Jobseeker's Allowance - Please read if you are out of work.
      #507872 - 15/11/2009 10:31

Cross-post from "Your Lives" board because I am worried that the article may lead people not to claim Jobseeker's when they are actually entitled to it. Here is the e-mail I have sent to the editor today:

Dear Woman & Home,

I am somewhat behind reading my much enjoyed subscription copies of W&H, so am only just reading the September issue (to my shame, but it’s been a very busy few months!).

I felt I must write to address a factual error in your article on page 57 about Jobseeker’s allowance and I would urge you to please print a correction if this has not already been done, as you may inadvertently stopped people from claiming money that is due to them, as they will trust advice from you.

It is a very common misconception that if you have savings then you cannot claim, which your article reinforces. It is, however, absolutely incorrect. Regardless of your financial position, so long as you’re between 18 & retirement age and have paid National Insurance contributions for the last two years, you can claim Contribution Based Jobseeker’s Allowance of £64.30 per week (varies for under 25s & a few other cases) for up to 182 days. Please direct people to the direct.gov.uk website for clarification:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndB...ork/DG_10018757

I do hope that you will print this to ensure that your readers are properly advised.

Thanks & Regards,
Penny

I think you're absolutely right Penny Purple but If like me you have taken an early retirement because of stress and your small works pension(because of taking it early) is more than the £60 approx you are entitled to ZILCH even though you have paid your NI contributions in the appropriate year. It seems to be a very unfair situation but I suppose reflects the crazy world we live in!!
