Being an interiors enthusiast, I consider myself to be across all the latest interior design trends and leading decorating practices. It therefore feels only fitting to share my experience of using the expert-recommended 60-30-10 rule of using colour to redecorate my home.

After speaking to Emma Deterding, founder and creative director of Kelling Designs, I gained a better insight into how interior designers use the latest interior colour trends with a more balanced approach.

As a result, what was a feature wall is now a larger area of block colour, all my neutral wall colours now coordinate seamlessly with my large furniture pieces to create a greater sense of cohesion, and I've selected just one smaller accent tone. Here's how the 60-30-10 rule inspired me to create a more balanced colour scheme to make my home look more expensive...

What is the '60-30-10 rule' of interior design?

"The 60-30-10 rule is a general guideline interior designers use to introduce colour into a space in a balanced way," explains leading interior designer Emma Deterding.

"It states that a room should be decorated with 60% of a dominant colour, 30% of a secondary colour and then 10% of an accent colour, and is a great starting point for creating a cohesive colour scheme."

Having been keen to makeover my living room for ages, the excuse to try this interior design secret gave me the nudge I needed to start my project to see how this colour theory helps to create balance.

How to use the '60-30-10 rule'

Emma explains how to divide the colour ratios to apply this decorating rule when decorating a room. "The dominant colour will be the one that covers the largest areas of the room, such as walls, floors or large furniture pieces."

"The secondary colour will be used on furniture, textiles and smaller decor items, and the accent colour will be used on the smaller decorative accessories (think cushions, artwork, vases)."

It works well mainly because it can help to create a cohesive colour scheme, with the secondary and accent colours complementing the dominant colour.

This considered use of colour helps to provide a balanced feeling across the space, "keeping it grounded and easy on the eye," says Emma. "It offers flexibility in that it works with any colour palette, from bold brights to monochrome and neutrals."

However, there are no hard and fast rules after all, sometimes it's worth breaking decorating rules to make your home feel bespoke. Emma says: "The 60-30-10 rule can be adjusted depending on the colours being used, while allowing for a unique look."

Not one to completely conform when it comes to my own decor, I used the 60-30-10 rule but made my dominant 60 percent colour a neutral that incorporates walls, ceiling and large furniture staples such as my sofa and armchair.

This enabled me to use a secondary 30 percent colour on the walls, which are painted in one of the new Farrow & Ball colours, the striking and elegant shade 'Reduced Green'.

The 10 percent accent colour is pink, which is subtly added via cushions, vases and the print of my stunning new Ruggable Morris & Co Simply Severn Soft Pink Rug.

I was keen to tie pink into the scheme because I have used Farrow & Ball's Sulking Room Pink, one of the best pink paint colours in my opinion, in two connecting rooms. Therefore, there's an even greater cohesion from one room to another.

"Designers often adjust the percentages based on space and the overall aesthetic we're trying to create - ultimately, it's about creating a colourful design scheme that is balanced, harmonious and easy on the eye."

Does white count as a colour in the 60-30-10 rule?

What role do the best white paint colours play in this interior design practice? "White definitely counts as a colour in the 60-30-10 rule. In most cases, white would form the 60 percent colour," says Emma.

"Especially in minimalist (minimaluxe decor) or Scandi-inspired interiors where a clean, neutral backdrop is needed to allow other colours and textures to stand out."

"That being said, white can also function as the secondary or accent colour, providing balance and contrast for bolder, brighter shades." This might be the case for the maximalist decor trend, where bold colours dominate.

"The versatility and neutrality of white make it a valuable addition to colour schemes, even though it's technically the absence of colour," she concludes.

I could not be happier with the way my living room refresh has turned out, and I am putting this down to the more considered and balanced approach to how I've used colour.

The next room on my list to redecorate is the bathroom, and I will most certainly be applying this colour rule when redesigning the space.

"The theory refers to the idea that a surprising touch of red, whether deep, muted or vibrant, instantly transforms and harmonises any interior space, injecting elements of depth and energy," Stuart Dance, director of Inhouse Inspired Room Design, explains.

Red isn't a colour everyone would reach for when decorating a home, but that's exactly why the unexpected red theory works so well. It's playful, surprising, and intriguing, making it perfect for those who like to break the norm, like those who pay heed to the kitchen design rules worth breaking, for instance.

"It's a great fit for those who love to entertain, experiment with bold flavours in the kitchen, or just want to feel energised and inspired when they step into the space," Stuart agrees.

The unexpected red theory is underpinned by the idea that by adding red to a room where it doesn't look like it should belong, the room instantly pulls together. It's not exactly clear why this theory works, or where it comes from, but it's something that interior specialists and homeowners alike swear by.

"Even for those that aren't too fond of red for their interiors, when they see a room with red in it, it draws their attention," interior designer Alex Alonso from Mr Alex Tate comments. "There's something quite visceral about red that elicits an emotion."

In the bedroom, you might not want to commit to scarlet walls, but you could add a maroon or burgundy rug to the floor. "Layer the rug so it peeks out under the end of the bed – framing the focal point of the room," Megan from My Fitted Bedroom adds.

Updating the window dressings is another option, and one of our favourite ways to make a living room look more expensive on a budget.

"If you’ve got a small window, a textured window blind can be the impactful, unexpected pop of red added to a space," says Matt Thomas, design director at Apollo Blinds.

1. Quiet luxury

Given its timeless appeal, it's no surprise that the desire for 'quiet luxury decor' shows no signs of fading anytime soon – it's more of a movement than a short-term trend. Since breaking waves as one of the most coveted interior design trends back in 2024 this understated way of dressing homes has gone from strength to strength.

This trend cements how significantly the neutral colour palette is here to stay well into 2025 and beyond as the days of decorating with grey fade away. As one of the best living room paint colours and most soothing bedroom paint colours, we're looking to add warmth to give neutrals a new depth with intentional accents.

"Dial up the luxury of a neutral scheme with plush velvets, marble finishes and brass touches," says Esme. "This is the perfect trend to try if you already have a neutral decor, simply introduce dark shades of brown, umber and taupe alongside tactile textures – think thick-pile velvet and boucle fabrics."

This trend is the perfect place to continue to celebrate the appeal of tactile fabrics and materials to aid our sense of comfort and integration within our interiors. Touch plays such an integral role in how we feel in our homes, and therefore unknowingly steers how we choose home furnishings for this paired-back trend where colour takes a backseat.

2. Primary focus

On the other side of the design pond dopamine decor is bigger than ever this year, celebrating bold colour choices to fill homes with a sense of personal joy, rather than playing it safe with neutrals. You only have to look at the bright yellow that is Dulux's Colour of the Year 2025 True Joy to see that.

One of Pinterest's biggest trends of 2025 is 'Primary Play' a colour trend that is unapologetically loud and intent on making a style statement. Of course, by nature primary colours are highly saturated and very dominant so we see this as more of an accent and accessories interior colour trend.

"As primary colours are inherently strong, temper their boldness by combining them with warm neutrals and wooden finishes to balance the look," suggests Lena Gierasinska, head of product and displays at Barker and Stonehouse. "Use blue, a perennial favourite, as your base shade and combine mood-enhancing yellow tones with dramatic red hues for a hit of dopamine."

In addition to embracing the bold colour-drenching design trend, you can also add uplifting touches of colour via patterns and prints. "Experiment with joyful patterns too," adds Lena "Think abstract geometrics and hand-painted murals styled alongside funky candlesticks and accessories.

"For those who would like to experiment with this style but are unsure where to start, I’d recommend adding a rug. Flooring is the foundation of the room so it’s the perfect starting point. Adding a colourful, playful and contemporary rug requires minimal effort but delivers maximum impact, instantly transforming the space.”

3. Organic forms

Our approach to design has been growing increasingly curved since it emerged as a prominent interior trend in 2023. From sofas and armchairs with rounded edges and arching headboards to wavy mirrors, curves continue to welcome softness to our homes.

"Organic shapes are proving increasingly popular in interiors," says Lena Gierasinska. "They bring a sense of fluidity and natural harmony that feels both calming and inviting. Organic shapes create a greater sense of relaxation due to the softness of form. "Unlike sharp, angular lines, which can often feel rigid, organic forms and undulating textures create a more relaxed atmosphere, reminiscent of nature," Lena explains.

