The New Brasserie Everyone Is Talking About

The revival of British cuisine has just received a fresh boost with the opening of Holborn Dining Room & Delicatessen at luxury hotel Rosewood London. The brasserie – the latest brainchild of restaurateur Des McDonald – celebrates the best in British food with classic dishes made from the finest locally sourced ingredients.

Holborn Dining Room is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and its menu perfectly complements Rosewood London’s historic setting – the hotel occupies a beautifully restored Edwardian building originally dating from 1914. Split into eight sections (Charcuterie, Cold Counter, Hot Counter, Crustacea, Hot Kitchen, Sides and Afters), the menu features deliciously traditional dishes, such as Pressed Ham Hock, Whole Lobster Mayonnaise or Sirloin Steak, all accompanied by a long, sophisticated wine list.

The desserts menu is a triumph of retro puddings and cakes, including a sumptuous Bakewell Tart with Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream (pictured below) and Banana & Custard. The breakfast menu has firm favourites like Eggs Benedict and Cumberland Sausage Rolls and the afternoon tea is nothing short of delectable, with yummy Lobster Bridge Roll, Angus Roast Beef Sandwich and Welsh Rarebit, as well as cakes and cream tea.

Alongside the dining room is Holborn Delicatessen, which opens directly onto Holborn High Street and sells a tempting array of food on the go, from coffees and teas to select bread, charcuterie, marmalade, clotted cream and locally produced cheeses.

But it’s not just the food that is exceptional. Holborn Dining Room’s relaxed yet glamorous interiors, designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, are a contemporary take on traditional British charm, with lavish chandeliers, antique mirrors, leather upholstery and reclaimed oak furnishings, while the peaceful Terrace is the perfect place to dine alfresco. Des has also pulled together an extraordinary team, from Executive Chefs Lee Bull, former Head Chef of Le Caprice and Scott’s, and David Burke, who was previously Executive Chef at Le Pont De La Tour, to Head Maitre d’ Jon Spiteri and Bar Manager Goran Mulabdic, to run what promises to be London’s most exciting new eatery.

“I am delighted that Holborn Dining Room & Delicatessen is now open,” Des says. “It is a truly exciting project – an amazing room set in midtown London, featuring a menu of classic dishes with a few modern twists, using the best of British ingredients.”
