Does anyone else read Anne Tyler ? I just discovered her at the beginning of last year. I have just finished Patchwork Planet and am really enjoying her books. The other 2 I have read are - Ladder of Years and Digging to America.

Hi Ginnie- yes, I love her books and have read quite a few. Loved "A Patchwork Planet" and "Breathing Lessons".
Don't think I've read "Digging to America"...must look out for it.

I love Anne Tyler's writing - my favourite is the Amateur Marriage. You must both try that one.

Hi ,
I've read all of her books and love them. I couldn't pick a favourite as they are all so good.
I used to share them with my sister who died 5 years ago so I love them because of that as well.
She must be due to have a new one out soon. She seems to write a new book every 2 years.

I can’t say that Anne Tyler is one of my favourite authors – I wonder if I am missing something! I have read The Accidental Tourist, The Amateur Marriage and Breathing Lessons. I thought all of these showed the author’s skill for character portrayal and the ability to elicit a strong emotional response in the reader.

Breathing Lessons was the title I enjoyed most. At first I found the key character (Maggie) irritating and after a few pages I had doubts about spending a whole book in her company. However, eventually I began to admire her determination to do what she felt was right – to fix her son’s marriage. I have never forgotten her definition of ‘bickering’ – ‘compiling two views of things’!

When I googled Anne Tyler, I was surprised to see that she has written so many books – 18. Digging for America (2006) is her most recent title. I am afraid her fans have a little while to wait for a new title. Noah’s Compass (hardback edition) is to be published later in the year in September.

Love her books. Breathing Lessons was great but I was a little disappointed with Digging For America.

I have read all her books now, the last one I have just finished 'Digging to America' and I have to say I was disappointed. It just seemed to have so little substance and became rather boring, I persevered hoping it would get better but no.

I've now got a list of ones to look out for. Plenty to go at as I've only read three. We sometimes get them in the charity shop where I volunteer. Thankyou for the suggestions

I agree with Dryad - I read The Amateur Marriage and was disappointed - I felt it dwindled off to the end.

I loved Amateur Marriage - it was Digging to America that disappointed me a bit. It was still worth reading though - it is her wonderful understanding of relationships that gets me hooked. I think An Amateur Marriage struck a chord with me on how the wrong people can marry each other and the effect it can have on their lives.

Isn't it always interesting how we differ in opinion about books. In the book club I often notice how a book that disappoints one person is enjoyed by another. It so good that we can relate in different ways to books. I'msure we'll always be readers.

I love Anne Tyler - I've been a fan for years and she's now my "comfort author". I've read all her novels and some of them I've read twice. In fact I'm currently re-reading 'The Accidental Tourist'. I'm particularly fond of 'Back When We Were Grown-ups'.

I don't know what it is about her writing, but I find I've sunk straight into her novels when reading the very first paragraph. Her characters are so ordinary, so human and so fascinating.

Couldn't agree more Judy1951. I have re-read her books again and again. Mind you I think the fact that I have the memory of a gnat helps - half the time I don't really remember the details of a book I have read before. I would hate to have a photographic memory as it would mean I would miss out on the pleasure of re-reading books.

The Amateur Marriage though is the one I enjoyed best.
