When I heard that Simba had launched a new range of bedding, featuring six different fabric collections, I was immediately intrigued.

Having fallen hook, line, and sinker for a Simba mattress that I reviewed for our best cooling mattresses buying guide, I was curious to see whether the same level of comfort and attention to detail that had wowed me would carry over to something as, well, boring as bed sheets.

I'm obsessed with the Simba Hybrid Luxe mattress and love the idea of making my bed feel like a five-star suite, but bed sheets are one thing I’ve never got excited about, nor been inclined to spend a fortune on. With three children and a guest room, there's usually five sets of bedding in rotation in my house at any one time, so practicality has always taken priority over luxury. I’ve owned plenty of bog-standard bedding over the years, and none of it has ever made me rethink my entire bed linen collection - until now.

Initially tempted by Soft Muslin, I settled for the heat-regulating Cool Linen set for this review. A blend of linen and Tencel, it promised breathability, softness and a more regulated sleeping temperature.

I took delivery of a Cool Linen Bedding Set - supplied by Simba for testing purposes - and committed to sleeping on it with my husband for this review. I noted all the key features of this bedding, such as its moisture-wicking and heat-regulation properties, and set out to discover whether it delivered on Simba’s promises.

Simba Cool Linen Bedding: First impressions

I’m fussy when it comes to temperature at night. I’m perimenopausal, so prone to night sweats. At the same time, I have an underactive thyroid, which means I feel chilly most of the time – and I hate being cold in bed.

That puts me in an awkward position when it comes to bedding. I want warmth and cosy comfort, but I also need breathability. Most bedding – just call me Goldilocks – is either too warm, too cool, or just not quite right.

I currently sleep on brushed cotton bedding from Dunelm with a washable wool duvet from The Woolroom, both of which I’m very fond of. But as summer and heatwave season arrived, I started to find my usual setup too warm.

The challenge is finding bedding that strikes that balance between comfort and temperature control. And because I’m so attached to what I already have, I wasn’t in any rush to change it.

But the moment I unwrapped Simba’s Cool Linen bedding, I understood what I had been missing.

I hadn’t planned to put the bedding on the bed straight away, but I ended up doing so because it was so inviting straight out of the packaging.

The first surprise was how soft the fabric felt. I’d expected something closer to traditional linen – slightly crisp, maybe even a little stuif – but this was remarkably soft and comforting to the touch.

It also has a lovely, lightweight quality, too. Changing a king-size duvet cover is never a task I look forward to – but this seemed extra easy to pop on. The fabric is light to handle, and there was plenty of room inside the duvet cover and pillowcases, so nothing felt tight, awkward or overstuffed. Yet neither did the duvet swim around inside the cover.

One tiny complaint – I find buttons on duvet covers a bit fiddly, and I think I would have loved this even more if it had avoided them altogether.

Simba Cool Linen Bedding: Comfort and performance

That first night, I couldn’t wait to climb into bed - this bedding is seriously inviting.

I kept my brushed cotton fitted sheet in place, as I was testing the Bedding Set (£229, King size), which includes the duvet cover and a pair of pillow cases – although a full Bedding Bundle is also available, and that includes the fitted sheet.

The duvet cover felt cool without being cold against my skin, and the fabric was exceptionally soft but not clingy. There was no period of adjusting that you often get with new bedding – it was just like slipping into hotel bedding that's so good, it makes you want to check the label to see where it’s from.

Most importantly, the Cool Linen bedding seemed to help regulate temperature in a way that suited the quirks of my inner thermostat. I didn’t wake up feeling too warm, but I also didn’t feel chilly in the way I usually do with lightweight bedding. I honestly didn’t think bedding existed in this sweet spot, but here it is.

Simba Cool Linen Bedding: Who would it suit?

It’s the blend of linen and Tencel that seems to be the key to how well Simba’s Cool Linen bedding performs.

Linen is naturally breathable and cooling, but it can sometimes feel a little rough, particularly when used for bedding. Tencel, by contrast, is exceptionally soft and excellent at wicking moisture away from the body.

If, like me, you’re a bit of a mixture of temperatures – or you’re dealing with hormonal changes or health conditions that can affect your body temperature at night – I think you’ll find this fabric combination nothing short of magical. Soft yet cool, and cosy yet breathable, it sounds almost contradictory, but that’s exactly what Simba has managed to achieve.

It also makes an excellent choice for in-between seasons, when heavier bedding feels too warm but summer sets still feel a little too light.

