Moss stepped out with radiant skin (no doubt in part thanks to her best foundation go-to and contour trick by way of the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Contour Wand), a brown smokey eye and a lip look that had this writer furiously scrolling Instagram for a clue as to the products used. The lipstick in question was ever-so-slightly darker than her natural lip shade, complete with a warmer undertone that whilst still being subtle, managed to grab and hold our attention.

Of course, a nude hue is often the go-to for an effortless and understated finish, but there's something about Moss' choice of shade - and how it added just a touch more colour and oomph - that we adore. And, thankfully our sleuthing paid off, as we know the exact trio she used...

As mentioned, Moss appeared at The King's Trust 2024 Global Gala in New York City, wearing a long, cream silk dress and sporting an effortless makeup look - made up of a smokey eye, gleaming highlighter and a rose-nude lip.

Unlike most nude lipstick looks where you typically select the shade closest to your natural lip colour, Kate opted for the next shade up, which offered an ever-so-slightly more pronounced and fuller-looking pout - whilst still remaining understated. A great option if you're someone who often opts for a nude lip, but is looking for a slight variation - to differentiate between day and night or everyday and special occasions.

And in case you're looking to recreate Moss' look to a T, we can tell you that it involved two lip liners; Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Cheat in 'Love Trap' and 'Iconic Nude' and to finish, Charlotte Tilbury's Matte Revotion lipstick in 'Supermodel' (naturally).

What we love about Moss' chosen shade is that the premise can be adapted. Her chosen shade is just a touch darker and warmer than her natural lip look, which is a great option if you don't want your lips to appear more undone/or washed-out compared to the rest of your makeup - which is sometimes the risk with cooler nude lippies or ones that are exactly spot-on (or even a teensy bit lighter) to your lip shade beneath.

It's often assumed that a 'nude' lipstick should match your lips but Kate Moss' makeup proves that opting for a slightly darker hue can help to just accentuate your lips further - adding more definition and contrast from the rest of your face - whilst remaining very subtle.

It's simple but surprisingly transformative - especially for those who swear off more statement looks, like red lipstick. So, if you've been looking for the perfect everyday shade, that also works for more formal occasions, take a cue from Moss.

It's the perfect option for when you want to complete your makeup but not overwhelm or steal focus from your more statement eye look (like a bold lipstick look would) or if you're looking to achieve a natural effect - like Jamie Lee Curtis's glowing Oscars makeup. • Moisturise: Aleesha says to start with clean, hydrated lips, so apply lip balm beforehand, "and then just dab it off before applying your lipstick."
• Start with liner: For a sharp and defined look, Aleesha says to outline your lips with a sharp liner (no blunt tips here, thank you!). "Then draw a vertical line across the length of your lips to create a full and longer-lasting base. 
• Apply your lipstick: "Apply one layer - paying extra attention to filling in all the areas that don't have liner on."
• Remove excess: Aleesha then says to dab away any excess with a tissue, before applying a second coat.
• Set: As a final set, dust on some translucent setting powder to lock your shade in place: "For extra staying power, finish with a spritz of setting spray - just try not to move your mouth too much while it's drying."

As part of your lip prep, we'd also recommend using a lip scrub or applying a nourishing mask, followed by a clear, ultra-hydrating balm (like the ILIA Lip Wrap Reviving Balm, at Sephora) an hour or so before applying lippie, to remove dry skin and afford flawless results.
