Meryl Streep will be making her return to the small screen as it’s announced the actress will be joining the cast of Sky Atlantic’s Big Little Lies for its second season.
Meryl will be playing the role of Mary Louise Wright, the mother of abusive Perry Wright, played by Alexander Skarsgard.
The actress will be joining season one’s leading actresses Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon for the role.
It will be the first time the 68-year-old has played on role on television since 2003, having spent much of her recent career in films.
Meryl’s character Mary Louise will come to the town of Monterey following the death of her son, and is reportedly looking for answers.
The first season of the show, which originally premiered in America on network HBO, won rave reviews, and has since been shown on Sky Atlantic.
Big Little Lies season one received a whole host of prestigious awards, taking home eight Emmys and four Golden Globes during awards season.
Nicole Kidman confirmed the exciting news would be joining the cast of the star-studded drama with a sweet Instagram post.
She wrote, “Welcome to the #BigLittleLies family Ms. Streep – can’t wait xx”, alongside a photo of herself and Meryl at the recent Golden Globes award ceremony.
Fans on Nicole’s Instagram seemed delighted by the new addition to the cast, with one writing, “Omg!!!!!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 i cant wait!!!!”
Another fan commented, “Can’t wait!!!”, while a third user said, “Amazing, can’t wait. What a cast!!!! ❤️”
Reese also welcomed Meryl to the cast of the hit TV show with a sweet Twitter post, writing, “Beyond thrilled to have the one, the only, Meryl Streep joining the cast of #BLL for season 2. Get ready for more wine, secrets, and Big Little Lies. Monterey better watch out!!!”
According to reports, the show’s writer, Liane Moriarty, actually wrote the part of Mary Louise Wright with Meryl Streep in mind. And it seems to make sense, given that Meryl’s full name is actually Mary Louise Meryl Streep. Who knew!
The air date of Big Little Lies season two is yet to be announced.
