Because my daughter has severe health problems we are unable to get away as a family at the moment. I desperately need to get away for a few days but, at the same time, can't seem to rustle up a great deal of enthusiasm for going on my own anywhere. I would really appreciate any suggestions/ideas/guidance as I am feeling very uninspired. I would like to do something different from a spa break (arent I difficult!)

Hi Fuchsia Do you have any special interests? I was thinking whether you enjoy painting or crafts? There are lots of special interest holidays where you can enjoy your hobby amongst like minded people and be looked after so you don't need to do any cooking.
Welcome to the forum if I haven't already said hello. Foxie x.

How about Bath? A wonderful place with a spa as well. (Although it is totally out of bounds for me as that is where my 'husband' is living with his mistress!!! )
York, Stratford-upon-Avon and places in Devon are also very pretty and interesting.
Hope you find somewhere as you deserve a break to come home refreshed.

I had been thinking the same thing as I have to do a holiday on my own. Last year daughter came to Crete with me to my friends villa, but I can't expect her to keep propping me up.
I was thinking of Dorset as it is very pretty, I know it a bit and I can run home fairly easily, how sad is that.
Bath is lovely, but I lived there for a lot of my life, still there is a lot to do but it is very lovely, you might enjoy it, as is Stratford-upon-Avon, although I have only done a quick visit when looking at unis for daughter and then got lost on the way back !!!

Two thoughts spring to mind for me. I would either book myself into a spa where you will find lots of other women on their own or I would try one of the 'single traveller' holidays. Many folks think they are only for singles but in actual fact the are for anyone wanting to go on holiday on their own. The advantage with both of these approached is you will always have company for dinner if you want it. Failing that, I would suggest a city break where there is lots to occupy you during the day and hotels are used to people dining on their own at night. I've done both approaches frequently and always had a great time.

Hi Joyce
twice in the first couple of years my mumwent abroad on her own...first time I booked it as a birthday present and she went to Maderia, then 2nd time she did it her self and went to cyprus for 2 weeks, she did lots of tourssts things, and found that some of the the women who were there just with a sister or friend , spoke to her and asked her to join them...
I love the north os soctland but it can be remote and quiet....another favourite place is perranporth, cornwall...its a small village right down on the beach...
Do you have any hobbies , like cooking or do you like wine? or art? as they have holidays which incorporate specific things, again you could have the solitude but also the company option....
or a city break.....
here is a spa link and they do have some special offers

I'm a big fan of the Channel Islands, far enough away to feel as if you are abroad, but not so far that you have masses of travelling to do if you are only away for a few days. Nice beaches, great shopping, lovely restaurants, plenty of places of interest and always the chance to island hop to Guernsey/Herm/Sark or Alderney for a bit of a difference. Some nice walks to be had as well if you enjoy that. i know it's not strictly the Uk, but it is sort of
Just take the plunge, I think once you've booked something it'll give you a lift just having something to look forward to.
It's also possible to rent cottages for 3 days if you fancy time on your own, though youmay prefer to be surrounded by people.
Let us know what you g et up to

Hi there, I would also recommend the Channel Islands. In fact, we are going next week. Jersey is lovely , and a bit busier than Guernsey, still quiet though, compared to the Mainland. I also really like the Cotswolds.

thanks for all these suggestions ...plenty of food for thought. I'm sure you're right chilla - once I've booked something I'll feel better about it. I do like the Channel Islands but feel it might be better to go somewhere we haven't been as a family or at least for a long time. Just got to wait for a hospital appointment date to come through for my daughter so I can work around that ..but I want to have some plans in place ..lots more hours browsing on the internet I reckon. Any more thoughts gratefully received!

Why not try Hay on Wye and not just for the festival. Beautiful countryside and friendly people.

Why don't you have a look at Skyros, who have an Isle of Wight centre as well as their original Greek set up. They are totally geared to single travellers and have weekends offering a variety of activities where you can meet up with others who are having some time away alone.

Farncombe Estate in the Cotswolds do lots of weekend courses, everything from 'well being' (learn Indian Head Massage type of thing) painting, writing/literature, crafts, singing, and 'appreciation' type courses etc. I haven't been yet but a friend goes often (on her own) and loves trying different things.

Hi Fuchsia I guess it depends on what you want from your time alone. Taraloka is a buddhist retreat centre for women in Shropshire. Several women in the yoga class I attend have been and they really rate it- you don't need to be buddhist or have a great deal of experience in meditation. I'm a bit of a scardy cat when it comes to travelling alone but am planning to go later this year. Hope you enjoy your time wherever you end up - it sounds as if you are in need of some R&R. Hope everything goes well with your daughter. x

I would choose a city over a spa break I think. Bath, Edinburgh, York, Cambridge, Oxford or Canterbury top of my list ..

As Bill Bryson said 'if you haven't been to Durham, go there at once, it's wonderful'
Fuschia, I hope you have managed to find a place to go and that your daughter is ok. Whereabouts in the country do you live?

Hi Georgie - no I am still procrastinating at the moment - have not been able to book anything yet as we've been waiting for a hospital appointment to come through for her. We heard about that at the beginning of the week so I've got no excuse now!
