Shock..horror I can hear you say..how can Blossom , the Moving More Motivator have taken such a drastic step?!!
Well, I went to the gym today to see what new classes they had.I didn't have time to actually join in anything today, I might add, I just wanted the timetable. It then struck me that I hardly ever go and everytime I pass the gym on the way somewhere else I feel pangs of guilt for not going.Even when I did go, I couldn't wait to ge out of there!
I worked out that by the time I had shaved my legs etc, got sports bag packed, got changed, then changed back and hair dry afterwards...I could have proabably done about 40 minutes extra exercise (eg walking)..for free!!
I then went to the local council run leisure centre and local village hall and picked up their leaflets ..there is so much on offer ; table tennis (get family involved), pilates, yoga, tai chi. kickboxing...all for under a fiver per session...without the guilt that you are paying for it!!!!
I think I am probably the only person in the country who has actually CANCELLED their membership in January!!LOL

A friend of mine goes to keep fit on a tuesday and thursday. She says the woman is fab and it's only £2.00, i think it's Speke/Allerton way. I can ask her where it is if that would be of any interest to you. Apparently you get worked

I'm thinking of doing the same, Blossom, as I realised the last Pilates class must have cost me at least £100 (in unused fees). There must be a cheaper way of keeping fit.
I'm also wondering if I cancel my membership, they will be begging me to come back in a few months with a cheaper deal.

When I told the woman I wanted to cancel it she seemed surprised and asked me if I wanted to put the membership on hold for £5 per month.I was nearly tempted and then I thought NO they will still "have a hold " over me (LOL) and it will always be in the back of my mind that I could go back.
With the credit crunch etc I think many gyms will be offering really good deals by this time next year, so if i really do miss it (I WONT) I could probaly go back then!

Blossom I cancelled my gym membership a couple of years ago. I realised each swim I had taken in a year had cost me £80! I enjoyed going on the machines, but I then used to sit in the cafe and have a coffee and a double chip choc cookie, kinda defeated the object.

I cancelled our joint membership in December.Great place ,great staff and great value, loved the place BUT ,I hardly ever used it.And it made me feel guilty and, weirdly ,seemed to stop me doing other things. I feel relief now that it's cancelled and OH and I have walked more and got more exercise this week than any other week in our time together. I've also bought some exercise DVDs from Ebay to vary the routine.None of them cost more than £4 including postage.I can resell or give them to Charity Shops if I don't use them so nothing will be wasted. Looking forward to joining Blossom's weekly/daily post next week.Hoping Forum support will keep me moving in 2009. Decx

Dec..you are right, being a memeber of a gym that I hardly went to mde me feel guilty, but yes, it stopped me from spending money on other things that I would have liked to do ,but that weren't offered at the gym (eg dancing, ice skating)
I am hoping the support of the forum will keep me moving more too.

Some time ago I read an article about fitness and the person being interviewed was an old man. He said that today's obsessions with gyms was ridiculous because exercise is one of the things we can do absolutely free. As an ex-gym member, twice over, I have decided that he is right, but the best thing about not belonging to a gym any more is that I have stopped thinking about having to go all the time.
