Girly getaways - Cowley Manor

Grab a friend or two for a sophisticated take on the spring break – a weekend of Champagne, shopping and spas, says Jane Hayward

Cowley Manor, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
The Cotswolds' cutting-edge country house hotel and spa has been showered with superlatives since it opened six years ago. It's the ultimate in understated elegance combined with top-notch service – the perfect retreat for a break with the girls.

Dig the decor:
Worthy of Wallpaper* magazine. Lime and aubergine walls make the 19th-century Italianate mansion look 21st-century funky, while its 30 bedrooms have handmade furniture by up-and-coming British designers. Room categories run from Good to Best, with the Stable Block's two-level designs making great “sleepover” pads.

Easy days:
Wrap your weekend around the chic, sleek C-Side spa. It has two pools – an early morning dip in the outdoor pool as the steam wisps upwards is a delight, and you can take cappuccinos at cool little poolside tables. There's a sauna and steam room too. Unique Cloud 9 aromatherapy holistic wraps, facials and massages are adored by stressed Londoners, so book before you come and prepare to splurge (from £75 for a 45-minute massage). If you can drag yourself away, Cheltenham's boutiques are within 10 miles.

Fun nights:
Evenings are low-key. There's no dress code at dinner and kids are always welcome. Expect organic comfort food, such as Wild mushroom and goats' cheese ravioli, £16, or Beef Wellington served with horseradish mash, £19.50. Don't even think about hitting the town – mojitos in the cocktail bar followed by a slushy DVD on your bedroom's state-of-the-art Loewe TV make the best night in ever.

What it costs: Double/twin rooms from £245, B&B. Call 01242-870900;