"The use of natural materials like wood, stone, and linen further enhances the organic feel, making dining spaces feel warm and grounded. Choose frayed linen napkins and furniture that celebrates the natural grain of wood to perfectly achieve a relaxed and laid-back look.”

4. Mediterranean influences

This year's design focus is not purely on Mediterranean garden trends, interiors are also seeking the character of sunnier climes. "Take inspiration from the Med to bring holiday vibes into your home this summer," says Esme.

"This pared-back look uses deep terracotta tones to conjure the image of Mediterranean roof tiles and sun-drenched terraces. Keep walls and big-ticket items neutral, then bring in navy blues and olive greens with boho prints and patterns."

The fun Amalfi decor trend is a great way to embrace bolder Mediterranean colours and signature lemon prints.

5. Heritage country style

Country style is a timeless aesthetic, one that will always be 'on-trend' but every few years certain nuances prove most popular. This year the aesthetic returns to its roots, with less focus on clean modern-country design and more of a shift towards the heritage feel where more is more.

Perhaps it's because of the maximalist approach to design in 2025 or the desire to create a more nostalgic vibe, whichever it is 'Cottagecore' is huge this season.

As is always the way 'cottagecore' was a fashion trend that transitioned to our homes. It's the trend that quite simply leans into all the appeal and comfort of quintessential country design. "The Cottagecore aesthetic is all about embracing simplicity, nostalgia and creating a deeper connection with nature," says Helen Ashmore, head of design at iconic Laura Ashley.

"Evoking the charm of an idyllic countryside cottage, it's all about blending rustic textures, vintage-inspired decor and a soft and warming colour palette. This lifestyle is rooted in the idea of slow living, and appreciating the beauty of everyday life and this design scheme puts warmth, comfort and a sense of history at the forefront.

Whether in a country house or a city apartment, you can bring cottagecore style to any interior by being clever with your design choices. Start by embracing natural materials. Washed woods, linens, cotton and stone are key materials that help to create that sought-after, organic lived-in feel."

6. Scandi sanctuary

Scandi Sanctuary is a Scandinavian evolution for the year ahead. This thoughtful trend sees the pared-back interiors continue to be popular as they take on new nuances, much like Parisian style decor, to provide a timeless look that endures and evolves to stay forever relevant.

"Scandi takes on a new guise this season, leaning into a laidback aesthetic," says Esme. "Swap out stark whites for soft creams, crisp cotton for slubby linens and abstract shapes for fluid forms. Warm up the scheme further with soft sage green accents and wooden furniture – avoid pale woods in favour of honey-toned acacia and mango.

For 2025 the typically understated palette of the best white paints and magnolia paint colours will be complemented by sumptuous materials like warm wood, rich leather, and intricately woven textiles.

7. New Minimalism

The minimal luxe trend continues to go from strength to strength. “We’ve spotted that searches for minimalist decor ideas are surging right now," explains Marie Goodwin, head designer at decorative fabric specialist Prestigious Textiles. "However, amongst our customers and from what we’ve seen at the latest exhibitions and industry events, we know there is a changing approach to minimalist design that places more of a focus on subtle detailing to ensure pared-back interiors still make an impression.”

“Replace pattern with texture and create a layered look with a range of techniques and finishes when it comes to soft furnishings. To ensure a minimalist space retains a sense of comfort and warmth, texture is the best place to start. Incorporate on-trend techniques such as basket weaves, jacquards, and geometrics to add depth and dimension, and contrast with more delicate fabrics like sheers for a balanced look.”

“Choose furniture and accessories sparingly”, says Marie. She continues, “To fully adopt the less is more mentality, I find it easier to remove everything from the room in question and start with a blank canvas. When it comes to adding furniture back in, ask yourself if each piece will firstly match the minimalistic style, and if it is needed from a practical point of view. If not, leave it at the door and don’t be tempted to fill the space.”

“The less is more approach should be carried into all aspects of the design when re-decorating a room that adheres to the rules of New Minimalism. Nature-inspired shades suit the trend particularly well, using muted tones ranging from earthy browns and almond to basil green and soft clays.” Giving the green light for decorating with brown in a minimalistic way.

“Its roots in nature give us something to connect to, as well. When we see light blues like Mellow Flow™, we might think of soothing springs or sunrise skies, for example, or be reminded of the deep ocean’s chilled stillness with a dark blue like Slow Swing™. Whereas Free Groove™ offers a more intense heat, like that of summer pool parties. Some of us are slowing the beat to recharge and find balance, while others are looking to crank up the volume and create spaces that are simply fun," she adds.

Creative bold colours are always fun to fill your home with personality, and this year, it's all about adding character back to our homes.

"Burnt orange is making a comeback, but in a softer, more relaxed way than we’ve seen before. Instead of bright, punchy tones, 2026’s oranges are warm, earthy and easy to live with. Fashion is leading the charge here too - Chanel has used burnt orange as a key shade in its 2026 palette, with designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Christian Siriano also backing richer, rust-inspired tones on the runway," explains Kathryn Lloyd, Colour Specialist at Crown Paints.

“Our Colour of the Year, Burlington Arcade No. 216, captures a key direction for 2026. Homeowners are moving toward richer tones that feel grounding and restorative, and the complexity of this blue-green shade means it can bring warmth rather than coolness," says Dominic Myland, CEO of Mylands.

"Its depth works for colour drenching, cabinetry and cocooning rooms. Pairings like teal with warm stone, clay neutrals or tobacco browns will shape the mood for the year," he adds.

"This move towards more nuanced neutrals reflects growing interest in colours that have a distinctive presence and staying power without shouting for attention like the maximalist palettes of years gone by."

If you're looking to make a style statement, Helen recommends combining Silhoutte AF-655 with a lighter colour or even using it to colour drench. If you're looking to make your home feel cosy, opting for a warmer hue will be a huge help. Especially if you're looking to use earth tones like brown, it's better to choose the richer colours like this one from Neptune.

"Saddle is one of those rare shades that manages to feel both classic and unexpected. It has the richness and depth of a traditional brown, but there's a warmth to it that makes it incredibly easy to live with," says Fred Horlock, Design Director, Neptune.

You may have seen the popular pistachio green colour trend in the past year, and whilst that's not going anywhere, we are seeing more refined shades taking over.

"Soft, muted greens will be one of the standout trends of 2026, with shades inspired by forests, gardens and natural landscapes taking centre stage," starts Victoria Yardley, Founder of eco paint brand Victory Colours. "Mossy tones, eucalyptus greens and herb-like sages are set to replace cooler, sharper hues."

The Living House designers say that storage is a key factor to consider when redecorating a room – arguing that it should be high up on your decorating to-do list along with colour schemes and layout. "Always, always think about your storage as you can never have enough," says Sophie.

"From floral aesthetics to harmonious Japanese styles, Pinterest users have been heading to our platform in search of inspiration to plan how they can incorporate them in their own homes."

Most of the Pinterest trends for 2025 will come as no surprise, as people are leaning into classic, timeless interior choices to create a home they feel happy in. Here are the key design choices to keep an eye out for in the coming months.

1. Cosy lighting

"First up, as the days get shorter and the temperature begins to drop, we’re seeing all things cosy be top of mind," Matt, Pinterest UK's Head of Home says. "From sunrooms to reading nooks, people are creating spaces in their homes to create ultimate comfort and escapism."

It comes as no surprise that interior experts swear by lighting as the number one factor when creating a cosy atmosphere in the home. And with searches for 'cosy lighting' up by 200% according to the trends report, it seems many of us are wanting to prioritise this as we look towards 2025.

To cosy up your lighting ideas, first, be aware of the common lighting mistakes to avoid - mismatched bulb temperatures and ill-fitting fixtures are a no-go. The key with cosy lighting is to incorporate as many light sources as possible into a space, so you can avoid switching the overhead light on.

