Edinburgh - recommended route through ??!!
      #451221 - 27/08/2009 13:40

We're taking our eldest up to Uni on 12th September, from Warwickshire. So far have had recommendations to drive up to Glasgow then onto Edinburgh as a quick route, but once in the city the last time I was up with her (flew up - NEVER AGAIN !!) most of the city roads seemed to be dug up and I am concerned it will take us ages to get to the otherside of the Meadows?? and that the sat nav won't know that the roads are dug up !!! Is there anyone local on here that can give me some 'insider' knowledge please?

I wouldn't drive to Glasgow on the way to Edinburgh. It isn't quicker, it's just two sets of traffic. I live in the north west of England and have friends in Edinburgh that I met when I was at Uni there. Take the M74 as far as Jn 13, then follow the A702 through Biggar and on up to Edinburgh. If you stay on this road, going through the suburbs of Fairmilehead and Morningside it will take you pretty much right to the Meadows. The airport is on the other (north) side of the city which is probably why you had problems. Likewise coming in from Glasgow on the M8 means going through town. Use your Satnav. If the roads are up you'll get diversion signs. When we took our three to various universities at the start of term there were always plenty of signs telling us where to go, but if you get stuck, wind down your window and ask someone. If you want to look at your route in advance go on www.theaa.com and put in your postcode and that of your destination into their route planner. It will give you instructions that you can print out, and a map that you can zoom in on.. I hope your daughter has a brilliant time.

Hi, I live in Edinburgh, and you do not need to go through Glasgow. Come up on the M6.... at Junc 13 come off on to the M74 for Biggar, then on to Edinburgh. The Meadows are free of any disruption from the tram works, it will be busy in Town though.
Hope this helps

I LOVE this site !! Thanks to both of you x x x I've just looked at your route on the map and its so logical, what a dunderhead I was thinking I needed to approach the city via the airport - doh !! Your route even goes past Ikea !! (or so my trusted AA paper map says !!) Daughter is staying at uni accomodation in Warrender Crescent and thats just off the A702 !!
Next challenge will be finding our hotel on the corstorphine road - which is completely in the wrong direction for home - but ce la vie

Louise, you will not need to go right through town to get to Corstorphine, your satnav should get you there ok. Also for heading home from Corstorphine you are on the right side of town to get back on to the road to Biggar, via the bypass, your hotel reception should be able to help you. Enjoy Edinburgh, hope the sun shines for you.

Hi Louise

You've had all the good advice about routes; I don't need to add to it. We've just spent a week in Edinburgh and though the centre is ripped apart, approaching from the south is still quite straightforward.

Just to say Warrender Crescent is an excellent place to stay and your daughter will love the area
