Has anyone had experience of a memory foam mattress topper (overlay). I am tempted to get one but am not sure how beneficial they actually are. Before I fork out for one I would appreciate advice as to whether they are worth the money and recommendation as to where to buy one. Thanks in anticipation.

We haven't got one but when we were away at the weekend the hotel bed did and it was very comfortable.

we all love ours, have since bought a new double bed with the topper incorporated, wouldn't sleep without it now, makes the bed super-comfy. If you have a Matalan near you they have some reasonably priced ones.

Fantastic, do get one. We first came across them when we were in Texas last year, they had them but they were like egg boxes, but very very comfortable. I sleps so well. When we came home I started looking and got 1 on QVC. Wish I had known about Matalan!

The warmeth is what I like about them too Pysche, no need for an electric blanket, I fall asleep much quicker. May be a different story in the summer but then I always change the duvet for a lower tog one & sleep with a window open - can you tell I love & need my sleep

our matress is memory foam, its been a nightmare since we got it. Far too warm. We have reduced down to a 2.5 tog quilt. The mattress just heats up and heats up, to the point its too hot to lie on. I'm often reduced to lying on the floor while it cools down. In winter its ok till about 3am... its next on the hitlist to exit the house.

Wow, that really surprises me. I have noticed that the bed seems much warmer since we got the topper but just put it down to hot flushes.

I'm very interested in the comments about the warmth of these mattresses since I've been pondering what to do about our bed which is comfortable but very cold to get into. I've been wondering about a sort of fleecy underblanket. Does anyone use one of these? I did recently buy a memory foam pillow which I'm very pleased with.

We needed to buy a new bed and I went out with the intention of buying a memory mattress. I was told in the store that if I was a warm person in bed, it wasn't for me. They are too hot. I ended up buying a posture sprung mattress with Latex.

Since most of you think the memory foam topper is too hot, I decided to put an old duvet on top of my mattress so this morning, once I had done that, I got back into bed to try it out and woke up two hours later. I think its made a difference and I haven`t spent any money.

Bit late to add comments but ours has been a bit of an expensive disaster. Bought a new bed with a deep sprung matters with a memory foam topper. OH lasted 4 hrs until his back got to painful to stay there and went back to the original now in the spare room. I tried it for a few nights and realised once we had moved back into our original bed that it was the cause of my backache. Now trying to sell the whole thing without much success. It does get very warm. I would rather have an electric fitted underblanket that can be turned off. We have slept on beds in hotels and in the USA that have an attached topper but just seem to be padded filling.

I lasted a bit longer than you but I got so fed up with it I went out and bought another mattress - the shop took the original one away. Expensive mistake!

Always, always try before you buy - not for just 5 minutes - at least half an hour - all good bed shops will allow you to do this.
Memory foam mattresses abound these days from the original (still excellent) to the cheap imitations. Bear in mind that the top of the range topper is almost as expensive as their mattress because it is the top part of the mattress which is made of the memory foam - the under part is composition. With the original company you can certainly try before you buy for up to 60 days and return if not satisfied.
Personally would not have one, but we have equal amounts of customers who swear by them. Prefer my pocket sprung wonderful mattress and put a duvet on the top before the fitted bottom sheet - they are so cheap these days that you can renew as and when you need to.
I do have a memory foam pillow which is wonderful as an under pillow with a soft one on the top - perfect for me.
The biggest advantage of a good memory foam topper or mattress is that they are less prone to dust mites if treated within manufacturers guidelines.

We have a Tempur foam mattress and we love it. It seemed very expensive at the time..I think about £1000, just for the mattress. It's guaranteed 15 years though and we've had it for about 6. I don't get a bad back nowadays, and I haven't found it too warm.....but then I do feel the cold. The only downside is that it's very difficult to turn or to move it anywhere...it falls about like it's rubber!

Hi Psyche The shop have offered us £300 to take the mattress back but having done some internet searching just to buy those particular one would cost getting on for £700. Am trying the credit card route now but don't hold out a lot of hope.

Have a memory foam topper and wouldn,t,couldn,t be without it.Have start of arthritis in hip and the difference in comfort has been unbelievable.I have a house in Spain and spend alternate months there.Found when I was there the pain in hip was very bad.Searched hard until I found one for my bed there.I don't think the temperatures here are anything like the summer heat in southern Spain and I have had no discomfort from being too hot.Go for it!

lol Issi - we have occasionally had people fall asleep on a bed!
Tempur toppers start at £400 for a double, so not a purchase to be taken lightly - we let customers take as long as they need...