"To achieve softer, ambient lighting and a cosy atmosphere, think about incorporating warm-hued table lamps and floor lamps to create different zones for reading and relaxing, and use a dimmer to soften overhead lights," says Karen Thomas, Head of Design, Marks and Spencer.

"There is something very nostalgic about this aesthetic that appeals to people," says Sarah Ross, Co-Founder and brand director at Addison Ross. "And it doesn’t require too much upheaval to revamp your space into a floral oasis. Choosing well-selected and positioned accessories can give your room the perfect uplift to execute the floral aesthetic."

Experts are expecting to see florals become especially present in bedroom trends next year, as people continue to use elements of nature to create a calming sanctuary to retreat into at the end of the day. "Scattered placements of floral patterns, flowers and greenery around the room can help contribute to a peaceful, balanced environment," Karen from Marks and Spencer says. 3. Sage and blue colour palettes

When it comes to interior paint colour trends, people are leaning towards soft, calming palettes that don't necessarily stay within the realm of cream and beige. "Serene hues are proving a hit," Matt from Pinterest says.

"Think sage and blue living rooms, dark green bathrooms and moody purple bedrooms - all colours that help to establish a calm and relaxing environment."

With an increase of 570% in searches for 'sage and blue colour palette', it seems this could be a winning combination for 2025. Experts are anticipating that it will become one of the best colour combinations for living rooms, and it's easy to incorporate the earthy tones of this pairing through furnishings and accessories. "Seafoam (+200%) was another shade that is highlighted in the report- and for a good reason too."

Green home decor isn't exactly a new trend, but it seems people are looking to embrace this with open arms next year. Green and all its many variations have the ability to capture serene hues and tranquillity, which is set to be a big interior focus for 2025.

You might want to adopt the forest green colour trend or feel more aligned with softer shades of sage green and mint. Out of all the Pinterest trends in 2025, the beauty of green home decor is that there's so much space for variation. Whether you want to switch up your hallway paint colours or simply swap out your sofa cushions, there are many ways to get on board with this trend.

For example, your living room might need to flip between being a kids' play area in the daytime and a more adult space for watching TV or hosting friends in the evening. If your living room doubles up as a dining room, yoga space and where you hang your clothes to dry indoors, there needs to be space for all of these things to happen.

2. Find your layout

So you've listed all of the functions you'd like the room to deliver, now it's time to work out the layout that will make these functions possible. This is equally important for determining a small living room layout as when applying common bedroom layout rules.

"Pinterest is also a good way to show what you mean to your partner," adds Becky Connolly. "It can help you understand each other better – one client recently said they wanted to use pink, meaning plaster pink, and her husband assumed she meant bubblegum pink. So when she showed him some inspirational images, he was much more on board with the idea.

"Not all of us have a visual or creative brain, and clients might like an image but not know how it could translate into their home, and that's where we come in."

"One key aspect in what causes the onset of SAD is the weather changes," explains Vikas Keshri, clinical director at Bloom Clinical Care Counselling and Therapy Services.

"SAD occurs most commonly during the autumn to winter months when there are decreased levels of sunlight and gloomier skies. Couple this with the colder temperatures, and it predisposes our psyches to delve into the darker, more sombre parts of our minds. Also, our serotonin and melatonin levels are affected by these changes.

"If your interior design does not contrast the seasonal characteristics of gloom and darkness that these months bring, there will be no separation and the effect of SAD could come on stronger," continues Vikas.

When it comes to making a dark room brighter, this doesn't have to involve fitting new windows – sometimes, just a few simple changes can increase the amount of light in your home.

"I find that incorporating natural light is essential, so I recommend arranging your furniture to maximise sunlight intake," says psychotherapist and founder of Uncover Mental Health Counselling, Kristie Tse. "Consider using mirrors to reflect light throughout the space, creating the illusion of a brighter environment."

"Consider moving your workspace or sofa near a window, essentially giving yourself a dose of light therapy," suggests Sarah Jeffries.

2. Decorate with uplifting colours

While you don't want your colour scheme to feel overly chaotic and bright, injecting certain shades into your decor scheme can help with SAD because colour psychology plays a significant role in how we feel in our surroundings.

"Many of us compromise colour to obtain the classy and clean aesthetic," says licensed mental health counsellor Leah Jacobs. "However, this is the main culprit of your home feeling off-putting. Adding hints or small pops of colour can help warm your space up. Pairing a neutral sofa with colourful cushions is a way to honour the clean aesthetic without sacrificing colour."

There are certain happy paint colours for any room that you really should bear in mind when it comes to warding off SAD.

"Green is great for reminding us of nature and making us feel creative, relaxed and focused," says Jasmine Eskenzi. "Pink, according to Feng Shui, soothes and balances various energies and promotes peacefulness. Additionally, just painting a room in colours that you find uplifting can make you feel good."

"Use colours that uplift your mood, such as soft yellows, warm oranges and calming blues," says Tori Hartline. "These can be integrated through wall paint, furniture or accent pieces like throws, cushions and artwork."

"Studies have shown that plants can improve mood and air quality," agrees Gayle Weill. "Choose plants that are easy to care for, such as succulents or snake plants."

"While I’m not the best with plants, I truly believe that for those who are, bringing a bit of nature indoors can help combat the winter blues," says Carolyn Cerminara, founder and principal designer at Cerminara Design. "I always recommend adding a few indoor plants that thrive in low light, like snake plants (one of the best plants to help with condensation in any room.) They add life and energy to a room and can balance the space energetically."

4. Make soft lighting a priority

Just as natural light is important when designing interiors that foster a sense of well-being, so too is your artificial lighting scheme. One of the most common lighting mistakes is the use of unflattering overhead lights.

"Harsh overhead lighting can be overstimulating and may contribute to feelings of discomfort or anxiety," warns Tori Hartline. "Instead, opt for softer, more diffused lighting that creates a calming atmosphere. Use lamps with warm-coloured bulbs to create a cosy ambience. Dimmable lights are also beneficial, as they allow you to adjust the brightness according to your needs and the time of day."

"Good lighting is key; layering your lighting with ambient, task, and accent styles can maintain a warm glow during the darker months," suggests Kristie Tse. "I have found that adding smart lighting options can allow you to adjust the brightness and warmth according to your mood, which is incredibly beneficial."

"Follow the pattern of natural light as much as possible so that your body knows what time of day it is," says Claire Renée Thomas, founder of Reaching My Best.

"For example, use multi-colour LED strip lighting to provide a warm glow to a space in the few hours before bed. This will help your body stay true to its circadian rhythm."

5. Include plenty of personal touches

It is all well and good to put features into place to help ward off SAD, but you need to ensure that they work for you.

"Experts can make research-driven recommendations that increase exposure to daylight, such as arranging seating by windows, using light and reflective colours and installing full-spectrum lighting. However, it is also important to know what both makes you feel better and reduces your stress," emphasises associate professor Eileen Anderson, who directs Case Western Reserve University's educational programs in bioethics and medical humanities.

"Not unlike Dorrine Kondo's tidying question of, 'what brings you joy?' there is substantial individual variation in terms of what will make you more resilient in the winter. Perhaps a special knick-knack reminds you of happy moments with loved ones. Maybe winter decorations lift your spirits. A wall painted your favourite colour could be soothing.

"Taking the time and effort to evaluate your personal feelings, reactions and experiences can help you plan better with what you have," continues Eileen. "Begin by minimising stressors and then cultivate light and joy."

"Your home should be filled with things that bring you happiness," agrees Carolyn Cerminara about the things that give your home personality. "Whether it’s art, family photos, or personal mementoes, these little touches can really lift your spirits during the darker months."

6. Invest in a light therapy box

You may well have seen light boxes being advertised as a way of dealing with SAD and they really are worth considering.

"A light therapy box is a portable lighting device that can be purchased online that mimics sunlight and reduces symptoms associated with SAD," explains licensed professional counsellor-supervisor Megan Torres, who owns Megan Torres Counselling. "According to the Yale School of Medicine, 'exposure to bright light at 10,000 lux for 7 days per week for 30 minutes before 8 a.m. results in substantial improvement in SAD and sub-syndromal SAD for most patients.'"

