Hi
I'm looking into laser treatments for a small varicose vein on my lower leg. Has anyone tried this treatment. If so, could you please let me know if it worked well and what sort of cost we're talking about.
Many thanks.

I haven't had it done but have wanted to for years. Will be interested to see others comments and experiences, it used to be exhorbitantly expensive but now seems to be quite an everyday thing.

Hi Ladies.A friend of mine had it done by a Consultant in our hospital. But he did it for free,so not sure of cost-she was a nurse on his ward. But she found it very good and it seems to have lasted. She was a bit stiff and sore for a few days, but she felt it was well worth it.Oopsidaisy.

Hi TJay, Yes had it done on my left leg four weeks ago and am due to go in for the right leg in a couple of weeks. Had it on NHS so cant help re what the costs are, but it is well worth it. My veins were quite big and there is a marked reduction already and this gets better again over time I am told. Things you need to consider are, you cant drive for a week or more after. ( you need to check what your own insurance says as well) Flying; they recommend waiting for four weeks plus. You need to go on regular walks daily and be in a position to sit with your leg elevated when not walking. ( I mention that in case it affects your return to work etc.) The op itself is pretty painless. If you want to PM me with any specific questions you have I can give you the answers hot off the press, I even still have some of the bruises!!

Well, I went for my consultation on Tuesday. The doctor used ultrasound on my vein to find out where the problem starts. He recommended treatment whereby a foam mixture is injected into the vein which makes it shrink and close. I ended up having the treatment there and then, took 2 minutes and was painless. The only pain is that I have to wear a full length surgical stocking for 2 weeks to stop the vein opening up again. After that, there's only a 2% chance of it ever occurring again. Cost £365 overall (consultation £50, scan £100 and treatment the rest). After the treatment, I drove back to work, picked the kids up later and just carried on with my life! Definately better than surgery!

I'm thinking about going to get an emerging varicose vein checked out by my GP before it gets so bad and starts to give me problems. Do they automatically refer you to surgeons jeank in your experience? It aches a bit now and I was wondering what the first course of treatment is usually. Thanks

Varicose veins are not usually a serious health problem, but they are unsightly and can cause pain, swelling and skin changes. Healthy veins pump blood back to the heart with a series of one-way valves that prevent the backward flow of blood and the build up of pressure. When varicose veins cause leg symptoms such as pain, heaviness, tiredness, non healing sores, areas of changes in skin color along ankle treatment should be considered. Conservative management with support hose and avoiding prolonged standing is sometimes all that is required, but sometimes this is not enough. Prior to other treatments an ultrasound examination of the leg veins is done. This simple test guides physicians in deciding which therapy, if any, is best.
