Simvastatin and side-effects
      #410936 - 19/06/2009 21:48

has anyone had any bad side-effects while taking simvastatin (used for high cholesterol).

I've had some awful times since I started, and I wondered if it's just me, my imagination, or whatever.

I've checked the internet, and it lists my symtoms, but there again it lists every sympton, so I don't know what is real and what isn't.

My husband has been taking statins for several years without side effects.

I would go back to the GP.

Hi Wispa
MOH started on simvastatin a couple of years ago and he was backwards and forwards to the GP because of the side effects. He seriously considered giving up and not bothering, anyway, to cut a long story short the GP was right when she said the side effects would go away and he is now fine. Hope this helps.

I don't "do " side-effects, and never read the leaflets unless it puts ideas in my mind.

My GP said I may get joint pain, but that CQ10 was supposed to help. I've been taking that, and no problems.

However I have been very constipated, my hair is shedding(common in summer, but a lot more than usual), and very down and depressed. OH suggested I check the internet, and these are all listed as side-effects.

But not sure if they are common side-effects, or obscure ones

I was on 20mg Simvastatin for a couple of years, and my leg pain was awful, don't know how I made it up the stairs. GP prescribed something else but it was no better so I have given up. I was told recently by a cardiologist that it is more important to take the dispersible aspirin.

HI, if you think you are having side effects, a blood test will prove that because something or other is raised in your blood. In fact, some side effects can be serious and I thought all my joint and muscle pains were because I have a bit of arthritis and ignored them for 4 years. GP asked me to go for a blood test out of the blue and took me straight off the simvastatins! Apparently they can in rare cases cause muscle and nerve damage and this was what my problem was although I never mentioned the side effects to GP. So ask for blood test to see how serious if at all your side effects are.

I have been taking 40mg of Simvastatin for about years with no side effects at all, maybe you should visit your doctor again after looking on the website recommended.

I was on the same dose as Carsma for a while. About twenty minutes after taking them I would feel very strange, weak and giddy and the attacks use dto come on quite out of the blue. When I went to my GP he took me off them immediately. I then tried the diet route along with a daily walk. Currently my last blood test showed a reading of under 5.

I took statins for a while a few years ago -depression, insomnia and suicidal thoughts - we read about these negative side effects in a sunday Telegraph article and showed the GP - he took me off them immediately. EB had fantastic cholesterol levels but he still had blocked arteries - so perhaps there is more research to do

Advice please.

I haven't taken the simvastatin for 5 days. No longer constipated, no longer "down" (depressed might be too strong a word), and I haven't been tearful for 3 days.

Do I persevere,so I can say to the doctor that these were real symptoms?

I have been on simvastin for years....Hospital put me on them 25mg to start and I was fine......then my doctor put them up to 40mg about a year ago and I do get pains in my legs but put it down to age. My mother was on 20gm and had a very bad back, doctor would not take her off them and she was ill not so long back and the consultant at the hospital told her to stop taking them and she's been fine since....so it make's you wonder

When simvastatin came out there was an article (in the Daily Mail, where else?) warning about its inferiority. Obviously it is much cheaper than the statins most people are taking so the NHS has recommended the change. My OH refused to change siting the reasons given in the newspaper article so he is still on Lipitor.