"Light therapy lamps, or SAD lamps, mimic natural light and can be particularly effective during the darker months," confirms Gayle Weill. "They are designed to offset the lack of sunlight and can be used during morning hours to help regulate your body's circadian rhythm."

7. Create the perfect relaxing environment

Everyone knows that when you feel well-rested, your mood is enhanced so really do make getting a good night's sleep a priority when designing your bedroom and incorporate lots of cosy hideaways – one of the best interior design tips to reset your home for autumn.

Begin by minimising stressors and then cultivate light and joy."

"A well-organised home can significantly reduce feelings of stress and overwhelm, which are often exacerbated by SAD," agrees Tori Hartline. "Regularly declutter your living spaces to create a more open and airy environment. This not only improves the physical space but can also lead to mental clarity and reduced stress."

"Invest in storage solutions that help keep your belongings neatly tucked away," continues Tori. "This could include stylish baskets, shelving units or storage ottomans that double as functional furniture.

"Establishing daily routines for tidying up can help maintain an organised home without it becoming a daunting task. Simple habits like making your bed each morning or tidying up before bed can make a big difference in maintaining a sense of order."

10. Incorporate a 'movement space'

It can be difficult to find the motivation to get outside for some physical exercise when winter hits, yet getting your heart pumping really can help elevate your mood. For this reason, if you are looking at ways to make your home a happier place, it is helpful to find space within your home to get your body moving.

"Physical activity is a powerful tool for managing SAD, as it helps boost mood, reduce stress and improve overall well-being," explains Tori Hartline. Liam explains that while the curtains are chic, they aren't practical enough to justify their inclusion in a busy room. 

"Aesthetically, they’re great, but the same can’t be said for their ability to block sound and light. The poor insulation can lead many people to later regret selecting sheer curtains over block-out or eyelet curtains," He says. 

Those who regret this decision will most likely notice it more when looking to keep a bedroom cool, because the sheer material is not suitable.

3. Light flooring in well-used rooms

When trying to make a small room look bigger, opting for lighter colours can give the illusion of more space. Especially when you go lighter with rugs or carpets, and yet these lighter fabrics can also be a huge challenge to keep clean.

Liam explains, "Purchasing matching furniture sets may seem like a great idea at the time, but, as seen on TikTok, it’s a choice people quickly regret. The lack of personalisation and ability to mix things up leave designers dreading their choice, styles can quickly become outdated, leaving a room behind."

Instead of matching furniture, Liam suggests creating a contrast between your furniture as this will allow you to quickly change up your style should you want to. 

5. Stair runners

A seemingly innocent interior design, stair runners are a great way to add an extra layer of protection and decoration to your staircase. And yet, this one strip of fabric can cause quite a lot of mayhem when it comes to how often you should clean your home. 

"Dust and dirt can quickly collect on either side of the runners, especially on high-traffic areas such as stairs. The runners can also affect balance on stairs - particularly with young children - providing a potential safety hazard. To avoid this regret, I suggest getting the entire stairs carpeted instead, matching the rest of the flooring in the home," says Liam

5 Bedroom layout rules recommended by interior designers

Layout rules can feel a little intimidating, and to be honest, in smaller spaces, there usually seems to be only one possible place for your bed, wardrobe, and chest of drawers to go.

Below, I'm sharing five bedroom layout rules I always recommend clients follow – for a better layout and bedroom that helps them to sleep better, too.

1. Create balance and symmetry

We need our bedrooms to feel calming and cocooning; this is easier when we have created a sense of balance or symmetry. This is because a symmetrical layout makes the room more restful to the eye.

So, look at your room and decide whether the visual weight in your bedroom is balanced or off-kilter. Perhaps you have a cluttered corner, or the bed isn't placed centrally.

Create balance by having two bedside tables, even if you live alone; after all, you can never have too much storage. Go for a bedside lamp or sconce on either side of the bed for a more 'finished' and 'hotel bedroom' feel. When you step back, the room will look much more put-together and balanced and I think this symmetry can also make a bedroom look more expensive.

You can also hang two fairly large, portrait pieces of artwork above the bed. In the bedroom, I love using artwork with horizontal lines, such as landscapes or line drawings, because they create a restful feel by mirroring our position when lying down when we go to sleep, almost inviting us to stretch out and lie down.

2. Choose the right-sized bed

Bigger isn't always better when it comes to buying a bed frame, so measure your space thoroughly and think about walkways before going for the biggest possible size.

This is something I've learned the hard way – I sized down my mattress from a king size to a double but went for a contemporary, black four-poster bed. I love how it looks, but having lived with it, I think a simple, low bedframe with a simple upholstered design would have been more practical in terms of moving around the space easily.

"As tempting as it is to get the largest bed for comfort, it can compromise the space, and you may be left with just a bed in the room and hardly any space to actually walk around the bedroom," agrees Sophie Clemson from interior design company The Living House.

"If you choose a king-size or super king bed, opt for wider bedside tables or even a low chest of drawers. If the bedside tables are a standard size or too small, they will look lost next to the large bed."

Downsizing is not such a bad thing because not only is a smaller mattress cheaper, from the best cooling mattresses to a luxury Simba mattress, so will your best sheets.

3. Make the bed your focal point

Our bedrooms are hardworking spaces, as they are where we sleep, get ready for the day, store our clothes, and sometimes they also double up as workspaces. However, the prime function of the bedroom should be for sleep, meaning the bedroom should be the focal point that draws the eye.

Ensure the bed is the centre of attention by anchoring it with a rug or displaying art, and don't skimp on the cushions and throws, as this will add interest and make your bedroom cosy. "We love to see a rug used in a bedroom; it can really complete the look and bring the room together," says Sophie.

Sophie's top tip is to go large with the rug to make an impact and balance the room. She advises placing a rug at the end of the bed while making sure that it is large enough to cover the width of the bedside tables. Explore how to choose the right-sized rug for any room.

"For a welcoming and inviting feel, place the bed so that it is facing the door to create a focal point and feature in the bedroom. Consider how you could decorate the wall behind the bed; this could be with panelling, a popular choice right now, a large piece of artwork, or wallpaper. If you’re going for wallpaper, don’t be afraid to paper every wall for maximum impact," Sophie recommends.

4. Add plenty of storage

A common bedroom storage mistake to avoid is not making the most of dead space, especially the space under the bed. Under-bed storage is key, whether you are organising a small bedroom or having a bigger space, as it gives you much more room for stowing things out of sight.

Having out-of-season clothes stored away makes it easier to keep your closet organised, with regularly worn items easier to see. Invest in storage boxes to make items easily accessible, and declutter your bedroom periodically to avoid a build-up of excess stuff.

5. Use the walls

Make the most of your vertical space by hanging up rows of shelving (you can either use them to arrange decor, small lamps, and trinkets or use opaque baskets to store day-to-day essentials without the visual clutter).

Built-in cabinetry is also a brilliant option because it will work with the architecture of your bedroom and maximise the available space. By using the walls, you'll end up with more floor space, reducing the need for bulky chests of drawers, which can feel oppressive and disrupt the flow of your bedroom.

Of course, large, high-quality rugs are an investment, but we can also afford to have more of an "easy come, easy go" attitude to rugs and other decor in our homes, which makes the process easier.

1. Choosing a suitable size

You might need a bigger rug than you think for your space, as generally, a room will look more visually balanced when at least the front two legs of your furniture are positioned on top of the rug. This grounds the conversation area in living rooms and makes the space feel more cohesive. 

A larger rug will also help a small living room layout hang together better and make it look like you have enlisted the help of an interior designer. Just check the clearance space under your doors so that your rug will fit without getting caught underneath as you open the door into the room.

"When choosing a rug the most important aspect is to make sure it is the right size," agrees Zara O’Hare, interior design consultant at Land of Rugs. "If you have furniture placed against a wall then I would choose a rug that fits underneath the front legs of your furniture. If your furniture is more centred in your room then I would choose a rug that goes underneath all your furniture, creating a bordered look."

2. Determining a material

It's easy to forget to check what the rug is made from in the product description, but this could mean you end up with something impractical. 

