shoelover,

I started running about five years ago to do a Race for Life (I'm in my mid forties) and loved it so much I carried on. I've now done countless half marathons (no marathon yet!!).

I find it does keep the weight down but you have to be careful not to overcompensate by eating too much. Ideally do weights to tone as well.

I think that running outside is best. Fresh air, something to look at. I find a treadmill boring and last about five minutes.

Race for Life (Cancer Research races) is good (3 miles and women only) although they are over the summer so you might not be ready. Have a target to aim for. Most races these days have a large element of fun runners. The atmosphere is always good as well. Start slowly, run/walk for a bit and build up to longer jogs. Aim to run steadily for about 20 to 30 mins

There are some good websites that give you training schedules (hal higdon is one).

BUY SOME DECENT RUNNING shoes. Go to a good sports shop like Sweatshop and they will advise you. Get a copy of Runners World. It caters for complete beginners too.

Enjoy - I am not a natural runner (like the tortoise not the hare). But I always get there and I'm addicted!!

Good luck
Sarg
