Update on friend I mentoned last year & who has the big C
      #305492 - 12/01/2009 19:45

I have just got a text from her saying she has had her operation and all went as well as can be expected.
Sadly she had to have her breast removed due to the size and advancement of the cancerous lump.

As expected her OH and son are with her for this evenings visiting time so I have agreed to go tomorrow afternoon.
What on earth can I take in for her. I hate to go and see her empty handed. Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.

I must say a big thank you to all those who have keep in touch, enquired and PM me recently as to how my friend was doing. I will be sure to pass on your best wishes to her.

Dear dbvercherry - don't worry about what to take your friend - just take yourself.

Glossy magazines or some nice toiletries. But as DBVC says just take yourself.
All best wishes to your friend.

How about something feminine or pampering... a little luxury, that kind of thing.... but really I'm sure she'll just be happy that you're there...

Tigger I love the idea of flicking through a trashy magazine together and having a good snigger and a chuckle. I just hope her stitches don't spilt

Barney think your idea is very good and thanks as it reminded me that I might have the very thing in my gifts stash. I got a load of ideal things in the Boots sale that will suit her to a T.

Hi Scotliz, Expat and Splash. I know what all say is true but still I do like to go along with something even so.

I think I will take her in the January issue of W&H so she can see a fair few of you at the Forum Fest last year.

A few years ago a friend and work colleague was diagnosed with breast cancer and had treatment. Went to see her in hospital and took some funny notes from people at work, some magazines and sweets! She is a very strong character and missed work! I filled her in with gossip and let her lead- She missed her makeup! So next time took in makeup. Hope your friend is better soon and continues to improve.

The nicest thing a friend brought me when I was in hospital for months was fresh fruit. The special thing was that my friend had prepared it, all chopped up in a Tupperware container with a little fork and napkin. Meant it could easily be put into ward fridge. Pineapple is good because it has an enzyme that cleans the mouth from all the horrible medication tastes. The fork was stainless steel, purloined from an airline, and a lovely change from plastic give aways.

Just checked my post replys and I saw your helpful one DeepBlue. I remember my friend saying she had a horrid taste in her mouth so I will pop into my local Morrisons before I visit her today as I know they have fresh pineapple in a tub and tupperware so all I need to do now is find a airline fork lol
Sincere thanks to you all and for all the replys I have had here from me Debbie. I'm off to do a bit of shopping and find that fresh pineapple.

Hi DBVC, glad your friend is doing OK.

When my Mum was recovering from her big operation I used to take facial stuff in - cleanser, toner, cotton wool, etc. She said made her feel refreshed.

Update on friend I went to the hospital and I took with me ..... [Re: PatsyW]
      #306750 - 13/01/2009 20:04

Hi there Spalsh, expatK, Barney, scotliz, Tigger, DianeJ, BEl, DeepBlue and PatsyW.

My dear friend looked very bright and considering the situation we both had a laugh and she came across as being very positive. She looked relaxed and said what's done is done and it is for the best.
In having the breast removed completely the idea being, I suppose, it reduces her chances greatly of the cancer coming back

So back to what I took in with me
I took in with me a rather big bag of stuff in the end and thanks to all of you

Trashy as well as luxury magazines and yes we did have a laugh and a joke flicking through them and was an excellent conversation opener:D

I took along the January issue of W&H for her and pointed out to the York Forum Fest photo and but I could only name a few of all you lovely ladies. Issi being one of them towards the back and up the stairs I think.

A bunch of cheerful orange and yellow flowers which sadly the ward didn't allow. I dropped them off at my friends home after and gave them to her OH. He impressed me as he promptly put them into water. If it were my OH he would leave them on the side and forget.

A fancy box of tissues.
Two small bottles of Evian water.
From Morrison Best range a punnet of Clementine's the ones with stem and leafs still on, they tasted wonderful

Last but not least forgetting a Tupperware box full of mixed exotic fruit with fresh pineapple and the airline fork!;)How on earth did that get into my cutlery draw ?

All were well received and only the box of tissues she already had. I hope t visit again tomorrow and before I go on my travels. I plan to send a postcard, visit her soon when she is home and hopefully at the weekend.

Days like this do make one feel blessed to be alive and thankful to be well. Also to have such a good friend who now looks so much better and who is alive and nearly back to her normal self.

DBVC, I was thinking of you earlier and wondered how you got on. tried to PM, but you are full AGAIN

What a lovely and kind friend you are and it must have been so nice for you to see your friend looking bright. Laughter is a great healer and it is wonderful to hear that she is being positive, what a strong lady she must be.

Sounds like you did good and took her some wonderful stuff which will make her stay in hospital a little bit brighter.

Friendship is a wonderful thing and means alot to all when they are going through a tough time. Its a true sign of a good friend when you are there for each other.
So I think you need one of these

Tigger

Thanks Tigger for that. I must say I have been worried for her and have had a few restless nights thinking it over and how she must feel and also that it so easily could have been me in the same situation.

I don't need the wings Tigger as I am only human and doing as I would expect and hope a good friend would do for me in a similar situation.

She is a strong woman and with a disabilited son of 22.
My friend has always been his main carer and was talking of he would cope and of how she worried about it if anything were to happen to her.

So yes it was a big relief to see her bright and positive. Her OH and son noticed this to as soon as she came round from the operation and when she first spoke to them.