"I think there are a lot of great resources about determining the correct rug size for a space, but there is less about the materials they are made from," begins interior designer Zara Khan. 

"I highly recommend checking how the rug needs to be cleaned before committing to a rug," Zara adds. "I always recommend easy-to-clean materials in the dining room and living room if you have kids." Wool is resilient and stain-resistant, while silk is super soft and often has intricate details. Synthetic materials are more budget-friendly but won't be as durable.

3. Picking pattern

A rug is a brilliant way to add patterns to your space, from big zigzags on a Berber rug to checks, stripes, and geometric patterns. Interior designer Zara Khan shares a useful tip for creating a space that feels curated, and it's all about balancing patterns of different scales. 

"I love texture and pattern and the key to executing it correctly is to use different scale patterns," Zara explains. "For example, if your sofa is more of a texture I think of that as a small-scale pattern. 

I would do a medium-scale pattern on either the rug or throw pillows and then a large-scale pattern on the other. When all of the patterns are the same scale, I think the space starts to look busy instead of collected."

4. Pinpoint the best location

Think about where the rug is going to go before you decide on the style.  A runner rug in the kitchen or hallway needs to be much more hardwearing and easier to clean than an area rug under the bed in your spare room. 

Evelina Juzėnaitė, principal interior designer at Planner 5D, says that if there’s a lot of movement on the rug, you should choose durable materials, and where there is less movement, you can choose a cheaper and less durable option. "For example, under the sofa and in the hallway a more durable rug is needed, unlike the area near an accent chair." 

5. Selecting a shape

A large, circular or rectangular jute rug can totally transform a living room on a budget because it covers a large surface area, making the space feel refreshed. Rugs with rounded edges, be it a circular rug or one with a scalloped edge, is a lovely way to soften a space and offset harsh edges of furniture and the architecture of the room itself. 

Interior designer Evelina Juzėnaitė recommends matching the shape of your rug to your furniture: "Remember, a rectangular rug should go under rectangular furniture, and a round rug under a round table."

Look out for rugs that are hand-made or hand-loomed, as these will be of very high quality. New Zealand wool is considered the best wool in the world.

"The backing of the rug is also important," says Zara O'Hare, interior design consultant at Land of Rugs. "A sturdy backing, typically made from cotton or jute, ensures the rug's shape retention and prevents stretching or warping. Avoid glued-on backings, which are less durable and prone to separation."

Whilst any room in your home can adopt the 'regencycore' aesthetic, we can see this becoming a particularly favourable bedroom trend as well as an increasingly popular living room scheme. So if you're tired of minimalist neutral interiors then you'll certainly be a fan of this decadently decorative look. 

We spoke to interior design experts to discover the key elements of the trend and the foolproof ways to achieve the look in our homes. 

What is Regencycore? 

So what is this royal-ready trend? Aside from ridiculously expensive London townhouses and countryside palaces, there are several ways you can incorporate the 'Recencycore' look into your home without having to be a lady or queen.

"When thinking of ‘Regencycore’ interiors, think rich mahogany furnishings, sumptuous fabrics, heavy trims and intricate mouldings. Regency Interiors take the appealing aspects of ‘Cottagecore’ (the cosiness, the visual warmth, the wooden flooring) and elevate them beyond the farmhouse into something more lavish," explains Louisa Rodgers, a vintage dealer and fashion communication lecturer. 

If you're looking for ways to make your bedroom look expensive then this is the trend for you, it's not only about the lavish bold prints but also the richness in the details. Think intricate mouldings and delicate floral china alongside sturdy rich wooden furniture, the vision of sophistication. 

How to get the Regencycore look 

Now you know what the trend entails, you might be wondering how you can recreate it in your home. The key is to balance regency-core with your modern tastes, if you're into the maximalist decor trend then this balance will be much easier to strike due to the similar lavish aesthetic. 

Here are five ways you can bring the Regency era into your home, unfortunately, the grand parties don't come with the furniture but you can fix that... 

1. Pick a statement piece

"First things first - find a statement piece that acts as the focal point of your space," advises Caron Grant, the brand manager at luxury furniture brand Bridgman. 

"We suggest a bold sofa or accent chair that guides the theme of the rest of your space. Think rich purples and royal blue hues that possess an irresistible air of decadence." 

She also points out that just because something is bold doesn't mean it has to be gaudy, if you want things to stay a bit more understated then Caron says a simple cream or grey upholstery can make a statement when used in a chenille or velvet fabric. 

This statement piece can be a long mahogany dining table, a regal four-post bed with drapes or as small as an armchair. Whatever your budget and taste, finding a piece of furniture to centre your 'Regencycore' around all depends on you.

It's not just big beds and sofas that can achieve the look, considering the smaller details of your space and how you can elevate them is an effective yet budget-friendly way of participating in the trend. 

For example, looking at lighting trends that could work for a Regency-esque space or adding wall panelling to your room will make a huge difference. Georgia Metcalfe, founder of French Bedroom, explains how layering different textures can quickly elevate your space. 

"Mix textures such as velvet, brass, upholstered fabric and handwoven rugs to create an old-worldly feel. Textile detailing such as rope and tassel tiebacks on curtains, or trimmings on cushions are a great way to add interest and detail," says Georgia. 

Why not incorporate the bookshelf wealth trend and upcycle your bookcase? Statement bookcases are a key trend in Regency-era interiors and showing off your impressive cloth-bound classics collection has never been more in style. With the right approach, even a winning IKEA Billy bookcase hack could fit the brief.

3. Invest in a luxurious rug

Not only is a grand lavish rug a great way of incorporating the 'Regencycore' trend it's also one of the best ways to make a small bedroom look bigger. So if you're low on space but want to up the regalness of your room, it's time to invest in a magnificent rug. 

"Heighten humble entryways or bring extravagance to a dining room by pairing natural rugs or carpets with bold colours and lavish patterns," explains Kirsty Barton, brand storytelling manager at Alternative Flooring. 

"Derived from sustainable plant fibres, natural carpets and rugs made from sisal, jute, coir, or seagrass add texture and style in abundance while displaying a sense of regal charm. Providing a hardwearing and elegant flooring option, the intricate weaves and natural shades are sympathetic to the aged materials found in historical homes."

No matter what room you're re-styling, a statement rug with complementary colours and patterns can quickly pull it together whilst also adding another layer of comfort. Especially if you're lucky enough to have hardwood flooring, a plush rug will be a welcome addition on cold mornings.  

4. Go bold with your wallpaper pattern

Whilst you might have shied away from the wallpaper trends in recent years, it's time is come again and the 'Regencycore' trend is a perfect example of that. Gone are the days of simply papering a boring-looking wallpaper over every wall in your room, there are now new inventive ways to incorporate personality and patterns that won't overwhelm you. 

Wallpaper back in the actual Regency era was hard to come by and extremely expensive, but lucky for us that isn't the case anymore. Daniel Bland, renowned gilder and gold-leaf artist, explains, "Luckily wallpaper design and manufacturing has been modernised significantly and the hand-painted effect is easily accessible."

"Opt for Regency-inspired patterns and prints or damask to keep with the period that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home. Combine with panelling and paper on the inside of the panelling so the wallcovering looks framed for added impact." 

He also goes on to point out that wallpapering in Regency style is great as you can opt for a colour palette that reflects your own personality. 

"Go bold with vibrant lavender hues or decadent Royal blues or add an extra luxe feel by choosing a mixed metallic paper to offer the gilded gold edge giving you high-end luxury for less," he says. 

5. Add delicate touches

Once the larger elements of your room have been transformed, it's key to tend to the smaller details as well as add your finishing touches. Just be prepared to relearn how to dust your bedroom with all your new trinkets!.

Georgia recommends investing in antiques or top-quality new alternatives to classic pieces with intricate detailing, hand-carved feminine lines and hints of metallic gold or brass. "You could even add ornate gold picture frames with oil paintings or Renaissance-style art," she says. 

Finding fun quirky ways to add these small details can be all you choose to do, participating in new interior trends shouldn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. 

Picking up some ceramic tea sets, candle holders and figurines at a charity shop or online secondhand shop will allow you to keep the costs down all while transforming your space.

