When I contacted my local group I found the walks a bit too advanced for myself as a beginner. They did put me in touch with another walking group in my area that aimed for shorter walks. It might be a good idea to contact your local library to see if there are any other types of walking groups in your area if you want something more at a beginner's pace. I don't think the fact that you are a single woman should put you off - everyone is there for the activity and they are not necessarily part of a couple. With the scenery constantly changing there is always something to talk about with people and quite often there is a stop at a local pub for lunch. It is a very social activity and a great way to meet people from all walks of life.
