Dips are the ultimate simple snack, perfect dinner-party starter and ideal last-minute party food. You can dip most things, from seafood to sausages and the popularity of the dip has emerged from a rich tradition of cuisine around the world, from Mexican to Middle Eastern cuisine.
Many of Britain’s favourite dips have their foundations in the mezze. This is a key element of the diet throughout the Middle East and through parts of the Mediterranean including Greece. It is traditionally a communal family-oriented way of eating, served as a starter – ideal party food.
Flatbreads and pitta bread are the perfect partner for scooping up delicious mezze dishes and we have lovely recipe for flatbread with dukkah – an Egyptian-inspired blend of nuts and spices that is well worth a try. Other dishes on our site include hot houmous dip, artichoke and garlic dip and smokey aubergine – all perfectly complemented by crudités or toasted pitta.
Mexican food also has lots of delicious dipping options, from salsa to guacamole – an excellent recipe to quickly and easily try out is our speedy guacamole, traditionally and moreishly paired with tortilla chips.
Other dipping options ideal for a soirée or just for one include spicy tomato dip with chunky chips, or for a Japanese-infused option how about trying edamame, pea and wasabi dip with tortillas.
Barbecues are always enhanced by a few dips, as meat always tastes more delicious with some relish. We have a great recipe for barbecue sauce, or our tomato and red onion relish makes a great dip for burgers or sausages.
Seafood is also perfectly matched with a great dip and our lemon mayo is delicious with griddled prawns. Or if you want a great starter for a dinner party then why not try out our retro-inspired Kirsh cheese fondue, just dip in chunks of bread.