Something unexpected that I’ve come to appreciate bout this bedding is its relaxed appearance. It has a sort of 'artfully crumpled' look that feels unfussy, and it doesn’t need ironing, which I also love, because life's too short for that.

Somehow this bedding makes the whole room feel calmer and more inviting – but if your bedroom vibe is more starched sheets and the curated perfection of an interiors magazine, you might prefer the crispness of Simba's new Cotton Percale or the silkiness of its new Egyptian Cotton bedding range.

I’ve always thought of Simba as a brand that has perfected mattress design. What I didn’t expect was for that same expertise to translate so well into bedding.

I say that from a slightly unexpected angle — my mum’s. I’m a self-confessed hot sleeper, but these sheets were so cooling, they were actually too much for me. I passed them on to my mum, who deals with night sweats, and I’m pretty sure she’d wrestle me if I tried to take them back. You get the luxury experience right from the very beginning with Ethical Bedding. Their Eucalyptus Silk Sheets come in, you guessed it, eucalyptus silk drawstring bags. I opted for an all-white set, because that's my kind of style, but you could choose to mix and match between their classic colours: pink, blue, green, grey, pastel yellow.

The bags are embroidered with what's inside, making laundry storage both easy and tidy. It made sorting my bed set-up out positively breezy. I kept my fingers crossed that things would stay that way. You will see that it looks a little crumpled around the creases, but these dropped out in a matter of hours.

Who would it suit?

Ethical Bedding's Eucalyptus Silk Sheets are brilliant from a few different perspectives: they're the most cooling sheets that I've ever slept on; they're ultra natural and gentle on sensitive skin; they have great eco-credentials; and the fibre is a plush, soft alternative to silk. If you fall into any of those categories, you can get very excited about sleeping in these sheets.

We can start with the cooling properties. You've probably already come across eucalyptus fibres in your clothing. It goes by the name Tencel Lyocell. Now you know it, you'll see it everywhere, especially at brands such as The White Company. The reason people love to wear (and now sleep) in eucalyptus threads is that it has two key properties that are really effective for cooling: the fibres are open and really breathable and they're moisture-wicking too. That's a dynamic duo that all hot sleepers can rejoice sleeping in. As I said, these sheets so cooling I actually got too cold sleeping in them.

Now, we can move onto the natural aspects of the sheets. You spend one third of your life asleep, so it makes sense to try to steer clear of nasties and unnatural fibres. Ethical Bedding says "we use eucalyptus that's grown using 95% less water than cotton, no farmable land, and zero herbicides or pesticides. It's naturally hypoallergenic, resistant to bacteria growth and has the same sleep benefits as conventional silk." The fibre is oeko-tex certified, all the dyes are natural and plant-based, and every aspect of the sheet (even down to the button) is biodegradable.

This stems off the natural benefits of eucalyptus, but opting for this instead of bamboo is proving to be a popular choice for the eco-conscious. Ethical Bedding harvests eucalyptus plants (rather than uprooting them); they don't use pesticide sprays; and they make sure to have carbon neutral delivery. There's even more on their website, but I've pulled out the headlines.

Aside from all that, eucalyptus is also a fabulous alternative to silk. Not only is it vegan-friendly, it's much more affordable than silk and you can be a bit rougher with it. So, if you're looking to curate the luxury sleep experience, but you're also working on a bit of a budget, this is perfect.

What is it like to use?

The sizing for Ethical Bedding's Eucalyptus Sheets is spot on. I have a king size bed and this fitted comfortably over all my pillows, duvet, and mattress. The aspect that I was most worried about was my mattress, because I have a thick mattress as well as a 6cm deep topper, but the base effortlessly wrapped around that, with the elastic drawing all of the sheet nicely taut over the base.

My Oxford pillowcases slid perfectly around my plump pillows, securing themselves wonderfully. I move around a lot in the night, but they remained smart, plump, and crease-free. As for the duvet, the corzo nut buttons kept the duvet cover subtly sealed. There's plenty of material to play with, if you want to tuck your buttons inside or outside your duvet and I really didn't struggle putting everything together. The whole bed looked tidy and smart after I had finished.

I gave you a bit of a spoiler for what the Ethical Bedding Eucalyptus Sheets are like to sleep on, because I said they were too cooling for me. They really are. I consider myself a hot sleeper, so often opt for linen over any other material, so switching into the silky texture for Eucalyptus immediately had my skin glowing (in the good way). The fibres feel like silk, which can make them almost slippery to some people, but for me, it just meant they were really cool.

