Giving Up Alcohol !!!!
      #314365 - 22/01/2009 13:23

Well I'm on my third week of diet exercise and no booze. My tipple is generally wine (white)even though Ive had many years of prcatice I get very drunk very quickly, I eat too much after drinking and get terrible hangovers. Here I am on my third week feeling proud that Ive stuck to everything, as in completely cut out Booze eating healthy diet & really getting into Exercise. But most of all I miss the wine terribly. Nights out are just not the same!I dont relax like I use too and definately feel very boring. Im off to a friends party on Saturday and have decided to go back to my usual tipple but try cutting down instead of giving up completely (my God I sound like an alcoholic Old habits use to be drinking two/three nights per week as am a social butterfly. Have tried changing my drink but hate everything else.I Have a fantastic husband who cant understand why I need to set such rigid goals in the first place. Anyone else out there feeling the same?

sandyd, welcome to the forum. The trouble with trying to cut down on Alcohol is that if it has such a big effect on you,you will probably forget your good intentions as soon as you've had 1 drink. If I were you I persevere and cut it out altogether. It's supposed to take 6 weeks to kick a habit and drinking has become a habit for you.
You sound as if you are stressed if you find relaxing without alcohol difficult.Could you try finding some other way to relax instead?I don't want to sound like I'm preaching but I did rely on alcohol to relax when I was in a very stressful job and I'm sure it didn't do me any good at all.Fortunately I never got hangovers but I probably would have cut down much earlier if I had.

Why have you cut out alcohol, is it just to lose weight?
If so then G&T (slimline tonic) is OK.
My OH has been told to stay off alcohol for 3 weeks as he got acute pancreatitis when we were in the States. He doesn't seem to mind and doesn't have a problem ..actually he now makes himself decaff coffee in the evening and because I'm driking alone...I drink less, stange but true.
Good luck with the diet too...it takes strong willpower to succeed!

I would persevere if I were you.Three weeks isn't really that long to adapt to not drinking but it is still a great achievement!
I suppose it depends why you drink, but if you feel you can't function/relax in social situations then it sounds unhealthy to be honest.Drinking has become so insidious,it's easy to forget that it's a socially acceptable drug and you can easily become dependant.
I suppose it depends on why you want to stop as well.Maybe you need to reflect more on this.I must admit that diet, exercise and no alcohol is a lot to take on at one go!Especially if they're New Year's Resolutions.
Persnally I used to drink too much every day really and also used alcohol as a social lubricant. So I fully understand that social situations can become more difficult.I found not drinking liberating and am still very proud of myself for having stopped, but 5 years down the line I still miss it.But that's me.I would say that it's not stopping that's difficult but keeping the momentum going if you know what I mean.
If you really want to stop, give it a bit longer. But don't be hard on yourself if you change your mind.Hope this helps you, take care (and let me know how it goes?)Roberta x

I agree that if you can tough it out and kick the habit, it's the best option (think of it like kicking sugar in tea/coffee - it makes the tea/coffee taste vile at first, but one day you try putting sugar back in and THAT tastes vile instead!).

If total abstinance is too gruelling, can you try 'tricks'? One trick I use frequently is basicaly 'cutting' wine - make a spritzer with fizzy mineral water, or tonic, or low-cal lemonade, or a fruit cocktail for example. White is great for that, as is rose. One drink I make in the summer (OK, not exactly right now!) is to have a bottle of cheap rose which I then 'cut' with a lot of stuff like those non-alcoholic fruity juices with peach or strawberry flavours. They are lovely and cool and refreshing, and, best of all, you sip them not gulp them as they are fizzy, and it takes a good long while to get to the bottmn of the glass, unlike a wine glass.

Another trick is to say when you go out 'Yes, I'll have some wine, but not yet' and spend the first half hour to an hour just sipping mineral water, and THEN 'rewarding' yourself with a glass of white wine later in the evening.

I think the bottom line is we all have different psychologies when it comes to depriving ourselves of something we want, and if we can find a way to 'work with our psychology' we'll have the greatest chance of success.

Good luck - Julie.

dear Ladies

you know how much I have been arguing with somebody's view regarding drunken women, on this forum. My first post was "What's wrong with wine?".
You might all be bored to read me again. However I can't stop myself to recall your dignity and care for a healthy life when I read the many threads about your drinking habits, in the the last days there were at least three topics related to this "passion" only.

What to say? I am a fan and a humble conosseur of wine and this "culture" has probably saved me with the majority of the italian women (I don't know the French) from becoming a alcoholist. Notwithstanding my depression, jobless, marriage crisis and so on, that went on in my life just as in yours.

I have zero tolerance for the trendy "social lubrificants culture", if it leads you to become addicted, It's just what the "alcohol business" aims to. And of course, you have those models to follow right? Vips, models, celeb....who are used to enhance this losing culture.
Ok I stop here for now.
My suggestion is a paradox: if you are habited to hit the bottle, why don't you register for a Wine Taste course at your place?
It's a way to transform the habit into something pretty interesting and stylish too while you relax your nerves socially.

Beba
