Mutual Admiration Society.
      #297925 - 05/01/2009 22:16

Leading on from Wispa's Thread about Bush giving Blair a medal.

What do you think about mutual admiration, when for no apparent reason a person gives you a gift or a compliment and you feel obliged to give them one back, or maybe you don't feel obliged to, but you just do anyway.

I find it all a bit over the top and rather uncomfortable, I like to give a compliment where a compliments due, and rarely give presents to friends. I don't generally say things for the sake of saying them.

I agree with you Snowy, I feel really uncomfortable with all that over the top stuff.I cringe when I hear someone saying something which is obviously just "for the sake of it"!x

Actually Snowy I laughed when I read your post as just before Christmas someone at work gave me an unexpected present. I went down to the shops and bought them a Christmas present, so I suppose I did feel a little obliged. I think it was also because I have always been brought up not to be 'beholden' to others.

I do pay compliments when they are due and if someone seems a bit down I will try to cheer them up. When we have a bad week at work I will bring in fruit or a cake to share. If someone pays me a compliment I just smile and thank them.

I know Ozzie I first thought, Whose she calling a dog?LOL

Then I remembered that my little dog in the picture from 'Herge's Adventures of Tintin" is called Snowy, so I'm letting her off!

You better be quick my Ozzie friend as I'm just about to shut down and go to bed. I've even missed Celebrity Big Brother tonight, all because of the forum.

Hi Snowy, I like to praise where praise is due. I think it's nice to tell someone they've done well or that they look nice, it can make someones day, especially if they don't often get compliments or praise. This works especially well with children, and it's proven that kids respond better and excel when praised and not constantly criticised.

The world is generally such a grim and miserable place, you only have to watch the news to see that, so why not brightens someones day by saying something nice? It could make their day, or even thier week!

I'm probably a better compliment giver than receiver - aren't we all? However, I rarely received compliments as a child (which probably speaks volumes!) and therefore find them quite hard to give. My compliments are infrequent, always genuine but never given in the expectation that they will be reciprocated. I would rather receive one heartfelt compliment than 50 given without thought.
I'm not a great present giver either but, as Foxie says, it's difficult not to reciprocate.

I agree with Sweetpea and if you spent your time at school being teased for your looks that also has an effect on whether you secretly believe people when they compliment you.