I'm known to wake up from getting hot, at least once in the night, but with these I was walking up cold. I was piling the duvet over me, which is impressive from a cooling perspective, but not quite ideal for me. I handed these over to my mum, who regularly struggles to sleep from her night sweats and she loved them. She said, "I've slept on bamboo sheets before, but they were too slippery, so I ended up on linen. This is the perfect balance of the two: it's cooler than my linen sheets, but a bit softer with more sumptuousness than bamboo, which was incredible."

She's told me since that these are the coolest sheets she has tested so far. She's my partner in crime for all our bedding tests, so that is quite the compliment. She said she didn't wake up in a sweat at all and didn't feel the need to switch out any of her bedding when the weather warmed up.

Cleaning

Ethical Bedding, as you might expect, are really good for their aftercare. The sheets are all biodegradable and gentle on the skin, but you don't have to be too gentle with them in the wash. These are colourfast and machine washable, so you can load them in and set the machine running. I would recommend washing them at 30 degrees with an eco-friendly laundry detergent, such as Ecover or Method. You can see on the label above that Ethical Bedding recommends avoiding fabric softener as these are soft enough already. I can testify that they really are. You'd be on a relative slip and slide if these were any softer.

You'll also see that Ethical Bedding recommends air drying sheets, which I second. Of course, that's not possible for everyone, but if you have a clothes airer and a warm day, make use of it. Your sheets and bank balance will thank you for it.

As for the colour and size, I tested the white, so didn't need to worry too much about the colour running or about shrinkage. However, if you opt for the blue or green colourways, Ethical Bedding uses plant-based all natural dyes that I'm told don't run. That's not just from the brand, reviewers say the same too. My sheets stayed the same size, wash after wash, so you can really rest easy from a longevity perspective.

How does it compare?

I'll admit that I was initially very reluctant to swap over to Ethical Bedding's Eucalyptus Silk sheets. I had just settled into my dream "French Girl Sleep" routine with Soak&Sleep's French Linen Bedding Set. As a hot sleeper, the linen strikes the perfect spot of being soft against my skin and cosy, whilst still regulating my temperature and keeping me cool. I ended up preferring the texture and softness of the linen against my skin, but, as I said, when I handed these over to my mum, she preferred the extra-cool, slippery, silky feel.

If you like the idea of that silky feeling, you can take it one step further and opt for Panda London's Bamboo Bedding. This is even cooler and even silkier than the Eucalyptus Silk, so if you are after extreme cooling power, these will do the job. They definitely take some getting used to. Lots of people feel like they're sliding out of bed when they first try these, but if you can adjust, they're really good.

Should you buy it?

If you're a seriously hot sleeper and you're looking for some light, icy relief, these are the perfect sheets. They're soft to touch and gentle on your skin, whilst feeling plush and luxurious too. The fact that I found them too cooling is a testament to just how effective these sheets are.

What was the The Fine Bedding Company Silk Pillow like to sleep on?

I've mentioned already that I am a hot sleeper, with sensitive skin, and frizzy hair, so you can only begin to imagine how hopeful I was when I found the Fine Bedding Company’s Boutique Silk Pillow. I've been sleeping on it for a couple of weeks, alternating between using a cotton pillowcase and a silk pillowcase.

The first thing I noticed was just how soft this was to lie my head on. The pillow itself is really lofty and plump, but you get that wonderful, hotel-style sink-in feeling when lying on it.

I switch between lots of different positions when I sleep, but I found that I was more often on my back or side (instead of my front) with this one, just because it's more comfortable. From a skin and hair perspective, I found better results when I used my silk pillowcase over my cotton one, but that's no surprise. Generally, my hair was a lot smoother (and less frizzed up and bed-heady) in the mornings and my skin actually wasn't as dry as it can be. So, if I can go off a few weeks of sleeping, this delivers on its promises.

To pressure test the cooling technology, I handed this over to my mum, who suffers from night sweats. She is the one who gave me my curly (I call it frizzy) hair and so I thought she would be a great person to test it. After her first night of sleeping on the pillow, she called me and the first thing she said was "did you say it's a pillow that luxury hotels use?" I wasn't sure which direction our conversation was going in, so I dragged out a hesitatnt "ye-es". Apparently she already knew that it was because her sleep was such a treat. I got a long string of sentences about how soft and comfy the pillow was. And, whilst it wasn't the most cooling pillow I've handed her, she said it still did some work towards keeping her skin feeling more refreshed when she woke up.

What is it like to sleep on?

