Finally plucked up courage to have implant in front tooth. Not pleasant getting it done, but even scarier writing out the cheque!
Went back for check-up only to be told that it hasn't 'taken' and needs to be re-done. Gutted.
Dentist reassured me that it just means a minor setback of a month or two, but this is a front tooth, and 2 months in, I'm already fed up of using my back teeth for everything (no sandwiches, pizza for me!). Am also really worried that I'll go through the next 6 months (sucking soup through a straw!) only to be told that it's not successful.
Part of me just wants to quit and get that bridging done instead, but I know that's just me being cowardly!
Anyone had a front tooth implant? Been through the same experience?

Hi Elsie I am in the process of having an implant too. It is at the side though. I had the implant put in several months ago and touch wood no problems. I am due to go for the tooth fitting next week and would you believe it I think I am starting a cold!!! First one this winter too.
What was the problem with the implant? Before anything was done I had a series of X rays to check the bone density of my jaw to ensure the post would be ok. Very expensive about £2000 in all, but I have paid in stages as the work is done so it wasn't one big payment!
I truly hope all goes well with you. Teeth are such a problem! Foxie

Hiya Foxie, I had an infection which hasn't cleared despite .....otomies? Hopeless at remembering long words!
The bone has softened a bit as a result but the dentist reassured me that I'm still a straight-forward case, so here's hoping....! I think my main problem is - it's a front tooth - even OH giving me a kiss has me backing away!
Would love to say I've given up all things sugary as a result but......!
Glad to hear all's going well with yours. Once it's all over we can look forward to spending our cash on new handbags again!

Hi fairymary and welcome to the forum.
I can honestly say (hand on heart) that having an implant was not painful at all. And this comes from someone who takes plasters off in the bath under water, so I have a low pain threshold.
Elsie - I hope the infection clears up soon. I was given antibiotics to start on before the implant and then for a week afterwards. I also had to rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash and with salt water. The other advice I was given was to 'hold' the mouth wash in my mouth and not 'swish' it around. I was told that the first blood clot which forms is full of healing stuff and it was extremely important not to dislodge it or touch it with my tongue. The other advice was not to eat strawberries as the tiny seeds can get lodged under the stitches and would be extremely painful.
I used to eat about 3 -4 boiled sweets a day but I have gone cold turkey since my dentist explained to me that I was swilling my teeth in a sugar bath several times a day. I hold this picture in my mind and it is a good deterrent. Good luck, I hope everything goes well next time.
Take care Foxie

I would love to be like you girls. Implants !! I practically need a Valium to make an appoinment - on the phone. Waiting desperatly to have my six front teeth removed and a set of false ones. My dentist has recommended me to the hospial. Goodness knows when I will get in. I dont think the dentist was overkeen to make the appointment. He is losing about £1600 after all. Just talking about it makes me feel really queasy. I am sure there aren't any more like me out there.

Oh yes there is Patdock..ME......I go to a specialist dentist, and I am even sedated (put in the twilight zone) for a filling!! It costs me a fortune, but I would rather pay the money for the anetheatist (sp) than have an injection in my mouth whilst awake.....

Poor you Elsie.
Having said that, rather you than me! I'm the same as secret and patdock....a tad bit scared of the dentist!
I hope you don't have to wait another couple of months and are able to get it done sooner
Remember, NO sucky sweets

Oh Perry, what I'd give for a sucky sweet. Even just a bite of an M&S sandwich, hmmm......!
Wish I could say, 'Yes, I am brave' but I'm not. I've been putting off getting this done for over 10 years!
Had to laugh at your warning about strawberries, Foxie - I think a blueberry is to blame for my implant moving. Was a good girl, chewing with my side teeth but a rogue seedy-bit strayed and I bit on it by mistake. Boy, did it hurt!
Am thinking maybe sucky sweets are a safer option than fruit now!
Thanks for all your thoughts/advice girls. 2nd implant attempt on 26th Jan, eeek!
Took me 5 attempts to pass my driving test - perhaps I'm destined never to get things right first time!

Hi Elsie Fingers crossed for 26 Jan!
Hi Patdock There is also the option of having sedation at my surgery. The dentist charges you an extra fee for the anesthetist, but if you are truly 'wobbly' at the dentist it would be worth it. If you don't have confidence in your dentist, change dentists there is nothing worse than being scared. Good luck to you.
