Bluefin tuna debate

The release of the film ‘The End of the Line’ which highlights the state of our depleted fish stocks, has thrown many foodies into a bit of a panic. The resulting scandal about top-restaurant chain Nobu offering the highly endangered Bluefin tuna (whilst paradoxically asking its customers to order something else…) has also made us question the ethics of eating tuna, the eternally popular fish.

Marks and Spencer has announced that it will only stock line or pole caught tuna from now on too. Look out for their new tuna and edamame bean sandwich, launching next week.

Which tuna to buy

- There’s really no reason why we can’t continue to enjoy sustainably-caught tuna.

- Look out for Yellowfin tuna in supermarkets if you’re buying steaks.

- Make sure that your tinned tuna is Skipjack or Yellowfin tuna. These are more sustainable species.

- By ensuring that the fish are line-caught or troll-caught and dolphin friendly, you will be minimising the environmental impact.

- Steer clear of tuna that does not have its species clearly labelled.

- If you find yourself in a restaurant with Bluefin tuna on the menu – give them a good dressing down!

Since fresh tuna is such an expensive fish, and even the sustainable species are not plentiful, it is wise to only buy it as a treat, rather than an everyday purchase. Instead, try experimenting with other meaty fish as an alternative to tuna, such as seabass and farmed salmon.