Online, Soak & Sleep has a whole Bed Linen Care Guide, but I'll summarise it for you here. First, they recommend pulling back your duvet to air your bed while you're getting ready (this lets moisture evaporate). Next, they recommend washing your sheets every week at 30-40°C with a powder detergent. Although, if you have coloured linen, they recommend finding a gel that's suitable for coloured sheets. What they really recommend avoiding is a stain remover or brightener, because "they create an optical illusion that changes the appearance of the colour." They add "creams and face washed contain chemicals that will bleach your bed linen, such as benzoyl peroxide."

If you can, Soak & Sleep suggests air drying your washing, but it can be tumble dried on a lower setting although, they add an extra tip to "remove your bed linen from the dryer while slightly damp if you want fewer creases."

Soak & Sleep also say that all their bedding has been "tested with focus on colour fastness, durability, and washability," which will be reassuring if you buy some brighter sheets and you're not sure which wash to pop them in.

How does it compare?

I’ve tried both Soak & Sleep’s and Piglet in Bed’s French linen bedding, and while they’re similar in quality, they offer slightly different experiences. Soak & Sleep’s linen feels a little more rustic and weighty—beautifully breathable and perfect if you love that natural, lived-in look. It softened nicely after a few washes and feels incredibly cosy. Piglet in Bed’s, on the other hand, has a slightly smoother, more refined finish straight out of the box, and the colour palette feels a bit more curated and trend-led. Both are lovely, but I’d say Soak & Sleep is great for everyday comfort at a slightly more affordable price point, whereas Piglet in Bed feels a touch more luxurious.

Should you buy it?

If you want some simple, luxurious linen, this set is hard to beat. I was sleeping in these every night until my mum commandeered the sheets. I actually can't tear them off her bed, so will be placing another order soon.

The supermarket’s new sleep collection dropped online on Sunday, and it’s already causing a stir with its combination of comfort, quality, and classic Aldi affordability. The range includes plush duvets, mattress toppers, mattress protectors and pillow packs – all priced far lower than their high-street counterparts.

You'll notice that these are from a brand called Slumberland. If you've never come across them before, you're in for a treat. The British brand has been running for over a century (they were founded in 1919) and they're famous for offering quality sleep products at a reasonable price tag.

I first found them when I was buying an electric blanket, but they make some of the best mattress toppers and protectors on the market, which come with anti-allergy fillings, temperature regulating properties, and ergonomic support. And, if Aldi runs out of stock, you can find their products at trusted retailers such as Next, Bensons For Beds and Amazon too.

What's in the collection?

Slumberdown's Anti-Allergy Sleep Collection is thoughtfully designed to provide a healthier and more comfortable night's rest, especially for allergy sufferers. I love cotton sheets: they're soft, breathable, and make the perfect cocoon to slip into at the end of the day. And, of course, TOAST's Rowan Print Bedding is crafted from 100% organic cotton poplin, which has that heavy, luxurious feel that only the best hotel bedding comes with.

On one side, you'll see a sheet that's spotted with a charming, screen-printed dot pattern — inspired by rowan berries — it's delicate with a touch of nature-inspired elegance. If you turn it inside out, you'll see a classic, fine stripe design, which looks great if you want subtle styling in your room. I think everyone should have at least one set of stripy sheets, because they're so great for disguising minor wrinkles and wear. It's a cheat's way to making your bed look put-together.

Who would it suit?

TOAST's Rowan Print Bedding is perfect if you want a timelessly elegant set of bedding that's a little different from your basic white sheets. The delicate rowan berries on one side and fine stripes on the other have very different feels: one very natural, and one very classical, so you will almost have bought two new sets by investing in just one.

Organic cotton yarn is a go-to for those who need something that's durable, good quality, and cooling too. The thicker fibres are heavier than linen, but they didn't keep me too hot at night, which is a plus for hot sleepers.

Of course, these are expensive, in comparison to other sheets. However, they feel like good quality, weighty, and durable sheets, so if you're open to splurging a little, you'll reap the rewards of the extra spend.

What is it like to sleep on?

TOAST sends their bedding in beautiful bags. These are crafted from the same cotton poplin, so you can use them to store your sheets, spare bedding, or for anything that you’d normally allocate a drawstring bag for. I can see them being used for gifting.

The TOAST Rowan Print Bedding comes pristinely ironed and in perfect condition, ready to lie across the bed. I could feel the crisp, delicious sheets and — quite frankly — I didn’t wait until the evening to snuggle up in them. They were too inviting to resist.

