Hello All,
Today in Ireland is known as Nollaig na mBhan or Womens Christmas,(traditionally a day for women to celebrate with other women friends and female family members) so I would like to wish you all Happy Womens Christmas and best wishes for 2009.

Thank you, that's a new one on me but I think we should encourage it over here...although as OH has gone back to work and the schools have re-opened it feels a bit like Christmas!!!!!

Bars and restaurants will be full of groups of women tonight so that women can have the night off so while the men don't actually cook maybe they might pick up the tab. One Dublin restaurant was featured on radio this morning advertising their womens special, the presenter reckons its the place to go to tonight for fellas to "pull".

Yes OzzieKez thats the idea behind it,as its twelfthnight and all the hard work over Christmas is finished it's now time for the women to relax. Decorations don't come down in our house until after Jan 6th so taking them down tomorrow.

Nollag na mon it's actually pronounced fairly much as you see it. Nollaig is Irish for Christmas and also Irish for the month of December and mna is Irish for woman it adopts an M or H in front in certain circumstances, eg plural.

Is that Gaellic? I'm fascinated by those languages and traditions. I have to go to bed now because it's getting late but it would be great to hear more about it. Lots of the books I read have (thankfully) pronunciations of words, names and places in the front. It amazes me how departed it seems from the English we speak today. Anyway Happy Nollaig na mBhan.