Scent often gets forgotten, but it makes a huge impact on how we feel. So think about adding a springlike fragrance to your living room with new scented candles or oil diffusers to welcome an uplifting atmosphere. "Scents can change the whole vibe of your home – choose the right one, and it can be just as important as your décor in influencing how you feel in a space," says Decorbuddi interior designer Jenny Wood.

"In winter, warm spicy and berry fragrances will set the scene for cosy nights in; but in the spring, swap these for fresh, delicate leafy florals and citrus aromas to give your room a much lighter vibe," Jenny continues. By scent-scaping at home, you can go a step further and create a soothing feel in the bedroom and a welcoming one in the hallway, simply using the power of scent.

In the living room, opt for freesia, rose, vetiver, lemon, orange blossom, lavender, lily, cherry blossom and jasmine.

2. Rearrange your furniture

Moving your furniture around is one of the best ways to transform your living room on a budget, leaving the space feeling totally different. Follow our small living room layout rules, such as avoiding having the back of the sofa facing you as you walk into the room, and think about how you'll be using the space in spring and summer.

"A close-together furniture arrangement that feels warm and intimate in the colder months may not work quite as well when the weather improves," begins Decorbuddi designer Jenny. "Give yourself space to breathe by decluttering, then consider relocating an armchair, table or sofa nearer a window to make the most of the sunshine."

You can also move furniture away from patio doors to improve the flow of your room when they’re thrown open.

3. Swap cushion covers

If you have a lot of cushions in your living room, try taking a few away to make things feel more airy – consider reducing the amount of cushions on your sofa as a starting point. Swap heavy knitted or velvet covers for lighter linens in the light and airy palette of spring.

"Cushions really can make such a difference in your living room and make it feel cosy with their mix of textures and patterns," says interior designer Sophie Clemson from The Living House.

"If you love having a switch up for spring, then take a look at cushion covers rather than purchasing a whole new cushion. H&M Home and Dunelm have a beautiful range of affordable cushion covers – all you need to do is take off your current cushion covers and store them away for winter. It couldn’t be easier, and it's a cheap way to update your living room on a budget."

Interior designer Ilaria Barion says that by introducing pastel accents, such as soft blues, delicate pinks, and muted greens through throw pillows, you can instantly brighten the room and create a more inviting atmosphere without a major investment.

4. Add plants

The best indoor plants bring greenery, texture, and all the happy vibes, breathing life into any space. Plants also provide a visual link with the lush greenery that’s springing up outside your window. Interior designer Jenny Wood says plants go with almost every décor scheme, so you really can't go wrong.

"Pop them in baskets or tactile earthenware pots for a natural vibe, or glam them up with glossy ceramic or sculptural planters," she says.

"Just as they appear in the wild, place your plants at different heights to add interest – on the floor; on shelves and mantlepieces, and up high with plant hangers or by training them along wires across the ceiling."

"You don’t have to spend a fortune either, visit your local supermarket for some budget-friendly plants," says Sophie Clemson. Jenny recommends these easy houseplants to keep alive: Snake Plant, Dracena, Pothos, Zamioculcas Zamifolia and Parlour Palms.

Just be sure to avoid the most common houseplant mistakes, but because plant can can differ wildly from one species to another, knowing how to care for a peace lily will feel like a breeze rather than navigating how to care for an orchid. Ensure you know how often to water your houseplants in question, because dead houseplants are not great for improving decor.

5. Switch out your curtains

"One of the best interior tricks to spring-ifying a room is to swap the curtains," says Jenny Wood. She explains that heavy, lined velvet curtains might be great in the colder months, but in spring and summer, not only will they darken a space and keep the heat in, but the sun’s rays can bleach the colour from them.

By swapping them for cotton, linen, or sheer drapes, you’ll not only freshen up your scheme, but you’ll make both sets of curtains last longer.

"It sounds a faff, but it’s a job that can be done within an hour and will make a huge difference," says Jenny.

"Lighting is also key. Layers of soft, ambient light create intimacy and contrast against harsher overhead fixtures to make the room feel cosy, rather than harsh," she adds.

Embrace one of the hottest wallpaper trends to incorporate an element of decorating with brown without using a colour blocking 'flat' finish. “A great way to select a palette is to bring in a wallpaper with multiple tones in it," says Cathy Dean, founder and CEO of Studio Dean.

"When thinking about a decorating scheme, you need to give it depth, never more true with brown, which is not at its strongest on its own, it needs variation as you see in nature too. A tree’s bark is not just one brown, it has many shades and textures."

"So when decorating with brown, use lots of shades and textures to look natural. Pick a palette of tones of brown, you’ll need four or five shades going from light to dark. “The contemporary way of using the colour is all about layering different tones. When design is approached with tonal layering in mind, it’s easy to see how using brown in schemes can range from a light, brown-toned scheme (think tan variations in a Scandi scheme) to a darker-toned scheme (think Mid-century vibe), advises Karen Robinson, Interior Designer and owner at Ruby Red Interiors.

If dark browns feel scary, you could construct an earthy neutral palette by decorating with magnolia, beige or taupe with a generous dose of creamy caramels and biscuit tones.

Interior Designer and founder of Kensal Interiors, Deborah Cicurel, says, “After years of all things black, brown is finally making a comeback. And hurrah for that because brown in a home represents so many things: warmth, earthiness, nature, safety and calm, to name but a few vital qualities."

"As we move from starker shades such as grey and black, it’s time to embrace brown in its many forms, across the tonal spectrum, from taupe and mushroom to the deepest chocolate shades."

4. Add subtle brown accents

If you’re not ready to colour drench your entire space in opulent chocolate brown or caramel, and you don’t want layers of tonal brown colour, introducing brown accents will give a nod to the colour trend without it feeling overwhelming – for a subtle 'Quiet Luxury' decor.

“If you’re feeling a little tentative about diving into the brown trend, the good news is that brown is a super easy colour to start experimenting with," says Deborah. "You probably already have some brown accents in your home that you hadn’t even thought of, such as vintage wooden trays, brown-patterned cushions, sheepskin throws, jute rugs, woven baskets, rattan chairs, or chestnut-coloured lampshades."

Play with moving objects around where they haven’t been before to start introducing the trend into your space slowly,” she suggests.

Whether you opt for dark wooden candlestick holders for a mantle or light brown accessories to style a coffee table or shelf, there are so many ways to add brown accents to a room.

If you are a fan of the Bookshelf Wealth trend, you might already have shelves adorned with meaningful ornaments so consider moving them around for a fresh feel.

Interior Designer Charley Morgan has this tip for using brown accents to decorate a room, “We incorporate brown tones through the woods and metals we select in our projects to bring warmth to the space. As we find in nature, we use these as our grounding base, then layer colours and neutrals on top to create flexible spaces that can adapt through design trends”.

5. Embrace brown with flooring

Flooring is one of the easiest ways to decorate a room with brown because it’s a practical colour and many of the usual flooring materials like wood and tiles are naturally brown.

Brown flooring doesn’t have to cost the earth (no pun intended) as there are such good laminates and vinyl flooring ranges available these days that you can adopt the look of handmade antique tiles at a fraction of the price.

Natural stone flooring, like the 100-year-old reclaimed French terracotta tiles at Ca'Pietra in the image shown, adds colour and depth boasting numerous shades of brown.

If you are looking for quick, less permanent ways to introduce brown into your flooring choices, why not select a rug or runner? Seagrass and sisal rugs bring colour and texture to the party and are hardwearing for busy family homes. A new rug in an on-trend seasonal shade is an easy way to update your home for spring.

6. Incorporate wood into your interiors

Using wood in your interior schemes is a good way to introduce numerous shades of brown without it feeling overpowering, and there are woods to suit every interior style.

Karen Robinson suggests, “In a Scandi scheme, you’d be considering light-coloured woods such as ash and oak, using them in light fittings, floor lamps and coffee tables, for example. Darker tan / brown colours could be used for the sofa and soft furnishings. A Mid-century scheme would be dominated by darker wood tones, such as mango wood, in the form of sideboards or side tables”.