I have a king-sized bed and standard pillows, so I bought the duvet and pillows accordingly. The sheets fitted perfectly around all four corners of both, with neat envelope fastenings on the pillows and the duvet fastens with delicate buttons. This means it’s easy to make up and strip the bed, but the sheets also stay in place in the night. I move around a lot in my sleep, but the snug, secure fit meant that everything stayed perfectly in place. What else would you expect?

The first night that I climbed into my pristine TOAST Rowan Print sheets felt like a treat. They look and feel exactly like the kind of cotton you’d get in a luxury, boutique hotel. And let me tell you, that doesn’t change with time. These maintained a beautiful balance of crisp, clean lines and soft, gentle fabric. They’re a joy to sleep in, whether you have sensitive skin and high standards for your sheets, or whether they’re your first expensive set.

Cotton is well-known for being a great material if you need to be kept cool and, as a hot sleeper, I wanted to really put this to the test. I’ve had three months of sleeping in these sheets and have marvelled at how cool they’ve kept me. Of course, slippery bamboo sheets are even cooler, but these balance comfort and temperature regulation like nothing else.

Cleaning

Sometimes, expensive sheets can be a bit fiddly to wash, but TOAST has kept things really easy. They recommend a simple machine wash, at 60ºC, on a gentle cycle. Mine washed and dried really easily and the buttons were unaffected, even by my vigorous washing machine.

Sustainability

I don't always add a sustainability section to my bedding reviews, but when a brand has done a lot of work behind the scenes, I like to shout about it.

Cotton can be difficult to buy sustainably these says, but TOAST has a commitment to sustainability, which they call their Social Conscience Report. They say "every product we make is created from the hard work of many hands and we aim for each one to be responsibly made. We focus our efforts on the areas we believe will have the biggest impact. Our social conscience framework covers three key areas: cherish materials and make; minimise waste; enrich and educate." It's nice to know that you're sleeping on sheets that both feel and do good.

How does it compare?

Luxury bedding can be hard to choose between, would Piglet and Bed be a better bet? Or Rowan and Wren's? I love them both, but they offer something very different. What's special about TOAST's Rowan Print bedding is that it balances that delicate, elegant style with some homeliness too. If you want luxury bedding that's lighter than the heavy, cotton poplin of TOAST, Piglet In Bed's linen is perfect. They have lots of style options and the linen feels lighter and softer against your skin, especially if you get night sweats.

Alternatively, if you want crisp, cotton bedding, The White Company is another competitive place to shop. Their price points are lower and, whilst you won't have colour options, I can't fault them. My family and I have had their bedding for decades and it's lasted really well. I'll let you know how things go with the TOAST Rowan Print Bedding, but so far, so good.

Decorating the house this weekend included swapping the kids' bedding over to festive styles, and seeing their excitement made me want in on that action. So off I went to have a look for some festive bed sheets for the grown-up rooms, not holding out much hope of finding something affordable and suitable for year-round use.

The first place I headed to was our round-up of the best Christmas bedding sets, and it took approximately two minutes to find exactly what I was looking for (thanks, guys). If you haven't seen, Dunelm has one of the best ranges of festive bedding right now – but this joyful Gnome Fairilse duvet and pillowcase set is the one that really caught my eye.

While I was initially looking for how to decorate a guest bedroom at Christmas, I'm unapologetic about keeping this set for myself. Not only is the fairisle design totally on trend right now, it has a reversible design, both of which have a festive feel, but you could easily use outside of the Christmas period. And it gets better, the price is amazing - starting at £10 for a single set, going up to just £16 for super king.

Piglet In Bed's Gingham Linen Blend Bedding gave me the best night of sleep I've ever had. It's cosy, breathable, all-natural, and super soft. Whilst it might be on the pricy side, with their Black Friday sale in full swing, you can buy my favourite pieces for a deep discount. 

Once upon a time, all bedding was made from linen (derived from the flax plant). This beautifully soft, naturally breathable yarn made sweet dreams easy to achieve. However, over the last year, the price of linen shot up and so has demand, making it tougher and tougher to find the sheet spot (sorry) for the best bedding. 

Just when I'd lost hope in finding my dream bed linen, I stumbled across Piglet In Bed. The brand was only founded in 2017, but they've taken the world of sheets by a storm. My wish for soft, breathable bedding — an easy way to make your home cosy — has been granted, over and over again. 

With the help of this magical brand, I’ve finally enjoyed a refreshing night's sleep in some cosy sheets. I got my happy ever after and you can get the same for £50 less.

