Are you making a Christmas Cake?
      #489723 - 20/10/2009 14:32

Afternoon Ladies, there's no getting away from it....Christmas is well and truly looming and after my MIL's phone call to tell me she's made her Xmas Puds, it has made me start thinking about my Christmas cake. Last year I made Nigella's Chocolate Fruit cake which was a delicious alternative to the traditional one. Have you started to make plans for your cake yet?

I always avoid Christmas cake making as it so soooo calorific - eating it not making it!. Used to make my own puds but have a fabulous alternative now. Nigella's sounds fab so might try that.

Yes, making for us, son, daughter and step-son. Don't make puds anymore. My mum always made puds and we had a stirring and wishing session does anyone else do that?

I always make a cake, puddings and mincemeat too. Once I'd made my own I couldn't eat the bought stuff! OH loves Christmas food, but YD doesn't like the cake I make, so I might try Nigella's this year as well. That will get me into trouble with the eating though...

I made mine last week, use the same recipe as my mam used in the bero cookbook. Soaked the fruit in brandy night before and added some more to the cake yesterday, it does smell lovely and I'll make a yule log a few days before christmas.

I made my cake at the week-end and have done the puddings
today,I use an old recipe I've been using for years, wouldn't
be the same without making them and my D wouldn't like
it either!

I made a cake at the weekend in a moment of madness (haven't done one for years and usually buy one from M&S!) but haven't contemplated doing a Christmas pudding - have found a lovely orange one which Waitrose do and have had that for the past couple of years which is really scrummy,so will probably carry on with that!

Gill3SQ .................. what is your alternative to xmas pudding pls?

I did make cake and pudding one year but as it is only me that eats it it seems a bit of a waste. I usually buy a small pudding from M&S or supermarket and sometimes a cake as well.

I used to when there were more of us, but now we're just 3, two of which don't like fruit cake, no, I can't eat the whole thing myself, well I could......... Used to do an M&S pudding with no suet which was divine, but again only me and D's OH to eat it, so I buy.

I haven't made a cake just yet - but I will do - only me and OH eat it (but all the more for us !!) Mum makes a xmas pud and whoever is hosting xmas dinner gets to have it - but only the adults eat it - what is happening to the next generation? When will they grow to appreciate christmas cake and pud ?

Yes, Miss F is coming down in a couple of weeks and we are having a cook-in to make puds and cakes. Music will be on, lots of chat too.

I made my cake yesterday, it is an old family recipe that my mam uses to make wedding cakes. Will make some mincemeat tomorrow and might make a pudding but my MIL used to do it, so it will be the first time for me. I don't really like them but will alter a recipe to remove the mixed peel.
Has anyone a recipe that doesn't have it in as I really don't like it?

Foxie, Miss Bucket and I always have a couple of baking days before Christmas as well. We have one day making the cake, mincemeat and puds (Delia's recipes) and then another day making everything for the freezer i.e. mince pies, sausage rolls, brandy butter, sausage and bacon rolls and bread sauce and shortbread. We put Christmas music on and have a lovely time and has begun a family tradition.

Need to book the days very soon!
