What happens when beauty imitates art? Make-up and fragrance masterpieces with serious dressing table appeal
Super-cool Japanese contemporary artist, Tekshi Murakami is known for blurring the boundaries between high art and pop culture, as at home on the walls of the Guggenheim as creating album artwork for Kanye West.
In the latest of a long line of artistic collaborations for Shu Uemura, Murakami has worked his illustrative magic on the Japanese brand’s most iconic products as well as limited edition make-up palettes. This Metamorphasis compact, £60, comprising six pretty pink eyeshadow and blush colours inspired by the artists’s 6 Princesses animation, is our hot tip for collector’s item status.
‘His sense of colour. His madness. The way he broke so many rules’ compelled Francois Nars to dedicate an entire collection to his personal hero, 1970’s photographer, Guy Bourdin.
Comprising shadows, lipsticks, nail polish and blush in fearless shades of deep fuschia, bright violet and sizzling coral, this limited edition range really captures the trailblazing spirit of Bourdin. The lip kit, £30, contains four bold yet wearable lip colours in Nars’ typically budge-proof formulas, ensuring the hues hold onto their pop’.
The face of opera soprano, Lina Cavialerri appeared hundreds of times in artist Piero Fornasetti’s work, and now her classical beauty has been remixed with modern design to adorn this array of exquisite candles.
Each candle burns to reveal one of a variety of fragrances created by master perfumers – we’re especially taken with Flora di Fornasetti, £99, redolent of a lush Milanese garden with top notes of ivy, lily and rose, and musky sandalwood undertones.
She may not be a household name quite yet, but fashion illustrator Holly Sharpe is making strong enough waves in the design world to land an exclusive collaboration with Limited Collection at M&S.
Featuring one of Holly’s distinctive colourful etchings, Exotic Girl, inspired by mardis gras, the 18-piece collection includes a bold eye palette in peacock purples and blues, a chunky kajal liner and our pick of the bunch, this beautiful embossed blush in Melba, £8.50.