Whilst I do love a completely coordinated look, Piglet In Bed encourages a mix-and-match approach. Have a scroll through their offering, because there are some deliciously cosy, seasonal block colours as well as some other gorgeous designs.

The details

Who would this suit?

All of Piglet In Bed's linen has this irresistible countryside charm about it. I've seen lots of people label the rustic colours and soft sheets 'cottagecore' and they're spot on. The low-maintenance bedding looks great unironed and goes beautifully with warm, homely colours. If you're looking for something cozy, you won't find better designs than Piglet In Bed's.

On a more practical level, they use a cotton-linen yarn blend which is perfect for hot sleepers or those with sensitive skin. I'll go into more details of why they might choose a blend, but essentially, you get to keep the gorgeous feel of linen, but without having to pay a crazy amount for it. All of the dyes are free from harmful chemicals and the bedding is OEKO TEX 100 certified, which means that your sheets will be pure enough for even the most sensitive sleeper.

While we think about who this suits, there is the inescapable matter of price. Whilst Piglet In Bed do sit firmly in the luxury category, but I don't think it's actually too difficult to justify the price tag. Linen and cotton are really durable threads, especially when they haven't been bleached or treated overly harshly. That means that these sheets could be a lifetime investment for you, meaning they work out as a bargain. Given that there's a Black Friday sale on, there's never been a better time to upgrade your bed linen.

If you need a little more tough love on investing in your linen, with bedding, you really get what you pay for. High-quality linen will stay breathable, strong, and beautiful for a lot longer than your polyester sheets. If you have night sweats, you really should invest in some naturally breathable bedding. You'll get better sleep and have a much nicer time sleeping on these. And, I really think sleep if worth it. You spend the equivalent of two whole days a week asleep, which is worth a lot, if you ask me.

What is the composition and why does that matter?

The Piglet In Bed Botanical Green Gingham Sheets are crafted from 55% European linen and 45% long staple cotton. Both linen and cotton bring beautifully breathable, naturally moisture-wicking qualities to the table. There was once a time when the brand crafted their sheets from 100% linen, but they’ve made the switch for a few reasons. 

For one, if you mix linen with cotton, you get to enjoy the effortlessness of linen, but with the softness of cotton. You'll have probably already experienced the scratchiness of fresh linen, which, softens wash after wash. When you blend linen with cotton, the rewards are instant: your bedding is soft but still breathable. Bibbidy bobbity boo. 

The second reason that this is a blend, I imagine, is price. Linen is only getting more and more expensive, especially if you want the ultra-durable, premium European flax linen that these bed sheets are made of. To keep these sheets in the realm of affordability, the brand has made the swap and I think they did us all a few favours in so doing.

Piglet In Bed go a long way towards nurturing all of these properties, so they pre-wash the sheets to keep them extra soft on the bed. They also make sure that the cotton and linen is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Certified, which is a business award code for super high quality and safe for sleeping on (you'd be horrified at the chemicals that some brands use).

There are some other aspects of the sheet composition that I think ought to be shouted about. All of the bold colours are created without the need for any harmful chemicals and dyes, so the sheets are as safe for your little piglets as they are for the, erm, pot-bellied older pigs of the family. The buttons are made from coconut shell, a sustainable alternative that's considered to be better for the forest than any other options. Piglet In Bed doesn't really shout about this (they're too modest), so I've taken my turn to.

Unboxing

If you haven’t already guessed, almost everything about Piglet In Bed makes me feel like I’m living in a fairytale. When the green gingham bedding arrived on my doorstep, I had to stop myself from looking around for the stork that dropped it off.

All of Piglet In Bed’s packaging is sustainable, thoughtful, and beautiful. My cardboard box was lined in a light pink, offsetting the gorgeously rich colours and print of this set. The duvet cover and pillows come folded and wrapped in twine with a nice note (that I’m promised gets sent to every customer) thanking me for joining the Piglet In Bed community. It’s a choice that I certainly don’t regret.

The bedding feels nice and thick, almost like flannel, but it’s a little lighter. I just knew it was going to be a dream to sleep on, but I had to pace myself. There are lots of other nice touches that need to be appreciated before I can get my sleeping beauty on.

How does it fit on the bed?

Making the bed can be a workout in and of itself, but with the soothing softness of these sheets, I was ready to curl up in them right away. I have a king-size bed, so chose the relevant duvet and pillowcase set. 

