Lake Garda -but which town?

We are thinking of going to Lake Garda in September and i've been reading lots of websites about where to go/stay and really have managed to confused myself! Have any of you lovely ladies visited and could recommend somewhere. We are looking for walking, sightseeing and good food.
Any advice welcome
