Now that we are all into walking that little bit more, try these suggestions to get more out of your walk.
Instead of sit-ups, (tedious), engage your transversus abdominus muscle by pulling your belly button in towards your spine and hold for 10 seconds - this is called an abdominal pull. I tones deep into your waist and and helps support our core.
It's like a two for one offer, but in exercise benefits.

Chilla.............it is too early in the morning to think about exercises and 2-4-1 offers!!!!! As for walking a bit more................yes ok then I will get rid of the excuses. I have been doing by rehab exercises every day and they are getting easier. So next week I start including the 15 min x 2 walk in as well.
Pulling belly button towards spine...........I think mine has got lost amongst the fat!!!!! but will try and locate it to do this........

Ok Chilla, if I can locate my belly button I will give it a go, it must be here somewhere! I am still enjoying my BB and walking with my ipod boys, about to walk to the hairdresser, then to the bakers. Fresh bread and coffee Mmmmm. Splash you did make me laugh, morning Thimble.

Splash, you've had your hair done. If you don't mind me saying tho' now that you've lost all that weight, perhaps a little op to get rid of the exercise skin.
I stand in front of a mirror to find my bellybutton, I can't see it over my chesticles

Good morning everyone...I m still feeling under the weather, but managed to do both ny DVDs yesterday..mile walk and pilates.
My 'mile walk' dvd came with a book called "Walk Away the Pounds" by Leslies Sanson. It is described as a "6 week programe that helps you burn fat tone muscle and feel great" I bought the book from a shop (a cheap bookshop..for £2!), I have seen it for sale on amazon for about £12 .
The dvd is great..it is a low impact walking "workout"(don't let that put you off), that you can do if you have the odd 20 mins but don't want to venture outside!
Chilla..great idea about engaging you core muscles...I have been doing that whilst doing pilates..and my waist is definately more toned.
Have a good day everyone!

Sorry Thimble...forgot to say....fantastic that your exercises have started to get easier.Hopefully when you start doing you 15 min walks they too will start to become easier.Yesterday, as I said I felt really unmotivated, but once I had done 15mins of my walk dvd(I took it really easily) I felt so much better, mentally.xx

Hi Chilla, Thimble, Splash, Whitleybay and Blossom.
Chilla - does pulling your tummy in like that whilst standing do the same job as sit ups and pulling legs up whilst laying down? If so - great - I'd rather do tummy ex. like that.

Apparently so AlexP, so while you are doing the ironing, talking on the phone to a friend, waiting in a queue, pull that tummybutton to you spine and hold for 10 seconds. And it's supposed to have the same effect as the basic crunch. Can't see it working on the obliques though.

Hi everyone, doing the stomach thing is also great for your back as it gets everything in the correct position. Today was a wonderful day here.Bright, sunny with a touch of warmth in the sun.We went for a walk along the sea front again today. It was packed, everyone else seemed to be doing the same thing. It lifts my mood to realise Spring will soon be here.Think how much fitter we'll all be by then, ready for our summer clothes and waiting to flounce!

Hi can I join you? I have read the MM posts and as I am an apple shape with the waist spreading more than is healthy, I want to lose some inches from there the most. I have been doing Pilates regularly for over a year as my back needs lots of work and Pilates works well for me. To get the most from tummy tuck exercise you should breathe in first then as you exhale SLOOOWLY thats the time to pull in the muscles. On MM13 I had to go to St. Toms for a manometry test, where they put a tube in your nose and into your gullet to test PH reading, anyway I had to have a thinner one to keep in for 24hrs. I did a good 10 minutes walk from station to St Toms and really felt the muscles in my shins that evening. After the trip home by taxi and back again next day I felt in need of some more walking so caught Bus home and got off at Docs to collect a presciption and walked up the hill counting the steps. 1,200+ so my muscles ache even more. Today I was working [at home] and as the weather was looking better I texted my friend and said I was going for a short walk at lunchtime. We did a good 15 mins which is probably more than 1000??? So I am not feeling so guilty and hope it's the start of a fitter me. If I don't manage to post every day you will have to forgive me, work is totally anti-social but I will be browsing briefly to keep up with you all. Good luck and Happy Moving. Cecilia.xx

Hi cecillia, Lovely to meet you.Join in when you can.If you want to get total steps mania it helps to get a pedometer.Knowing how many steps you are doing spurs you on to do more.Thats my thinking anyway, doesn't always work that way.Sometimes I decide to ignore it! We are trying to motivate each other to get fit by any way we can.We are all at different levels of fitness so can't all manage the same things but try to do our best. All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Hi Cecilia, drop by whenever you can. Broadly speaking on a pavement type environment, 10 minutes is around 900 - 1100 steps unless you walk terrifically fast or terrifically slowly.
