As you’d expect from a building designed by Philippe Starck, Mama Shelter isn’t your average hostel – but it’s a big hit with cosmopolitan young visitors. With super-stylish rooms priced from 79 Euros for a single, it’s far more affordable than most Paris hotels, and feels luxurious to boot. Rooms include Apple TVs (complete with free movies and internet) and the most comfortable of beds. Don’t expect a lot of room to swing a cat, but who needs to move around the room when the bed is so cosy?

‘Boutique’ isn’t the right word when you’re dealing with a company like Virgin, but the mega-brand has opened the first in a series of hotels that offer more bang for your buck. Rooms aren’t just rooms – they’re ‘chambers’ divided into two, to give you greater privacy and flexibility during your stay. You’ll have a ‘sleeping lounge’ (complete with ergonomic bed) and a ‘dressing room’, separated by a sliding door. You can request perks like an extra pillow or dinner reservations via an app on your phone, and snacks and drinks in the mini-bar are sold at street prices, rather than the usual extortionate fee. Rooms start from $209 a night.
Billed as a “guest-house-come-boutique-hotel”, Brody House has 11 individually designed bedrooms inspired by, and named after, artists. It won the 2015 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, which is high praise indeed, and if you book at the last minute, you might get a room for as little as 89 Euros per night.
Next to Trinity College in central Dublin, you’ll find the 4* Trinity City Hotel. Rooms are designed with character and comfort in mind, and the hotel couldn’t be better placed for the city centre. Rates start at 90 Euros per night for longer stays.
Every room at the Astoria7 hotel in San Sebastian is themed around a movie star, from Anjelica Huston to Dennis Hopper. You’ll have a flat-screen TV and DVD player and the use of the hotel’s fitness room. Get a last-minute room from 67 Euros per night.
