Hi if anyone has been to Nerja in the Costa del Sol, I would really appreciate your comments. We are looking to book for our 40th wedding anniversary next Jan. Also if you think the place is worth going to can you also recommend any lovely hotels?

Nerja is very english but quite charming. January is a very quiet time of the year to go though but it is never totally dead and can be chilly in the evenings. No 34 is a posh restaurant. Not sure if it is a hotel as well. The parador is supposed to be extremely nice, stones throw from a lovely beach and an easy walk into the centre. You can book in online - don't know the website address but if you google paradors in spain, you'll get it.

I think it is the nicest place on the Costa del Sol but think I might choose somewhere else for a January special occasion, perhaps the Canary Islands as they should be a bit warmer.

Recently went to Frigiliana just inland from Nerja. I love the area but have never been in January so not sure whether there would be enough to do if the weather was poor. Probably ok if you're keen walkers. We stayed in a lovely apartment for 2 with a big terrace and plunge pool in Frigiliana which is a lovely old white village a few miles inland from Nerja. Would be very happy to give you the address of the website if you're interested

georgiegirl, I live in the mountains behind Nerja we bought because we love the area including Nerja where we holidayed many times. Its a very spanish town, although there are many expats who live in the town from German, French, Dutch, Norweign, Danish. There is approximately 6000 brits in the area, but as I say it still remains a very spanish town. Join the Spanish and promenade on the Balcon de Europe between 5-7pm. Unfortunately I have no experience of the hotels but the Hotel Balcon de Europa is very popular and right in the centre of Nerja. And Hostal Abril has been fairly recently refurbished. This hotel was set up by an english couple who featured on a tv programme which I though you might be interested in its not in Nerja but is just down the coast at Torrox. http://www.hotellacasatorrox.com/index.asp Have a look on websites like TripAdvisor and you might see more up to date info.
I hope you go to Nerja and you enjoy it as much as we do. And just to let you know January this year wasn't good weatherwise (as it was all over Spain) but last year (2008) the weather was great.

Thanks to all for messages, could you tell me if the area is very hilly? Also is it clean and colourful and does it generally feel 'safe'. Are there many pavement type cafes and would a few be open early in the year? Is it a nice area to walk around and are there any decent shops or just typical souvenier types? Oooo Alig99 would you mind telling me more about your life in Spain, I am intrigued by stories like this as it is something we had always wanted to do but as I got a bit older, I have sort of chickend out.

hi georgiegirl. Yes it's a very mountainous region inland from Nerja, and very beautiful. You will definitely feel safe in Nerja which has a lot of older residents - and holidaymakers too. It isn't one of the noisy, nightclubby sort of resorts at all! In the summer there are lots of pavement cafes but I haven't been in the winter so can't answer that Sorry to bang on about Frigiliana but it's very beautiful and colourful - all the buildings are white and they look stunning against the blue sky, and only a few miles from Nerja

Nerja itself isn't hilly but you can see the mountains. As aquarius says, Frigiliana is lovely and hilly. There are loads of restaurants but a lot do close for the winter. Having said that, there will still be plenty to choose from. It does get cold in January at night, so you won't be sitting out then. We have an apartment 15Km away and have been out in January before. Came home with a suntan but needed the heating on for a few hours at night. It's once the sun begins to go down, the temperature plumets. You will literally pack t-shirts and woolly jumpers. There are plenty of shops in Nerja but noticed last time some had closed down due to the economic climate. Worth hiring a car, if only for a day, as the roads there are not too busy. Have to confess I don't drive out there because we drive from Malaga airport, and Malaga terrifies me!! The Sierra Nevada is less than 2 hours away if you fancy a bit of skiing!! Not built up or nightclubby like west of Malaga.

Used to work for someone who has a house and an apartment in Nerja and several colleagues went out there for holidays and said it was wonderful and not like the typical stereotype of the Spanish Costas.

I've been to the Costa de Sol a few times, but not to Nerja unfortunately georgiegirl so can't give you advice.
Aquarius you have sold Frigiliana to me (hadn't even heard of it before tbh), so would you mind posting the website address of the apartment you stayed at? I can then bookmark it for future reference ie when the kids are old enough for us to go on a holiday for 2!

Hi
I've never been but have some friends who have been going regularly for years and they love it. They use the RUI Monica Hotel. They go through the winter and say ithe weather's pleasant but chilly in the evening.

I like the sound of Nerja more and more also Frigliana (is that correct?) Can you get a bus there from Nerja? I don't mind if it is cold at night in fact this would be nice, as long as it is reasonable during the day.
SueJane, which hotel were you burgled from?
ValC, we were thinking of staying at the Rui Monica, could you possibly ask your friends if certain rooms are preferable, i.e. it would be nice to know which part of the hotel gets the afternoon/evening sun on the balconies

Hi Gem17, and anyone else who's interested, the website for the apartment in Frigiliana is info@frigilianahouses.com. It is owned by a delightful couple who have other properties in the area though not in the village itself. Georgiegirl, there is a bus that goes to and from Frigiliana once an hour from Nerja. It takes about 15 mins to getthere.

HI I stayed at the riu monica last year, nice hotel, the best thing is that it is so central. You can walk into town which is very pretty with some great restaurants and bars. x

Hi Georgiegirl, sounds like lots of ladies like Nerja, Susieblue has given you lots of good info. Don't worry overlly much about thefts, they happen all over the place unfortunately even in UK . Generally most burglaries are not done by locals and the northern Costa del Sol (Malaga to Nerja) is about the safest in Spain. Its my understanding that the Costa Blanca has a bigger problem, Spanish Lady maybe able to tell you more. As any where you just need to be security conscience and of course staying in hotels more careful than usual.
I also agree Car Hire is a good idea, driving in Spain is generally quite good as the roads are not so busy in the UK. Malaga roads are busy around rushhour in the morning and evening just like major towns and cities in the UK, but no worse than trying to find your way out of a strange city in the UK, actually I think its somewhat better as the road signs are very clear out of the airport. If driving to Nerjayou will just need to follow the signs to Motril and Almeria.
There are a number of websites I have bookmarked for Nerja and the surrounding areas. I thought you might like to see this one which is based on a magazine that is produced monthly for Competa and the surrounding area. www.thegrapevine.es and this one for Nerja http://www.nerjanow.com/.
I'll send you a PM in a few days about my living in Spain, I'm just off to France for a week so will do it from there.

I went to Nerja for two weeks and really loved it. It's a great base to explore - Granada - Malaga - or just stay put. Great shops. Best beach is at Balcon de Europa - go for lunch and slip down to their beach - nice and secluded. Enjoy!
