I am for my sins an apple shape guess I have to thank my Mum for that. The trouble is I don't know how to dress my shape now that I'm 53. I'm a size 14 and 5' 2" I'd like to be like the curvy or tall and willowy ladies in the magazine who always look so good. So ladies it's down to you - HELP!!!!!

I'm no Gok but I think you should wear separate skirts and tops - dark colours from the waist down and brighter colours on top to draw attention to the neck and face! Layer tops as well with different colours to compliment each other, always use accessories. Skirts should be below the knee with a heal. Try petite ranges in Principles, Monsoon, Wallis and Debenhams has a personal shopper to dress you (I think sometimes this can be a little off putting, but my friend swears by it!) Remember never to wear clothes that swamp you as this can make you look bigger, but you sound in perfect proportions to me.
Remember make up and hair and to walk tall - Go for it girl - Good Luck.

Thanks Sue I need a boost and at least I know i'm shopping in the right places as I shop online at both Principles and Monsoon. I had my colours done a few years ago so I can and do wear bright colours so that's another tick in the box.
Not having a daughter I guess I just needed to check I was doing something right. Thanks again for the boost.

Anytime enjoy shopping - Bath has some good shops I often call in after visiting my sister-in-law at Bradford on Avon, or I can rent out my daughter if you like?? She loves shopping and is always trying to update my wardrope so that she can have something too!! It won't be cheap.

I'm an apple shape too. There are lots of us around. Getting older does not help. And to think I was so skinny in my teens and twenties, I wanted to be bigger! Both Gok and Trinny and Susannah have advise about apple shapes on the web but I am afraid I can't remember the addresses. I'm 54 and 5'3". I tend to wear heels or wedges to emphasise my long legs and miss out the middle bit. Belts are a complete no-no, unless I want to wear them round my neck! Jumpers and tops have to be slightly longer and a pattern hides the tum. I wear more skirts and tops and love dresses but they can't be waisted.

I tried a wrap style dress once. Disaster. Kept coming apart. However, a top or dress that looks like a wrap style but is in fact sewn down works a treat

I am not sure what shape I am officially but....... I look in the mirror and I would say I have large hips, no waist, big tummy, nice boobs, old looking face. All in all not something I want to look at first thing in the morning!!!! Thinking of covering all mirrors...............hahahahaha Does this make me apple shape or just fat and overweight and old age overtaking??????

Hi fellow apples, I'm 5'4" and shrinking, size 16 and a bit and 61 years old. Apple is a worse shape than pear as fat around the middle is bad for the heart. No matter how I try to loose weight, and I am loosing some, the 'apple' still remains around my middle. Think I should exercise really but not sure what to do. Can't really bring myself to go to the gym and flaunt my body!! Also it is expensive. Just have to keep eating the lettuce leaves I think.

I too am an apple. One of the first and most important things to do is to get a good bra. This will lift the boobs up and at least make it LOOK as if you have a waist. I am 5ft 4in and size 16 and 59 in March. I wear wrap dresses quite a lot and if I wear separates then always with a belt either round the middle or sort of hanging down at the front. This gives the impression of a narrower body part. I hope that helps

Walking helps lose the weight and doesn't cost anything. Take an ipod or radio or just put the world to rights in your head. I love it

Hi Butterfly5 don't worry there are a lot of us apples around !! I have researched the problem for a while now and I think the solution lies in fitted top and fuller bottoms. A nice gypsy skirt, not too full, with a plain fitted or semi fitted ( not tight to show rolls) top in a darker colour looks great also with fuller pants.
I like skirts with a yolk around the tum (flat piece)then fuller to just below the knee. I try to wear a darker colour on top and lighter trousers or skirt. Also very slimming are longer tops tapered and finishing just below the hips and def V necks they create a longer slimmer upper body shape. I am not familiar with UK shops so can't recommend any to you but just try out a few of the ideas and see..Good Luck sweety

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for your replies. It's so nice to know I'm not the only one struggling. I guess for me it's an issue as I still work and the dress code is anything from smart casual to suits Mon-Thurs and jeans on Friday. I never know what to wear.
MrsS I know it's an added expense at this time but I go to a ladies only gym where the age group of the members is 15 - 79 and we are all shapes and sizes it's great because at the end of the day we are all trying to get fitter.
