I am looking for ideas for first week in September - all our holidays over the past 30 years have been in the UK - must be near Steam Trains! I have been to North York Moors, Severn Valley, North Wales, Mid Wales etc etc etc.....
I need something that will appeal to hubby so that he does not spend the whole time moaning - I would like somewhere that I don't end up carrying all the photography gear, raincoats etc.
I would like to go to a place with nice food, scenery and reasonable weather - it is September after all. Maybe I won't need to take loads of books to pass the time. Not big cities - maybe the coast or something like that - not too posh - hubby doesn't like 'dressing up'
I have about £750 to spend any ideas ladies?

Thats a tough call. How about something different? Warner do some very nice breaks, some in country houses some near the coast, adult only, and within your price range, some have activities day - worth a look.

Does it have to be near a steam train line? You could try Porlock in Somerset - gorgeous little village on the edge of Exmoor, lots of walking, cosy pubs, near the coast. You can easily drive to Minehead which is the start of the West Somerset railway.

If one steam train would be enough you could try Swanage,Dorset.There is a train that runs from Swanage to Corfe Castle,lovely scenic route.
Swanage is near the beginning of the Jurassic Coast,which is a world Heritage site.It is also within easy travelling distance of Bournemouth and Poole and the New Forest is not too far away for a day out.
I'm not sure that I could stand 30 years of holidays based on steam trains though,perhaps you could celebrate separately?lol

Your husband sounds just like my sister's partner. He's even built a miniature steam train and track round his cottage. Has yours done that yet? Maybe the two of them should go away together!

Not sure if you meant you would like something very different and perhaps go abroad. You are early enough to get some cheap flights - maybe a long weekend in France/Italy? We flew to Cornwall a couple of years ago for four days and hired a car - it was fantastic- can you get flights from Edinburgh to Newquay? It was something we had never done and it really was a lovely long weekend. Will put my thinking cap on.

There is somewhere where you can actually stay in the old railway carraiges! which may keep him happy. Think it is around Shropshire or Severn Valley.

Have you been to West Cumbria? There is a great narrow guage railway which runs steam trains - The Ravenglass and Eskdale railway or the ratty as it is known locally. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery, you have the fells and coast and some great places to stay and eat, try the the visitcumbria website for more info, or ask me it is my old stamping ground so know it quite well. Its our 30th anniversary this year too so am wondering what to do also.
