TV presenter Carol Vorderman has shared some devastating news with her fans, announcing in a Twitter post that her mother Jean has passed away.

The 54-year-old posted the message late in the afternoon of Monday 19th June to reveal to fans that her mother's funeral had just taken place - the first news that her mother had died.

She wrote, "Some days are tough, today was one of them. Today was my amazing Mum's funeral... Rest In Peace Jean Vorderman. You will always be loved."

Jean was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, with Carol herself announcing the sad news in March - poignantly, on Mother's Day.

Carol also revealed that her 88-year-old mother, who had previously battled cancer three times before, had received a terminal diagnosis.

She also said that following the diagnosis, her mother had undergone an operation to have a 3lb ovarian tumour removed, and had also been battling kidney cancer as well as being diagnosed with skin cancer.

At the time, Carol shared updates on her mum's condition on Twitter. She wrote "Mum has had a 3lb ovarian tumour removed (miraculously it hadn't spread) then she had kidney cancer so half of her right kidney was removed, this time it's a pretty big malignant melonoma, but Mum says 'goodness me, this is nothing. I'll be in and out in no time.'

"Scans have shown this skin cancer hasn't spread either so we consider ourselves lucky children today."

Carol regularly visited her mother in hospital when she was receiving treatment. The presenter often shared some of the good times with her mum, tweeting a photo in April of the two of them after having had breakfast together.

Breakfast with Mum this morning......she's saying hello to the world xx #AGoodDay'.

But following the initial operations, Jean herself admitted that she didn't want any further treatment, saying that she wants to live the rest of her life in peace.

"At my age I don't want to undergo any further operations or chemotherapy treatment which can't cure these new cancers anyway.

"Now my family and me will concentrate on being happy and celebrating the time we have together. I'm refusing to let them be sad."

The pair have always been very close - particularly so given that Carol's father had an affair while Jean was pregnant with her.
