‘It was weird’: Strictly stars discuss Brendan Cole’s exit from the show – as he takes on a brand new challenge

It was the biggest Strictly Come Dancing announcement of the year, when Brendan Cole revealed that he would not be returning to the show for its 16th series.

Fans and viewers were left gutted by the news. And it seems the revelation hit the 44-year-old’s fellow professional dancers just as hard too.

On yesterday’s This Morning, Karen and Kevin Clifton appeared, and addressed Brendan’s axing. The pair – who have recently announced their separation – confessed that the news was “weird”, given how close the group had become.

The former couple also made a reference to Brendan’s long-standing history with the show. He is one of just two professional dancers (the other being Anton Du Beke), who has starred on all of the show’s series.

Chatting to Holly and Phil, Strictly dancer Karen admitted, “He’s going to be missed.

“It was a little bit weird. He’s like our big brother. He’s been there since the beginning and he was a big part of building Strictly.

However, it looks as though Brendan won’t be taking it easy following the end of his long Strictly career – as he has just announced a brand new challenge.

After the news was revealed, Brendan confessed that it’s something he’s always wanted to do.

“For years, I have been a massive fan of the match and have always watched the game in between performances.

“To be able to finally announce that I will be swapping my dancing shoes for football boots this summer feels incredible. What’s bigger than the nation’s love of dancing? The nation’s love of the beautiful game, of course – and I’m aiming for tens across the board.”

Brendan Cole will be joining a host of other celebrities for the match. He’ll be in good company, as Mo Farah, Gordon Ramsay, and Robbie William’s have also confirmed they involvement in the game. Olly Murs will also be taking part.
