Be Near Me - Andrew O'Hagan
      07/06/2008 12:18

I found reading this book profound and disturbing. The narrator is David Anderton, a Catholic priest. The story is set in his most recent posting, a poor and remote Scottish town. Father David makes friends with two of the local teenagers, it is not clear why he does so and it proves to be his downfall for Father David is gay, and it is his relationship with fifteen-year-old Mark which provides the most disturbing aspect of this book. Who is leading who on? The characters are clearly drawn, moving, and witty, particularly the housekeeper, Mrs Poole, the perfect antidote to Father Ted's Mrs Doyle!
