Sheridan Smith to take on role as porn star in ‘brave’ new TV drama

A year after wowing with her performance in the dramatisation of Shannon Matthews' disappearance in The Moorside, Sheridan Smith is set to take on another gritty TV role.

The actress is taking on the role of an ageing porn star in new Channel 4 show – Adult Consent – which will look at issues of “sex, power and consent.”

Written by Lucy Kirkwood, the show will investigate mother-of-three Jolene Dollar – played by Sheridan -who has been a British porn star for over twenty years.

Talking about the role – which will see her portray Jolene as she becomes a multi-million pound porn star – Sheridan said: “Adult Material tackles some really important topics, topics that I’m sure will resonate with people up and down the UK.

“I think it’s taboo-busting drama which not only confronts these questions head on but is also a brilliantly brave and unabashed story told with real heart.”

Reflecting on previous roles, including that of Julie Bushby in The Moorside and Cilla Black in the acclaimed series, Cilla, she added, “I’ve played some truly fascinating women in my career, from all walks of life, and I can’t wait to step into Jolene’s shoes.”

Sheridan’s latest role announcement comes just weeks after it emerged that she’s engaged to Jamie Horn – her current boyfriend.

According to a source close to the actress – who is said to be “head over heels” in love – finance broker Jamie proposed with a £10,000 ring.

“Jamie is very serious about her,'” the source revealed. “He has introduced Sheridan to his mum already.

“She doesn’t wear the ring on her finger, she’s got a necklace. She wears it there because she doesn’t want people to see that she’s got a ring.”

Seeing Sheridan happy is no doubt a welcome change for her fans, after the 36-year-old suffered a mental breakdown after her father passed away from cancer in 2016.

“My life was falling apart,” she confessed, a year later.

Adult Consent will show over four episodes – although it has no confirmed air date yet.
