thin peeling nails
      #366944 - 02/04/2009 14:49

Hi! I am new to all this - nice to meet you all!

Does anyone have any advice for thin, peeling nails. there seems to be nothing I can do. I have regular manicures, have been using the Jessica Critical Care, Fusion and Phenomenoil in an attempt to nurture my nails, but they are still extremely weak and my thumb nails especially split so much they actually look like they are bitten down to the quick. I have a good diet, do lots of exercise - am really at my wit's end. I heard that silica is a good supplement to use... any ideas???

Hello Joy and welcome to the forum!

My nails used to be just like yours, thin and peeling. I too, used all the Jessica nail treatments, and also had fibreglass extensions for a long time, until I got fed up with all the upkeep.

How long have you been using the Phenomen oil? I found that the oil worked the best - used every night for about four months, on bare, unvarnished nails. My nails now grow so long I have to cut them - unheard of before! I now only use cuticle oil two to three times a week , nowadays a cheap version from Boots.

Gel overlays are less damaging to the nails and look great, either left natural or finished with nail polish. They just protect the nails whilst your own grow normally.

Also take a nail/hair/skin supplement like Perfectil or Asda own label - really good.

Make sure you go to a recommended nail technician as there are a lot of cowgirls out there!

Hi Joy welcome to the forums - sorry can't be of any help as I have the same problem and have tried most things. If you find something that works let me know.

Hello Joy - the Dr one that Glitterqueen mentions is Dr Lewinn's Renunail. It's brilliant. It's the only thing that has ever worked for me, and I have tried everything else under the sun. My nails were in a terrible condition for years and years, partly due to statins or BP pills but they are really strong now and I'm thrilled. It's expensive (£20) but worth every penny.
You put on 2 coats, then a coat every day for 5 days, then repeat the process up to 25 days then take it all off and leave it for 1-2 weeks then start again.
I have managed to get a bottle from eBay but more people are cottoning on to it now so it's not that easy. Debenhams sell it.

Also recommended on here some weeks back was OPI nail envy I have being using it and my nails have certainly improved.Much stronger and not breaking or peeling...I think it is about £16 from superdrug..apply 2 coats then a coat every other day x 5 days then start again.Good luck whatever you decide.

Yes, I posted about this product.

Dr Lewinns has transformed my nails and nothing else ever worked before. A fantastic find and not at all damaging to the nails. A bottle lasts for ages, I bought mine in October and am only half way through it.

I have been using Dr Lewins for the last 3 weeks - now having a break as it says. My nails are better but a long way to go yet. You use it with an oil based product, which helps a lot, brilliant on my toe nails !

I shall persevere, but wish they would actually grow !

I have been using Dr Lewinns for about a month now. I use the clear varnish every day and there is also a nail oil to use on the cuticles each night. So far my nails are not very long but they are in the best condition they have ever been. All the splitting and breaking has completely stopped and I would say that this has been something that I have battled with for years. Over the month the splits have grown out and I have had a couple of broken nails but they all look really even and straight now. I am hoping that in another month they will be really long and strong.

Thanks, Vinca, I have only been using the Phenomenoil for a month or so, and in conjunction with the critical care, which is like a varnish as you probably know. Maybe I will take your advice and use it on bare nails, keep persevering and hopefully will see results in a few months time!

Hi Joy

Just saw your post I used to have the same problem and I have used Vit E oil to sort it out. Any kind will do, I buy the capsules in boots and cut them so the oil spills out, them massage it into the cuticle part of the nail as this is the living part and the state of the nail is a direct reflection of the state of the cuticle. Since I started using it my nails have become really strong and now I only use once a month / so, when I started I used it about once / twice a week.

Good luck Helen

A young woman at a stall in a shopping centre stopped me and offered me a free nail treatment - I laughed because I knew she would then want to sell me something but I allowed her to have her wicked way with me, and walked away having bought nothing.

BUT . . . . the treatment was so simple. It was one of those four-sided buffers (she was marketing a super-duper one which cost, no doubt, an arm and a leg but you can get them from Boots' at a fraction of the cost) which you use more or less according to directions. Since using mine, it's amazing; nails shine, with no polish except elbow grease; no splitting; no flaking; no ridges. I have added into the treatment "NuNail" (also from Boots', also not expensive, in fact cheaper than Boots' own equivalent) and - WOW.

The whole "treatment" takes just a few minutes. I do mine in bed in the morning, before getting up, and last thing at night, also in bed, to interested looks from my partner. I also carry the NuNail cream and dot some on whenever I think about it.

There's also a very old remedy; rubber gloves. OK, you do have to wash your hands, themselves, in water, occasionally, but other than that - rubber gloves, over a nice thick layer of Body Shop Hemp hand protector.

Before using this buffer thingummy, the best condition my nails have ever been in have been the times I've been in high mountain areas (e.g.Himalay, High Atlas) where water is very scarce. That taught me something; hence the fetish about rubber gloves.

Best of luck

thanks toffeekit. I actually have one of those 4 way buffers but must say I only use it from time to time. - will do the 'treatment' daily.

Rubber gloves-- oh yes, I know, those things that are in a plastic box under my kitchen sink that I NEVER use. Guilty as charged. I try to remember, but always find I've done the job in hand before I actually do.

With all the great advice (thanks girls!) which I will try, I hopefully will be seeing results before too long.

Another Dr Lewins fan here - its brilliant and yes Debenhams have it in stock.

I also put a small bottle with a dropper filled with olive oil next to the TV and when I am watching just drop a dot of oil onto each finger and massage - does wonder for the cuticles.