You’ll be pleased to know that the duvet is generously sized, so you won’t need to fight to fit even the plumpest duvet into its sheet. Once you've got the duvet in place, there are some gorgeous, yet durable wooden buttons at the base of the sheet, securing your duvet in place. I was concerned that the extra fabric that made it easy to make the bed could leave my duvet a bit lumpy and sparse inside overnight, but it didn’t. My duvet stayed looking (and feeling) fresh, night after night. I would have expected nothing less from my fairytale brand.

The pillows are held in place, envelope style, which is a classic. These easily encased the pillows, even my thicker ones, leaving my bed looking irresistibly cosy and yet smart at the same time. It’s magical. 

What is it like to sleep on?

I’ve already alluded to the fact that the sheets stayed in place and that the composition is pretty Goldlocks-style-perfect, but I have to give you some more details. I just can’t resist. Piglet In Bed has somehow managed to create a material that feels soft and thick, like flannel, but which is also breathable enough to sleep under. 

I’ve had the pleasure of using these from the transition between summer and winter. When we were facing heat waves, I used the duvet cover as a sheet, without any of the actual duvet filling inside. It felt cool to touch and was naturally breathable enough to keep my skin feeling fresh, even if I got hot in the night. 

Then, as a nip came into the air, I brought my duvet out of the cupboard and stuffed it inside the sheets. This feels (and looks) cosy, keeping me warm, night after night, So, it’s fresh, but cosy, soft, yet durable, and effortlessly stylish. Is it magic? Possibly. Is it perfect? Definitely. 

How to clean the bedding

Doing the laundry is never the most exciting part of all this, that award goes to the sleeping. However, it's important that you know how to wash your bedsheets to keep them fresh and to make them last longer too. 

Piglet In Bed has, very kindly, written a complete guide on how to wash bed linen, so I followed this like it was gospel. I washed the sheets at 40 degrees, which the brand says is "warm enough to remove dirt and natural body oils and less energy consumption than higher washing temperatures". They recommend choosing a detergent that matches your bedding i.e. don't use a brightening detergent on coloured bedding. I always use Ecover, since I know that this is gentle on the fibres, the planet, and my skin, so it feels like a good all-rounder. It did a great job in the wash and, even though Piglet In Bed don't recommend using fabric softener, this dried really naturally fluffily, if that makes sense. 

In the summer, I was drying these sheets outside, again, because it's better for the fibres (and my bills). However, Piglet In Bed say that these sheets are fine to tumble dry on a low setting or on a heated airer. 

I actually didn't iron my sheets either, even though I'm a religious ironer of cotton. I liked the way that these fell naturally. The creases felt very authentic, without looking unkempt or scruffy. It's a cosy aesthetic.

How does it compare?

I'm yet to find a linen set of sheets that feels as luxurious as Piglet In Bed's bundle. However, I am also painfully aware that luxury doesn't come cheaply, especially if you're used to sleeping on polyester, or even cotton. Having done some digging around, I have to say that Dunelm's Linen Duvet Cover Set is a great, cheaper alternative. The simple range of designs looks really stylish and I think it could stand up against most of the other premium linen brands out there. 

The Dunelm set is just as low maintenance and lovely as Piglet In Bed's. In fact, it's actually 100% linen, rather than a cotton blend, which some people might prefer. Most of the sacrifices that you make are invisible: your linen isn't European, the dyes aren't natural, and your sheets won't be pre-washed. Most people can live with that, I think.

If you like the sustainable credentials of Piglet In Bed and you don't want to sacrifice on those, Rise & Fall's linen is about £60 cheaper (I know, it's still expensive). The brand offers elegantly luxurious, 100% European flax linen that only gets softer and softer with each wash. The brand is certified as a B Corp, which means that it's met some seriously high standards for social and environmental performance, including the fact that Rise & Fall only use renewable energy in its production process. The difference between this and Piglet In Bed is really only aesthetic and that these sheets come up ever so slightly bigger.

Should you buy it?

With a Black Friday sale live right now, you're not going to find a better price or time to invest in some linen. Those suffering from night sweats, skin sensitivities, or a restless interior design eye will love these sheets. I wouldn't regret buying these at full price, so the only thing you'll kick yourself for is missing the sale.

How we test

At woman&home, all of our experts know that a sweet night of blissful sleep doesn't happen by chance. That's why all of our expert testers are sleep-geeks, who live to sleep and sleep to live.

Before I even started sleeping on these sheets, I did a lot of research. I went into the Bath store and spoke to the staff about the sheets. I quizzed other pattern cutters and material specialists on what makes good linen, why people blend linen and cotton, and what's a reasonable price point. Once I felt that I was some way towards expertise, I felt ready to review the sheets.

