Ingredients

  • 1 litre cider
  • 2 lemons, sliced
  • 2 fresh bay leaves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2tbsp caster sugar

Preparation

Mulled cider is a popular alternative to mulled wine and makes a delicious Christmas cocktail or winter party drink to impress friends and family. This simple mulled cider can also be made with apple juice, so you have an easy mocktail on hand for teetotallers and designated drivers.

The rich, apple flavour of cider makes it the perfect match for the warming spices popular in mulled wine. No wonder it’s a popular alternative to mulled red wine, which can be a bit rich and heady in large quantities and isn’t to everyone’s taste.

Apple and cinnamon is a classic flavour combination, so we’ve used cinnamon in this mulled cider recipe, while the lemon adds a refreshing edge which makes this mulled cider perfect for pairing with savoury canape recipes and nibbles like sausage rolls or antipasti like Parma hm.

This recipe serves up to four people, so if you're having a big get together then just scale up the quantities and there'll be plenty for everyone. And because it's so quick to make you can always make up another batch really quickly when glasses run dry.

It looks great served up in a large bowl, a bit like punch, or even poured into pretty vintage-style glass bottles once ready - just remember that it's best served warm so try and get it into people's glasses as soon as possible. You could try this mulled cider recipe with any kind of fruit cider if you fancy something a bit different. Autumnal fruit flavours would work particularly well with the spices, so try blackberry or pear.
