They are the pictures the world has been waiting to see, and finally Meghan Markle and boyfriend Prince Harry have made their first proper public debut together on camera, at an event at the Invictus Games in Toronto.
But this time, the pair were well and truly together. They arrived at a wheelchair tennis event in the city hand-in-hand together, looking happy and relaxed in one another’s company. It’s the first time the notoriously private couple have been pictured together at an official event. The first paparazzi pictures of Harry and Meghan emerged last year, when they were out on a theatre date in London.
They’ve since attended events together, including Pippa Middleton’s wedding and the wedding of Harry’s best friend Tom Inskip in Jamaica. But this recent outing marks the first time the couple have attended an event together knowing that they would be in the full glare of the world’s media, and camera lenses.
And it appears that Meghan and Harry were completely unfazed by the press attention and peering from eager fans.
Arriving at the event, the couple made a remarkable show of affection by holding hands as they walked into the arena. This was a marked change from royal protocol and a very different entrance to the one the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made over 10 years ago.
When Catherine and William made their first appearance as a couple, it was at a ceremony where the Prince was receiving his RAF wings from Prince Charles. And unlike Harry and Meghan, the now-married couple made no public display of affection.
One reporter, Rebecca English, who was there at the Invictus Games event with Prince Harry and Meghan, also noted how happy and relaxed the couple seemed in one another’s company.
The reporter also noted that Meghan may well be more prepared for royal life than anyone had thought, as she appeared to remain as cool as a cucumber despite all of the frenzied attention on her.
Onlookers at the event also reported that Harry took the time to explain the rules of wheelchair tennis to Meghan, as the sports rules differ slightly when played in a wheelchair.
Meghan sported a casual look for the sporting event, wearing a $495 pair of brown flats, a classic pair of ripper jeans, and a £229 crisp white shirt, which is named ‘The Husband’.
Royal commentators have of course been picking up on the name of the t-shirt, and have been wondering if the choice is a subtle nod to her relationship with Harry, and the rumours of an engagement between the pair.
It’s not clear yet whether they really are set to be married, but one thing’s for sure, this official, affectionate appearance together means that the couple are certainly very serious about one another.