I slept on these sheets for months, through cold spells and heat waves. I track my sleep, so I could check up on my quality, whilst making notes on the temperature at which I slept, how deeply I slept, and what it felt like on my skin across every day of the month.

I also slept on lots of other bed linen, so that I could accurately compare this to other premium, less premium, and budget sheets. That way, I can give you a good sense of having shopped around, without you having to do any of the leg work.

At the end of the review, I come to a conclusion on whether I think you should buy it. I give you all the information that I think you should know, including any other options.

This is an interesting pillow aimed at allergy sufferers. Its fibres are surface coated with HeiQ Allergen* Tech, a natural probiotic treatment which uses bacteria to break down inanimate allergens such as dust mite matter, pollen and pet dander. So what's it like to sleep on?

It’s designed for home washing at 40°C and even tumble drying. Just don’t bleach, dry clean or use laundry sanitiser – the aim is to keep the good bacteria alive to eat up allergens. The treatment is durable for more than 20 washes.

The pillow feels plump and pleasant, with lots of bounce-back. It feels like the sort of pillow you get in a hotel (like the Snuggledown Hotel Luxurious Side Sleeper Pillow did). It looks like any other pillow too, so it will fit into a standard size pillow case. If your partner has a hollowfibre pillow, you will struggle to tell which one is which without looking at the label.

It has a ‘silky-smooth Smartfil Cluster fibre filling’ but it feels the same as hollowfibre to me.

The plump, pleasant pillow feels nice to rest your head on, but I didn’t sleep brilliantly on it. When I got up, the area where my head had been was left slightly depressed but bounced back up promptly.

"Their petals are sweet, fragrant, and shaped just like little hearts," he explains, adding that the fully hardy plants can actually flower through autumn all the way into spring if you show them some TLC.

"Just be sure to pop them in a sheltered spot with freely draining soil, and don't forget to mulch!"

"You can either plant them in drifts or pot them up for some much-needed winter colour," adds Christopher promisingly.

It may sound counterintuitive but wrapping yourself in wool is the secret weapon for keeping cool, just as much as it is for keeping you warm. 

How can that be I hear you ask? It is thanks to wool's exceptional ability to regulate and maintain temperature, an attribute that is unmatched by alternative materials used for bedding. Wool is the wonder material that regulates your body's temperature at both ends of the scale – hot or cold.

Even when you don't have one of the best cooling mattresses there's hope because a wool mattress protector or topper is enough to improve the cooling effects of your existing mattress. I can write this with certainty because without sounding dramatic having wool bedding has quite literally changed my life in recent months.

Why wool bedding keeps you cool: an expert explanation

As someone prone to night sweats in recent years, I can sympathise with those who sleep hot and look for ways to keep cool even outside the highs of summer conditions. The solution is wool bedding, as I've only recently discovered by trying it to cure my sleep issues. 

I was lucky enough to meet Chris Tattersall, a professional sleep expert and MD of Woolroom who explained to me first-hand how the properties of wool could improve my overheating sleep issues. 

While Chris would probably be happier if everyone slept on a wool mattress he is conscious that the new hybrid memory foam mattresses are a popular choice so many are already committed. However, as he explained to me, any mattress can be improved to help keep you cool with the help of a wool layer. 

"One of the standout features of wool is its exceptional heat regulation properties," says Chris. "When used with memory foam mattresses, which tend to trap heat, a wool topper or even a protector can effectively manage temperature by wicking away moisture and allowing for better air circulation."

"This helps to create a cooler and more comfortable sleeping environment, especially during warmer months." This is because, unlike synthetic materials or even popular feather and down fillings, wool can transport moisture away from the body and regulate your temperature – keeping you comfortably cool in the summer. 

I'll admit I was sceptical because my overheating was so bad – occurring four, sometimes five nights a week with me waking up and having to get changed and lay a towel on my bed, a highly unpleasant experience that was ruining my sleep routine and causing great distress.

So far it's been five months of sleeping on a wool mattress protector with a wool pillow and I haven't had a single night sweat since - and the only thing I've changed is my bedding – not my lifestyle or diet.

On the first night, I still woke up at the standard 4 a.m. on the dot and although I felt hot I wasn't anywhere near the point of sweating. But after this initial transition on the first night, I haven't woken up since. Game-changing. 

I'd started questioning if a cooling mattress would work despite my own Eve hybrid mattress only being a few years old, and now I know that all I needed was a layer of wool bedding to feel the cooling benefits.
