Whether you want crockery for everyday use or for special occasions, these top tips will help you decide what to buy.
• For everyday use, you’re going to need something sturdy that will withstand daily use. White crockery is classic choice and you can always add some coloured items such as bowls or mugs to brighten things up.
• Look for crockery that’s part of a store’s standard range, that way if things should get broken then they can be easily replaced.
• Check your crockery is dishwasher and microwave safe, even some of the sturdiest choices aren’t and patterned crockery sometimes can’t be put in dishwasher as this can damage the pattern.
• For more formal occasions, a matching full dinner service is a good idea. Keep this stored safely in bubble wrap or layered with corrugated cardboard to avoid knocks and damage. Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry with a soft tea towel before using.
• Mixing and matching china is a good way to use pieces from damaged sets and will give your table and eclectic feel. Try layering different patterned or coloured plates, side plates and bowls to create impressive table settings.

Guide to buying tableware for the terminally bewildered.
1. Go to shop.
2. Pick pretty colour.
3. Get carer to pay for it.
4. Take home.
5. Isn't melamine tableware difficult to break when you drop it?
Just in case the level hadn't been lowered enough for us, I thought I'd take it to a different dimension!
