Smart casual? What do you think it means?
      #460944 - 09/09/2009 13:47

We're going to a party soon and the invites say 'smart casual'. I never know what this really means. OH will do his usual - smart trousers, shirt and jacket and leave off the tie but I'm still struggling for ideas. I would like to wear a dress but is that too smart? Are trousers too casual? Why can't people either say 'smart' or 'casual' or just leave it up to their guests?

Any ideas please? Would a white skirt with a silky black and white top be ok or a smart wrap dress with heels? I don't really want to wear trousers as I virtually live in them and love getting a chance to dress up a bit.

Thanks
Chrissi

I would take it that it means no party/cocktail or very dressy sparkly things. So either of what you want to wear would be perfect. I agree with you, it is nice to have an opportunity not to wear jeans or trousers for a change. So concentrate on the smart, rather than the casual and have a good time.

I wore and am going to wear again shortly my favourite go anywhere outfit......wrap dress with heels, its one of those dresses that you dress up or down....although its not good enough for cocktail. I too wear jeans/trousers a lot, so its nice to get the legs out!!!! Have a great time.

When my OH's boss retired recently his leaving do was held in a casino and the dress code on the invitation was "elegant casual" .. we all spent weeks trying to figure out what that meant! I ended up wearing a sparkly black skirt, high suede heels and a short sleeved black knitted top .. but what stress! I'm sure he only did it to be mischievous..

A wrap dress and heels sounds perfect

Just wear what you want. I'm sure some people will try to overdress or underdress and honestly no-one will judge you. Just wear what you feel comfortable in and look confident.
