Cheap clothes!
      #314952 - 22/01/2009 20:46

How come everyone seems to be able to buy clothes from places like Primark and Matalan and they fit?I dont think i have ever found anything, ever, that fitted properly. Now i am not a woman who wears expensive clothes and i simply love a bargain(i am an obsessive TK MAXX junkie person who has to have an hour spare for just LOOKING)so what is it?Is it me?Have i a really odd shape?Do i manage to visit the stores when they only have the crap left?I would be very interested in your experiences.

I have tried buying cheap clothes and hate them, they dont fit they feel awful and then I feel awful. But saying that I NEVER pay full price for my clothes, I shop in the sales and I am TK MAXX's best customer - but only for the expensive stuff that has been discounted! I have done a lot of research into this and my conclusion is:

Some people can carry cheap clothes off and look fab.....
I can't!

I managed to get a Paul Costello jacket and an Episode jacket for a song at TK MAXX recently.Very unusual for me to leave with nothing. But,you do need to rummage and have a lot of time.

I have bought cheap clothes in primark and matalan before and still buy the odd thing but also find that they don't always fit well.
I love monsoon and principles but tend to only buy in their sales and have had some very good bargains there.

you are right Helen, you cant pop into tkmaxx, you have to be prepared to spend time flicking through the racks, I just love it, I find it very theraputic! some of my friends absolutely hate it but for me its chilling time - I go alone and spend however long it takes!

I bought a skirt from Primark and loved it so much I bought it in 4 colours cos it was the only thing that fitted.

Now I keep having to take in tucks, in the waist, as they haven't got proper waistbands, and the material is so thin they stretch.

But I am still wearing them.

I have had a few things from TK Maxx, like you said Helen you have to rummage through them, I needed an evening dress and picked a real nice one plus two jackets nice fits too, but you have to be prepered to spend time looking and you do not see a lot of the same items like other shops.

I'm not very good at finding bargains either. I am the person who pays full price and then finds the item reduced 50%+ the following week!

I used to love rummaging around Primark but my 11 year old wont go near the place for ethical reasons.I have yet to explain to her that most high street retailers do not trade ethically, but I am so proud that she has taken a stand on this that I wont tell her..otherwise she wont have any clothes!!

I love tk maxx, but would only buy good labels. Also use Ebay, have had some really good bargains, and Dress Agencies. Find that Primark things do not fit well. Also my daughter has a thing about the ethical issues. I think that all school children have seen the program on slave labour

I tend to mix and match - but no particular shops. I do buy off ebay too - and I like Wallis and Next.

Happy Shopping ladies .Mix and Match is the name of the game I think!

I'm a tall size 24 so you can discount any of the cheaper brands and also Next and Monsoon. I wear a mixture of Marks, Evans and my Catalogue. Gave up on Elvi as they are so boring.
I've been trying to find a winter coat I like but I think I'll have to wait til next winter now - so fed up with BLACK!

Like you helen1954 I can never find bargains in any of those places that fit me in my places if you know what I mean. I am not adverse to a quickie in TK Max. You have a big advantage over me though you can get into all those tiny sized things that are in the sales that won't fit a thigh on the rest of us

Everytime I go back to Dublin I shop at Penneys(primark)they are so cheap we don`t have anything like it in Spain,
I usually get bras knicks sleepwear socks the tshirts are great they don`t last long but for 3 or 4 € a pop who cares,
I love tkmax too but never have the time for a good rummage and the dressing rooms always are crowded, I am in Dublin next week maybe I get into the shops ealry and give them a go

I've bought t-shirts in Primark but they really dont last very long before little holes appear or they shrink!

I was talking to someone who works for T.K.Maxx and I was saying that I dont tend to go in there because its always so untidy. She told me their philisophy is that they see shopping with them like a treasure hunt, you never know what you'll unearth if you look hard enough. That made sense. Still didnt entice me though, so I guess I am not in their target audience.

Monsoon and Per Una are my favourites - Splash if you are sad and elderly then so am I.

How do you categorise cheap clothes? I have a favourite long wool coat in emerald green. Many people admire it, but what they don't know is that it's over 22 years old!! I bought it at an Alexon shop and it was quite expensive (for me). However, after 22 years, it's probably the best value garment in my wardrobe.

The Primark garments are aimed at the young, to be worn and chucked away when the next 'rage' comes along. Not really what we're looking for as sensible ladies, is it?

Maria

(currently wearing pink/red Per Una top with Phase Eight red ballet cardigan, and jeans. All bought in the sales!)

HI psyche
I am 5ft 8 and size 22 and wondered if you had tried Ann Harvey or M and Co as they sometimes have things which are not too dear. Also get quite good basic t shirts etc from Lands End mail order...I know what you mean about coats too, even if they say 22/24 on them I often find the sleeves are too short for me.
Good luck GG x
