Has anyone been to Gibraltar? Wheres the best place to stay, visit etc?

My parents have been to Gibraltar and they had a great time. They only went for a day trip and they brought me back a toy Gilbrator Monkey as Gibraltar are famous for their monkeys.
Unfortunately I cannot ask them where they visited during their day trip as they are in Vienna at the moment

I have a house in spain and fly into gibraltar. actually i am flying tomorrow from gatwick.
gibraltar is very small but full of history.very funny feeling to be abroad but have main street which has all the english shops(british shops!)
i generally go into gib to get shopping and be able to use sterling as its cheaper at the moment.i think you may find a short stay there could be long enough.
concerts on from time to time.saw elton john there a few years ago not a very pretty place but if you want cheap ciggies and drink its the pklace to go.

Hi jewelly - I went to Gibraltar on a day trip while on holiday in Spain. It was very interesting and the monkeys were very entertaining but I felt a day trip was enough. Plenty of shops but who wants to go to BHS etc. on holiday.

Hi Jewelly,
I went to Gibraltar for the day too. We were visiting friends of friends who are natives of the place and therefore think it is amazing. Overall there is not much there and it is tiny. The airport runway goes over the main road onto Gib territory. It was very dusty, lots of new building, crowded roads. The views back to Spain were just of docks and cranes and industry. Not a pretty place at all. People only went to stock up on duty free etc.

I used to live in Gibralter many years ago, and when we returned and visited the Rock when we were on a cruise a few years ago, I couldnt believe how the place had changed, for the worst unfortunately.
Apart from visiting the apes at the top of the Rock, and a few reasonable places to eat, it is, as Gill says, nothing more than a Duty Free Zone, with people by the score walking up the main street, carrying all their goods and then returning back to the cruise ships.
Good Luck if you do go.

I'm afraid that I have to agree with Plasmo. I first went to Gibralter many years ago. Then it had character, atmospjhere, and good beaches. At the time, the crossing between Gibralter ajnd Spaiin was closed, but there were quite a few North Africann shops, and restaurants. Now it is unfortunately almost like a building site in parts, & the Main Street is just full of duty free shops, all selling the same products at the same prices. There are a few bright spots - the Riock Hotel is the main one - it is wonderful! There are only 2 other hotels on the iisland, but they are no match for the Rock. There is also a very goood Italian restaurant off Main Street, but it only opens untill 6.00pm. The nightlife is usually only in the "English" pubs. Sorry I cant be more positive. If it is your 1st visit, its just OK, but I've now been 2 or 3 times, and the last time was so bad, I'm afraid I wont be back.
Hopefully someone will give you some more positive views. The last time I was there was 2004 - it might well be better now.

Hi ladies, have visited Gibraltar many times and most recently three weeks ago. I have to agree with alot of the comments that have been made. But on a positive note I love going back for a couple of days everynow and again. Take one of the dolphin boats out into the straits.....I've never been disappointed. Our fave restaurant is called Thyme not cheap but fantasic food. There are two new marina areas with bars and restaurants and a casino well worth a visit if only to watch the world go by in the sunshine.
For me Gib is a very quirky place where the sun usually shines ( have been there in bad weather). Have stayed at the rock and the elliott and both are good, although they both could do with abit of compettion. One very traditional and one very modern. Do NOT stay the bristol...........we checked in about 5 years ago and checked straight back out. I think the Rock is due to shut for some time but not sure when........think it is going to be refurbished.
I can see why people don't like it but it does have its good points if you look beyond the duty free shops and the building going on.
