'Loose Women' TV show, London, UK - 11 Jun 2018
Loose Women panellist Kelly Brook landed herself in hot water on the show yesterday, after sharing her opinion on working mums.
The 38-year-old – who doesn’t have children – was discussing with her fellow panellists mums who take time off work to look after their children.
Kelly then went on to confess that she resents mothers who rush away from work in order to see to see their children.
“I have a pet hate, and I don’t have children so I don’t always understand, but I do work with some women that if they can’t make an appointment or can’t do something, or there is a deadline and some people will always say ‘oh it’s because I have to wash the baby’ or ‘feed the kids’ or ‘I’ve got to do the school run’.
“Others have kids and you never even hear about the kids. They are very professional and I love that.”
She continued, “I just think women shouldn’t use kids as an excuse not to do their job properly.
“I think it’s nobody’s business. If you can’t meet the demands of your job, don’t blame your kids.”
Kelly later went on to clarify her belief that it’s different if there are unexpected reasons for needing to leave work, such as a child being sick.
She however said that mums should ‘figure [their] career out’ around normal, daily tasks, such as the school run.
She said, “I have just been in situations with parents, where they have got to do the school run or something. They know they have to do the school run, they know they have to put the kids to bed, so wouldn’t you figure your career out around those things?”
The model’s comments appeared to resonate with the studio audience, who clapped in agreement with the sentiments.
However, viewers at home appeared less than impressed, slamming Kelly for her comments, saying she has “no idea”.
One mother on Twitter said, ‘Kelly brook has absolutely no idea, how can she even comment without having kids. Just wait u til you do kelly. THEN you will realise how hard it is #LooseWomen.’
While another agreed, ‘I have met a lot of unreliable workers in my career and it’s not because they have children. I work four days a week and I like to think my new role as mum hasn’t affected how hard I work my appraisal shows that #badexample to #workingmums #kellybrook #LooseWomen’.
A third viewer also commented, ‘I’d love to see if #KellyBrook still stands by this when she actually has some children of her own.’
Kelly later took to her own Instagram to defend her views, following the backlash from viewers.
She wrote, ‘It’s a debate show so I don’t expect everyone to agree with my opinions and that’s ok @loosewomen however my intention is never to upset anyone.
‘I work with a lot of working Mamas and they are all professional amazing women and never moan. They get on with it. I applaud them.’