I like to pick up furniture from charity shops and online marketplaces and change the tone and shade of the wood to suit the room I'm decorating. The DIY distressed wooden bench in the image was a bargain IKEA flatpack that I distressed using tools and stain. It was an easy project to complete in a day, resulting in a bespoke-looking antique-style bench for a bargain price.

Freestanding furniture offers flexibility, meaning you can rearrange room layouts whenever you fancy a change, whereas built-in furniture provides structure and adds character to a room.

Creating the built-in look with an IKEA BILLY bookcase hack is a great way to make a room look expensive on a budget.

7. Layer up the textures

Adding many textures to a space decorated with brown adds interest and prevents expanses of colour from feeling flat – a current key bathroom trend.

To elevate your space, style a sofa or bed with earthy or jewel-tone cushions and opt for varied textures like velvet, linen and boucle. Adding wall panelling to a brown wall adds texture and depth as the light falls across the panelling creating shadows.

I installed picture frame moulding wall panelling on my chocolate-coloured living room wall and love the drama created by the light and shadow. Wall panelling is a great way to make a home look more expensive and also provides styling opportunities for wall art and lighting to elevate the room further.

“Because brown is such an earthy colour, decorating brown-inspired spaces with natural textures such as indoor plants goes down a treat," says Deborah Cicurel. "Brown is also a dream to pair with other colours, as it’s so versatile: depending on your scheme, you could decorate with pinks, burgundies, blues, greens and whites.

Brown may be neutral, but it’s so warm, textured and rich that using it is sure to transform your home into a cosy, welcoming and chic cocoon,"

“With their earthy tones, rich, chocolate browns are a subtle nod to nature and work wonderfully with natural materials such as stone, wood, wicker and rattan finishes,” advises Ruth.

Continuing with this advice, she says: “Deep rich browns work wonderfully as an alternative where you might previously have considered black, charcoal or a dark blue, bringing a restful and warm atmosphere to an interior. Beautifully complemented with textural elements such as wood and clay finishes, muted linens and tactile surfaces.”

“A brown interior colour scheme is surprisingly versatile and not at all as dramatic as it sounds, as there are so many tones that you can ease into,” says Cathy Dean, Founder and CEO of Studio Dean. “Opting for a neutral brown base allows you to have versatility in your home as you can easily bring in other colours and trends.

“Add in a green for an earthy, nature inspired feeling, opt for a pink for a soft feminine space or a navy if you want something a little more bold. For me, I love the combination of deep chocolate brown and pale pink paint colours or earthy browns with a gorgeous deep green. The colours you pair with brown can make or break the look, and Karen Robinson believes that the history of brown colour combinations is to blame for its bad rep.

“Brown has been a much-maligned colour for many decades and I lay the blame firmly at the door of the 1970s. During this decade, we saw solid blocks of mid-toned brown alongside copious amounts of orange, usually in the form of ‘psychedelic’ patterns.” Luckily it doesn’t have to be this way anymore if you're not a fan of 70s-inspired decor.

“Today, we can use brown in our interiors in a thoroughly more thoughtful way,” she advises. “Colours that work marvellously with brown are blush pink, pale olive green and metallics such as aged gold and bronze. Metallic tones work especially well against a brown paint such as Dulux’s ‘Toffee Fingers’. Or you can go full-on old school and introduce the classic orange.”

Interior Designer Charley Morgan agrees that brown is a versatile colour to work with, making it easy to add retrospectively to a room if you don’t want to start from scratch, “ We find there’s a shade of brown to go with every colour, from a warm brass paired with earthy greens to a deep rich mahogany and taupe scheme. And don’t be afraid to mix and match brown shades and textures to add depth and interest to your space,” she suggests.

How do you make brown look good?

The key to making brown look good is to work with the room you are decorating, if you have a small snug with reduced natural light where you want to hunker down and relax then consider colour-drenching it with a dark and comforting shade of deep brown.

Add layered lighting to create the right ambience and style with cosy and tactile soft furnishings for the ultimate relaxing experience. Add your favourite room fragrance and a soft rug to sink your feet into at the end of a long day.

However, if you are working with a light, bright multi-functional room where you don’t want to embark on a marathon paint job, consider layering tonal browns using wooden furniture, and brown accents from ornaments, accessories and soft furnishings.

Consider adding touches of subtle brown by painting the woodwork, for example, the skirting boards, coving and door architraving. This works well with more pared-back and neutral walls and offers many benefits of brown without the full impact.

Deborah has this advice, “There’s no need to be matchy-matchy with browns. Layering different browns on top of each other creates an earthy, grounded and relaxed aesthetic. You could introduce brown subtly to a room, for example, by hanging a few rustic wooden shelves, framing pictures in mahogany frames, adding espresso-hued side tables by a bed or sofa, or by introducing a brown headboard, whether wooden or fabric.”

All colours have both positive and negative traits, so for a successful interior scheme, unsurprisingly, you need to lean into the positives and mitigate or avoid the negatives.

Sounds simple, right?! And it kind of is, the only caveat being that people respond differently to colours, as colour psychology is such a personal thing, making it difficult to compile a prescriptive set of rules. Work to a level of decorating with brown that suits you.

Where we see filled shelves and busy walls with the maximalism trend, the Minimaluxe look is extremely stripped back with more conscious decorations. Decluttering your home is the best way of achieving this look quickly, making sure whatever things you do need in your space are stored neatly and discarded if not completely necessary.

Interior Colour Trends 2025: how to use the hottest hues in your home 

No matter your style, whether you prefer bold maximalist decor or the more hushed tones of quiet luxury, whether you're looking to incorporate a subtle refresh on this year's kitchen trends or a bold new look to overhaul, there's a colour trend for 2025 that's perfect for you.

"This year’s palette is all about comfort, warmth, and natural influences," says interiors designer Michelle Shakallis Johnson MA (RCA). "Whether through rich browns, sun-warmed ochres, or soft olive greens, 2025’s colours create a cocooning yet sophisticated atmosphere – perfect for modern living."

From calming earth tones that invoke a sense of tranquillity to bold shades that make a statement, this year's interior colour trends promise to transform any room in style.

1. Grounding shades of brown

Decorating with brown continues to dominate in 2025, spurred on by Pantone's Colour of the Year 2025 Mocha Mousse and the introduction of Farrow & Ball's new paint colours. “Warm, sophisticated browns are making a comeback, but with subtle undertones of red and mauve, adding a sense of luxury and depth,” says interior designer Michelle Shakallis Johnson.

“These colours evoke feelings of comfort and are easy to live with. They are a warm palette that delivers cocooning, soothing and restful schemes," she adds. "These hues work beautifully in living spaces, paired with velvet textures, dark woods, and soft metallics for an effortlessly elegant look.

For a bold statement, she suggests colour-drenching a room, painting the whole room including the woodwork in these dark, earthy shades.

If you’re worried a whole room in chocolate brown will look too much like a 70s-inspired decor, instead go for furniture, such as sofas or sideboards, in dark shades of brown.

2. Plaster pink

Soft plaster pink is having its moment in the interior spotlight. Calmer than its more vivacious sister – bubblegum Barbie pink – it offers the chance to create a calm haven in your home. Sweet Embrace, Dulux’s colour of the year for 2024, is still one such example of this on-trend warm pink shade.

Designer Matthew Williamson says this shade of pink is a great way to dip your toe into colour. “I love using a soft plaster pink on the walls at home, as it feels like a new neutral,” he says.“Warmer than grey and more interesting than beige, it adds a unique and different element to the space.”

While plaster pink paint colours and accessories make for a great neutral, Matthew suggests using darker, rich shades to bring your interiors alive. “I’d suggest investing in velvet cushions and printed bed throws in rich chocolate, cinnamon and burnt orange,” he advises. Imagine the shades of a beautiful sunset.

“I feel this palette will work well against the soft pink and add warmth to rooms such as the bedroom or lounge. It’s also a versatile combination that works all year round, not just for the colder months.”

3. Uplifting 'sunshine' yellow

This unapologetically bright shade of yellow is certainly not for the faint hearted. Named as the Dulux Colour of the Year 2025, 'True Joy' is set to be the bold new hue to enliven homes where a burst of colour is needed.

