I think my problem is that I was brought up to clear my plate ("starving children in Africa", "you'll stay there until you finish", "no pud until you've finished your main" etc). This was at home and at primary school in the days of school meals consisting of stodge and veg boiled to destruction (no chance of chips every day so I still see chips as a treat). It's a hard habit to break but I think I'm getting there. I too think 'diets' are ridiculous - you end up longing for everything that's banned even if you'd not normally want it and are constantly hungry.
