Spinal fusion
      #320039 - 27/01/2009 16:43

Does anyone have any experience of a successful spinal fusion operation. My mother-in-law, aged eighty, has been offered this op to alleviate her sciatica pain.
I can't find any positive results in elderly patients and fear her situation could be worsened.

Hi I know 3 people who have had this type of surgery and it seems to go better on elderly patients then younger ones. The siatica pain has responded thank god but any surgery is risky. Its the anesthetic.

Good luck

As a nurse, I absolutely agree that the anaesthetic is the worse thing in elderly people. I've also had 5 spinal fusions, in my lumbar and cervical spine, over a period of 30 years. Nowadays they can often put in an artificial disc, as an alternative to fusion, which is much easier to recover from... I would have a word with her consultant to see if she might be suitable for this. Not everywhere does this surgery, but if she's suitable, I def think it would be worth looking into.
