We can all remember the ‘secret’ dens we made as children – now Save the Children are asking families everywhere to make use of those memories as part of their latest fundraising campaign. On 17th and 18th June, the charity is encouraging families and schools to get together and build the ultimate hideout to help those less fortunate.
Whether you pile up cushions and create a bed-sheet teepee, transform the sitting room into a huge den or a cardboard box into the entrance to a magical world, the idea is that families and schools get sponsored to spend a day or night in their den and effectively raise money to help Save the Children build better lives for children all over the world.
This year, the official ambassador for Save The Children’s Den Day is Peppa Pig – the perect mascot to encourage your children or grandchildrento get involved!
Daddy Pig, from Peppa Pig, says: “I’m a bit of an expert at building dens! There are so many fun things you can do together in a den – like shadow puppets, playing an instrument and story time. Mummy pig and I love to build dens with Peppa and George. Oink oink!”
From the Philippines to Syria, Honduras to Sierra Leone, last year, Save the Children responded to 84 emergencies in 47 countries – delivering life-saving food, water, healthcare, education and shelter to over 5 million people. The money raised by Den Day could help provide the aid children and their families need next time a devastating emergency hits.
And it doesn’t take much to make a difference. £5 could buy storybooks for five children who have had to leave their homes and become refugees in another country, while £20 could buy enough healthy food, like fresh meat and vegetables, for a child to eat for one month.
