Varicose veins
      #33768 - 15/09/2007 21:02

Many years ago I had stripping of varicose veins. After having the children my legs resembled an ordnance survey map with the motorways of the entire UK running in every direction. It helped a bit but it didn't do anything for the telangiectasia on my ankle (vast area of knobbly veins covering the whole outer ankle) For this reason I mostly wear trousers and jeans.

Well the other day one of the veins in my thigh must have thrombosed because it was sooo painful and lumpy(Hence the very stylish TED stockings that I am modelling today

Now ,I have read about some sort of Laser treatment that is available now for varicose veins. Is this suitable for knarled old veins like mine or just the odd vein here and there? Has anybody had this? Do you have to go privately or is it offered on the NHS?

Sadly suffer from the same problems Sonata. Had one leg stripped, which worked well, but have now 100 's of spider veins everywhere on my legs, very unsightly in the summer. Have tried evrything. Laser works only on superficial veins and in my case, they have come back on either side of the treated areas. I've also had sclerotherapy , where they inject a solution into the vein to shrink it. Again, some success, but they always seem to come back. Have now given up, just too expensive, as none of these are offered on the NHS. I just use false tan (every other day), and that hides them a bit, so don't look to horrible on the beach/pool (I am in the pool 3 times a week, so my legs matter to me).

Try and see whether you can have the veins in your ankles stripped and I would certainly advise that you see your GP pronto if you think you may have thrombosis clots, as they can be very dangerous. But otherwise, sorry have no other advice.

Thank you for your reply Birgit.I do have an appointment tomorrow and no doubt he will refer me to the vascular guys. I think my legs are a lost cause.I rarely wear skirts because of this. It's very annoying. I even considered a tattoo on my ankle but hubby is worried that the skin on that area is already fragile and I could make things worse.

I remember having an appointment with the camouflage lady at the hospital many years ago.She sorted me out with Dermablend covering make up.But it was a hassle having to apply the cream colour then the setting powder afterwards.
It sounds as if I am too far gone for laser tretment. Alas!!

Hi Sonata, Just thinking about varicose veins make me shudder, I was only 19yrs of age when my left knee looked as though the M1 was running around it. I had the veins stripped but suffered for the next 30yrs (jobe's comforter arn't I)with a leg ulcer, I had 25 skin grafts to help heal the ulcer and it finally healed in 1998. So I can understand you not being able to wear skirts I never could and only wear them in winter when tights are the order of the day.Hope that you will get sorted with the vascular guys. But dont delay if you have pain in your thigh or any other parts of your limbs. Good Luck

I also think that Varicose Veins are one of the few medical conditions which though being wide spread are greatly misunderstood and ignored by people.
Varicose Veins are often mistakenly believed to be a cosmetic problem. The fact is, Varicose Veins is very much a disease - one with cosmetic manifestations and often little pain, but a disease nonetheless. Thanks for sharing.I totally agree with you.
As blood rushes through our legs, the veins send it back to the heart. However, over a period of time, due to the force of gravity, the veins lose their ability to push the blood upwards, causing the blood to settle down in certain areas of the veins. This condition is known as varicose veins.