"Yellow is an incredibly versatile and warm hue that brings a cheerful energy to any space. It’s an inviting colour that evokes feelings of comfort and optimism, making it perfect for both contemporary and traditional interiors," says Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture Village.

"To style yellow in the home, consider pairing it with neutral tones like soft whites, beiges, or light greys to let the colour shine without overwhelming the room."

"For a more vibrant look, it can be complemented by earthy greens, muted blues, or soft pinks. Yellow works beautifully in kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms, where it can enhance the natural light. For a playful yet refined touch, try using it on accent walls, cushions, or light fixtures. It’s an ideal colour for creating a fresh, uplifting atmosphere while maintaining a sense of sophistication."

4. Dark olive green

Move over sage green and forest green, there's a brooding, dark olive green on the block. "The world of interiors is getting excited for warm earthy colours,” says Ben Thomson, colour expert at Promain Paints. “The trend of green is set to continue with an introduction of deeper tones and in particular olive green.”

"Green remains a favourite, but the cool sages of previous years are evolving into warmer olive tones, often with a hint of yellow for added vibrancy," says Michelle. "These shades bring a relaxed, grounding feel – perfect for kitchens, bedrooms, and natural wood pairings."

This darker hue is a moodier, more sensual twist on the previous green colour trends, so would suit living rooms and bedrooms, however, don’t dismiss the kitchen either. Not only is olive green a good paint colour idea for a kitchen, but it also works well for kitchen cabinets – proven by the Harvey Jones kitchen shown above.

5. Intense red

Scarlet red shades dominated the catwalk this season, prompting us all to search how to wear red, and it’s proving to be popular for interiors as well for 2025. 'Cherry Red' has been named one of the biggest colour trends of the Pinterest Predicts report.

Paint and interior experts alike cannot get enough of using the unexpected red theory for adding flashes of colour into the home. However, if the shade feels too intense to use widely throughout, do not fear because a little goes a long way with working with such a bright primary colour. Introducing small touches of red to a room adds vibrancy and energises the scheme.

“Red looks beautiful as an accent in the deep blue living rooms we’ve embraced, as a flash of cosy colour on large pieces of furniture in the country to farmhouse looks, or as a sexy colour pop in a contemporary sixties space,” says colour enthusiast Annie Sloan.

While it’s a super modern colour, it can be quite overwhelming for those who are colour-averse, we advise using it sparingly to begin with. The trick is to keep it subtle so this bold attention-grabbing colour doesn’t end up dominating the space.

Try using it in unexpected places such as painting the stair risers crimson or placing one red chair around your kitchen table.“Ease yourself in by painting just one piece of furniture and bask in the great warmth, dynamism, and personality it brings to a space," suggests Annie.

"Then, once you’re warmed up, take the plunge and splash around more liberally. This is a fabulous choice in social or active spaces – especially hallway paint colours and dining rooms.”

6. Soft butter yellow

While there's a place for sunshine bright yellow in people's homes in 2025, there's also a demand for softer, less overwhelming shades of the same colour. Therefore, 'butter yellow' is set to be another significant interior colour trend for this year.

"Instead of bold sunshine tones, 2025’s yellow is soft, buttery, and inviting," says Michelle. "This muted pastel shade brings a sense of lightness, working beautifully in modern country schemes."

From paint colours to flooring and even fixtures and fittings – as you can see above from the characterful butter yellow log burner from Direct Stoves, there are so many ways to introduce this sumptuous shade in your home. It's even been named as the KitchenAid Colour of the Year 2025 to welcome it into kitchens.

"Butter yellow carries the bright, uplifting qualities of yellow but with a softer, more subtle presence," says Lena Gierasinksa, head of product and displays at Barker and Stonehouse. "In colour psychology, yellow is linked to optimism and clarity, but when toned down to a butter-like shade, it promotes calm and emotional warmth.

"It’s often associated with nurturing and comfort, making it ideal for creating a peaceful environment. This colour can encourage positivity, reduce stress, and even foster creativity so it’s no surprise that people like to use it in the home.

In spaces like bedrooms or living rooms, butter yellow can evoke a sense of tranquillity while still maintaining a light and joyful atmosphere. It’s a wonderful choice for areas where you want to inspire a sense of ease and connection, without overwhelming the senses."

7. Terracotta

Terracotta is a darker pigment than plaster pink, but it has a softness to it that you can’t get with other darker on-trend shades.

"The influence of nature continues, with sun-baked terracottas, earthy ochres, and delicate clay pinks bringing warmth to interiors," says Michelle. "These colours feel organic and timeless, working beautifully in textured walls, soft furnishings, and statement pieces. Expect to see them in Mediterranean-inspired schemes and modern rustic spaces."

“It is about adding warmth and cocooning within the home for this coming season," says Grazziella Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra. "Terracotta colours are grounding and have a wonderfully calming effect on a space.”

This shade also pairs well with other interior colour trends of 2025 such as olive green, dark blue or biscuit. While it is a statement shade, there are ways of introducing it into your home in more subtle ways, says Grazziela.

“One room where this shade is proving to be popular is in bathrooms, so look to choose a patterned tile that has terracotta tones running throughout it,” she says. “If you do find that this colour suits your space, you can look to then match the colour from your tiles onto your wall.”

8. Comforting biscuit tones

With warm neutrals remaining popular in place of cool shades of grey, this year continues to see a fondness for buttery biscuit beige tones. Less overwhelming than bright red, but with the versatility of grey, biscuit shades add warmth to any interior.

This soft shade is a great accent to use against other on-trend shades such as dark brown or olive green, and it even works well paired with the best white paint colours, offering a soothing sanctuary.

It's a beige that’s anything but boring and this is one colour trend that extends beyond the shade.

“Making way for more characterful tones, I imagine we will see less neutrals such as white, beige and grey being used which can sometimes feel flat and perhaps a little bland,” says Matthew.

Instead of using these cooler tones, Matthew sees warmer colours such as pink, tan, clay, terracotta and peach becoming more popular for interior decoration. Saying: “They instantly warm up and modernise a space, whether used individually or combined in one scheme."

Allison Hughes, Interior Director at Coast Road Furniture, explains that some paint colour trends are known to alter our emotions and mindsets due to the rules of colour theory. “When it comes to sleep environment, certain colours stand out for their ability to induce calmness and relaxation” she explains. 

So what are the forbidden bedroom colours and why should we be avoiding them? According to the survey, the three colours most likely to have a negative effect on our subconscious wellbeing are purple, dark grey and brown.

Not only does each of these colours disrupt sleep but they also bring forward their own individual negative emotions and feelings. So if you want to keep up with the bedroom trends of 2023 but keep your peace of mind you may want to avoid them. 

Using purple in your bedroom, whether on your walls or with the majority of your soft furnishings, can lead to an increase in nightmares. This is because the colour is said to provoke mental stimulation which is the opposite of what we’re aiming for when drifting off to sleep. 

Dark grey is said to emit dreariness and depressing energy. However, there is still hope for a grey colour palette. The survey found that light grey or even silver can be incredibly soothing and sleep-inducing when used in the bedroom. And if you’re looking for how to make a bedroom look expensive on a budget, then light grey may be the perfect calming neutral for you. 

Brown on the other hand is arguably the least surprising when it comes to unfavourable bedroom colour schemes as it was found to create a feeling of sombreness and sadness. For this reason, it's recommended you use softer shades of brown or keep brown shades in your room to a minimum. 

Now we know what colours to avoid, what colours should we be surrounding ourselves with? The simple answer is blue! The colour's positive effect significantly outshone the runners-up, green and yellow. 

Hughes says, “In fact, 58% of Britons with a blue wall colour reported waking up feeling happy and refreshed. The colour blue is said to be associated with calming and soothing feelings, which can even help to prevent nightmares.” So if you're looking to create a tranquil, sleep-inducing oasis, blue is the way to go. 

If on the other hand, cool and calm isn't what you're going for and you're looking for how to spice things up in the bedroom, then the colour red may be more your speed. It has the opposite effect to blue as it provokes feelings of passion and romance when used in moderation.
